So, lets share thoughts of what pet will be combined with which race representitive(?) pet.
I think:

Alliance
Human - Either a gray boar or a grey wolve (From their starting area's)
Dwarf - Most likely a bear, Dwarves and Bears are just so.. ment to be.
Night Elf - Either the striped cat from Teldrassil, or a brown teddy bear (darkshore)
Draenei - Most likely a pet family added in TBC: Moth or Ravager
Worgen - Wolf?

Horde
Orc - I'd say a scorpid(their Argent Ground Tournament race specific pet) or a Worgen type of wolf (their mount).
Tauren - A planestrider (grey) or a coyote (beige/brown) from their starter zones
Troll - I think I'm a 100% sure that they will get a raptor (Red), since its both in their starter zone and their mount.
Undead - Most likely a Bat, or one of the undead pets (wolves,bears) but i dont think blizzard will be that awesome. ;D
Blood elf - No doubt; the Eversong Lynx from their starter zone.
Goblin - Hmm, a tough one. I like to believe goblins are somehow related to turtles (they distribute turtle mounts, the quest for the wandering turtle quest mob in tanaris, etc) but I could be totally off here.

Orcs may get boars even,
Tauren will probably have striders, but wolves would work too
Forsaken probably bats
Trolls probably raptors but maybe even a tiger
Belf I'm betting dragonhawks over a lynx
Goblins will get gnome-on-a-leash

Humans will probably score wolves
Nelf will be a saber
Dwarves will get bears
Draeni probably get moths
Worgen may get a gilnean mastiff

Human - wolf or eagle. as portraied on the big statues at SW bridge.
NE - Sabre or owl.
Dwarf - Bear. maybe boar.
Draenei - Id say moth, though ravager is also very likely.
Worgen - i dunno yet. i want to give em a wolverineish pet, but there curently is none

Orc - scorpin
Troll - Raptor
Undead - bat, undead wolves or spider
Tauren - hmm...ill give em the Tallstriders.
BE - Dragonhawk or red kitty.
Goblin - Crab, turtle or maybe something new we havent seen yet.

I think slic123 has a good idea, looking at the race-associated mounts and mini-pets. Let's see ..

Orc: Wolf, snake, scorpion --> I'm going with scorpion (largely because I'm pegging wolves for humans).
Undead: Skeletal horse, roach, bat --> Bat. They are pretty ubiquitous in Tirisfal.
Tauren: Kodo, prairie dog, tallstrider --> Tallstrider. There are plenty in Mulgore.
Troll: Raptor, fetish --> A raptor really seems to fit. A nice red one, preferably.
Blood Elf: Hawkstrider, dragonhawk, broom --> I'll say dragonhawk. again, ubiquitous.

Human: Horse, cat, lamb --> No help here! Well, sure, a cat, but I just don't see it. So I'll go with you guys and say wolf.
Dwarf: Ram, rabbit, bear cub --> Bear. Definitely bear.
Night Elf: Saber cat, owl, plant --> Hmmm. Cats are easy, but owls ... No, I'll say cat.
Draenei: Elekk, moth, plant --> Ooh, moth!

This is a wicked thread.

My *guess* is that all of the starter pets will essentially be "loaner" pets, so they'll be from the starting areas.

My guesses:

Alliance: Tenacity
Draenei - either brown bear or golden crab
Dwarf - black bear
Human - gray boar
Night Elf - yellow boar or brown bear
Worgen - either something new from their zone or gray bear

Alliance: Ferocity
Draenei - white or blue moth
Dwarf - either snow leopard or white wolf
Human - gray wolf (not a diseased one)
Night Elf - black and white striped or spotted cat
Worgen - either something new from their zone or mountain lion cat

Alliance: Cunning
Draenei - orange ravager
Dwarf - brown spider
Human - orange spider
Night Elf - gray owl
Worgen - either something new from their zone or green spider

Horde: Tenacity
Blood Elf - either golden or white crab or sea turtle
Goblin - something new from their zone, probably sea turtle or red or blue crab
Orc - either black boar or brown or yellow scorpid
Tauren - yellow boar
Troll - either river crocolisk or white crab
Undead - some color diseased bear

My orc/troll guesses can go either way, since they're the only two hunter races to share a starting zone, so it was a bit of a crap shoot.

When I originally started this list, I was thinking that Blizzard would standardize the pets and give everyone a tenacity pet or a ferocity pet, but then I realized that cunning pets were included in the taming quests, so it really could be anything, especially since said pet would need to be re-tamed at level 10 anyway.

They're a sea creature. The goblins hail from a tropical island. That's about it.

I'd prefer seeing them with the turtle, personally.

