Was flying around Hyjal looking for this guy on my hunter, who has done none of the 4.2 quests. Noticed several areas that previously had stuff didn't anymore. So, do I have to quest on my hunter so I can be in Ban'Thalos's phase or does this not matter?

Yes, you need to quest. =)

About the time you open up your Mark of the World Tree dailies then you are in the right phase!
