Are all pets really created equal?

I know that the general concensus is that all pets of the same family have the same DPS but is this really true? The skill trees are a little different, special abilities are different, focus dumps behave differently. Perform DPS testing and some pets definitely tend to deeps higher. So whats the deal with this? IMHO pets are not equal... this goes for tanking ability also. Although the tank test is a little harder to perform I swear my bear is a better tank than my turtle. This I have not really tested tho not like the pet DPS im just going off reckoning... dead reckoning. So WTF sporebat tiem or what?

I think you're going to find it really fades into a lot of subjective muddle - for example my turtles tank way better than anything else I've tried, including bears.
But ofc, YMMV - and that's the point.

BTW I got Anzu my second run after I got keyed. First run got flightform second run Anzu.. w00t! That was back when you could pull Anzu to the entrance and fight him without the bird phase. You could leave the instance eat rest jump back in and finish him.

I think all pets are created equal until they are put in the hands of a hunter. People choose, spec and use their pets differently and this will produce varying results. I use my boar to tank everything from old heroics to current elites(although lately I've been using my cat on Problim/Tank and he does just fine) and he has outperformed every turtle I've tried so far - but I think a lot of that is not because of pet skill but personal attachment to the pet itself. I'll always feel as if my Torque is a better tank than someone else's Terrorpene. ;P

*nods to Nub* Exactly! The hunter's playstyle varies things. When doing Slabhide runs, I often bring my bear instead of my turtle, simply because I end up preferring the constant 10% reduction in melee damage from him than having the extra shield wall cooldown. But that's me. Another hunter might prefer the other way. Neither way is wrong or better.

Tank pets, i always perfer to go with Bear but when im doing my daily Skadi runs i go with my turtle Terrorpene because the mobs hurt really bad if you let them pile up.. (but thats cause im too squishy to make a huge different in culling their numbers, so i just go slowly through them now), and actually currently i find myself using a Spirit Beast more often for elites then my warp stalker (i just cannot seem to click with bears or turtles whatsoever... im hoping i'll click with a beetle at the very least), especially in Vashj'ir since its very easy to aggro several mobs at once, i dun need thunderstomp aggroing some neutral mobs too xP

I'm going to third this. It depends a lot on the hunter's skill, I think!

once you factor in talent trees, family skills, special abilities, hunter's spec and stats, etc, they are a bit different.