Human: Boar... They are EVERYWHERE in Elwynn... or a Spider... again: EVERYWHERE
Dwarf: Bear, no doubt... (Could be Boar, but I like to think that Blizz wouldn't give the same species twice)
NElf: Cat, or Owl, or maybe even a Spider. (Really depends on whether BElfs get Lynx or Dragonhawk, due to above reason)
Draeni: Moth, or Ravager
Worgen: Wolf, or some new Gilnean beast

Horde
Orc: Scorpid, almost no doubt
Goblin: Turtle, or even maybe a nice green Windserpent, native to their home Island
Troll: Raptor... raptor... raptor... Yes definitely

Fun thread!!! Hmm, let's see here (digs back into dark recesses of brain, trying to remember the starting areas.....):

Alliance:
- Humans: gray wolf
- Dwarves: this is a tough one since there aren't any bears in Coldridge Valley, but I'll go with a black bear
- Night Elves: striped nightsaber
- Draenei: blue moths (I just don't see them starting with a ravager for some reason)
- Worgen: hard to say until we see their starting zone, but I'm willing to bet it will be a new beast like the Gilnean Mastiff someone mentioned earlier

Horde:
- Orcs: I'm going with the cute little gray boar for this one
- Trolls: either red raptor or tiger, but it could depend on what's in the Echo Isles (correct me if I messed up the name)
- Tauren: brown tallstrider seems a popular choice, and I think I agree
- Blood Elves: dragonhawks or mana wyrms, if those somehow become tameable
- Undead: brown bat or dark widow spider, but bats seem like the obvious choice (because of their flight paths and mini-pet)
- Goblins: hmm...I think they're going to get a gorilla or other type of ape/monkey, I'm not sure why but that would seem appropriate to me

(Edit: almost forgot the blood elves!)

Kalliope, are you thinking that newbie hunters will get a pet in each tree? Hmm ... I hadn't thought about that.

Of course, since pets below level 20 have no talent points, it may be somewhat immaterial.

Hmm, if hunters have the possiblity to switch between 3 pets, why not from the beginning? Who knows. I really like the changes they've made to hunter leveling and pets. Makes me want to have even moar hunters!

Nah, I think newbie hunters will only get one pet; I just wanted to cover the possibilities from each tree, in case Blizz says "everyone gets a pet from <x> tree" instead of mixing and matching based on what suits the hunter/race.

It would be a cool learning experience for baby hunters, but as you pointed out, with no talent points, there's no real advantage to teaching baby hunters about the different trees and types of pets.

I wonder if the lvl 1 pet assignment will be automatic, or you’ll have to go out and tame something, hopefully they won’t drop the lvl 10 Hunter quests, I love those quests! I’m thinking that to preserve the thrill of the lvl 10 pet acquisition, your lvl 1 pet should just have a generic name “Wolf” “Cat” etc. and just have very basic attacks. Sort of like the loaner pets you get when you do the Hunter quest line.

My guess at the lvl 1 pets, taking in to consideration what is already in game:

Human – Diseased Young Wolf (are there even any other Beasts in the Human starting area?)
Dwarf – Ragged Young Wolf (but should be Bear or Cat ie. Snow Leopard “Cub” IMO, or even a “Young” Small Crag Boar)
Night Elf – Young Nightsaber or Young Thistle Boar
Draenei – Vale Moth
Worgen – I’m hoping for Fox

Orc – Mottled Boar
Undead – Duskbat, Young Scavenger or Spiders if they lowered the lvl of a couple of the Young Night Webs.
Tauren – Plainstrider (or a cougar type Cat if they lowered the lvl of a couple)
Troll – Mottled Boar (but could be a Scorp if they lower the lvl of a couple of the Workers)
Blood Elf – Sprngpaw Linx (I’d make twenty BE if they gave them Mana Worms!)
Goblin – Crab or Croc (I feel that from the few shots of the Goblin area I’ve seen, the Beasts around them will be aquatic types)

Maybe it’ll be a spell, at least I hope it’s a spell, it’s hard enough managing bag space at low lvl’s without adding some trinket like “Pet Leash/Harness/Collar” – Allows the Hunter to control [Beast Name]… Actually I kinda like that idea, makes it seem more substantial, more novel. And I’m all about the novelty! I can’t wait! I’ll probably roll a new hunter of each race just to try out all the lowbie stuff!

Sorry for the wall of text, just one more gush… now I can get all the pets I want without sacrificing old friends for new!

Oh, I would do the happy dance if they made a wolverine/badger type creature and it was tameable. I want this more than any other new pet. Especially if it's a badger. Please let this be so!

I want a giant rodent pet, be it rat or capybara (or however you spell it), whatever. I just want a big bouncy rodent with me!

Maybe an oversized degu.

I'd like a proper lizard, but I suspect the shape would cause some animation difficulties.

I want a real snake pet.
