Who had the tame right of way?

I wanted to ask this to everyone.
Who has the "right of way tame" in this situation? I have been trying to help my friend find and tame Deth' I go everyday and check to see if she is here waiting, well she WAS there the other night. I yelled at my RL friend to come here now and got my husband (a druid we use for root so not death strike while taming) to come. There was NO other hunters, only one DK and he was just passing threw (on the spider side of the wall not on Deth's dont even think they knew it was there) so I was there for 5 mins when two alliance showed up, they ran right past me I did a /shoo cause I cant talk to them but they ignored me and begain attacking her right as my friend and husband got there (along with two others just cause they had never seen her) Well two of our party attacked them saying since I was there first it was our tame. I was there first and had been for awhile but the hunter who was to do the tame showed up as the allie did, does me standing watch over the spider count? They didnt get it, my friend did but someone eles told us we should have let them have it since she wasnt there when I was. I dont want to start a whole fight but this person really has thier nose out of joint and said we took thier tame (I think they are allie and horde on our server and might have know one of them)

Technically...I'd have to side with them. You weren't there to tame it. Your friend was. The Alliance were ready to go, ready to tame. Your team wasn't. It's just as bad as the DK that killed my friends Deth because he was 'reserving it' for his guildie.
It's nice you wanted to help your friend and all but, Deth is not yours unless you or your party are ALL there and ready to go. If your friend wants him, she needs to park her hunter there so when he's up, shes ready to go.

I personally take the "move it or lose it" approach, e.g. you get to it first, you get first crack at it (as long as you take your shot and don't just sit there for 5 minutes loading up on short buffs, looking it up on wowhead, discussing taming tactics with guild and so forth -.-).
If you succeed, then grats to you and enjoy your new tame. If you die, run away or otherwise reset the aggro, then it's the next person's turn. Otherwise if you want the spawn for someone else, then you're just a bystander and all you can do is hope your friend gets there before anyone else does.
Now where you were there first but (as far as the other group could see) were just sitting there not taming or attacking it, that would fall into the "lose it" category; if they were feeling super nice they could ofc still choose to stop and try to puzzle out your intentions with cross faction /emotes and such, but that's not an obligation.
EDIT: And trying to get a sympathetic response with /shoo is likely to get the opposite result... /wait, /beg, etc would be more effective...

^ This, pretty much. Be ready or move it.

As much as it sucks no matter how you slice it, I'd have to agree with the folks above. I'm admittedly a bit curious as to why
you're the one always checking on Deth when it is your friend that wants it. If I was her, I'd have my hunter's butt parked in that area all the time. That's what I did with Rhyela in Uldum, trying to get Madexx.
Unfortunately, I would say the other folks were right in going in for the tame after you /shoo'd them (again, I agree with what someone said above that using emotes such as /wait, /beg, /plead, etc. can have a much better effect on people than shooing them away, lol). How long could anyone expect those folks to wait? What if it took your friend another 15 or 30 minutes to log on? They were ready to go, so all's fair in love and war. At least they weren't there to kill it.

I reserve /shoo for the people that beg for gold in the AH. (although I haven't seen as much of that since 4.0)

I've been in Molten Front for the past couple weeks (my computer stopped working when patch 4.2 dropped and it took 6 weeks to fix, don't ask why) and I've found at least one rare most nights. If someone is already there and wants to tame, I'll help them with it. If no one's there (and this is what it usually is), I ask other hunters in Molten Front and if no one's there, Mount Hyjal, and so on. Then, I help the hunter tame. I've had some occasional arguments with other hunters over right of way, though. For example, yesterday I had found Kirix and was helping another hunter tame. Another hunter comes along later and I tell him that someone else was already trying to tame and had been for about half an hour. He responds "So what it's a game, he'll find him again later", which really pissed me off. If he had said something along the lines that we should all be able to try once the preceding hunter dies, I probably would've taken it much better. But the words he chose made it seem as if he would've stolen the other hunter's tame no matter what, justifying his actions with his previous statement. So the question I pose to my fellow Petopians is: If a hunter has been trying to tame a rare and dies, should other hunters that came upon the rare later be allowed to try to tame or is the rare "reserved" for the hunter who found it first? Does the same thing apply if the first hunter fails but doesn't die?

If the hunter dies, anyone is allowed to take their turn. This is something we learned when we were little kids....taking turns.
If the hunter isn't dead, then the hunter is still taking their turn.

I kind of figured it was thier turn but the other two members (not hunters) are huge pvp people and I think they used the excuse to attack them while we stood there trying to figure out what to do...both of us were ready to just leave it and try again another day but I was unsrue if they'd just kill Deth too just to make sure the allie hunters didnt get her.
And as for me helping her watch for it, I was only another set of eyes like many people have other guild members help them keep an eye out if they are in the area of the rare, she's a friend and I didnt mind.
But next time I will make it very clear that our choise is to leave it and go so I dont have to feel bad for others actions.

I hope you don't feel like we were trying to pick on you.....

You asked so we're just being honest. At least you are kind enough to even ask in the first place. Too many people are selfish and don't care how others feel.

Oh, no no...I feel horribly guilty, its my own guilt I let them do it that has me angry with myself. Not ANY of you guys.

I just know next time to say my thing to them and leave and what they do is what they do and Im not there. They have done it befor (not my hunter friend or my husband) They even dont understand why they should not kill the new rares that dont drop anything. I didnt invite them they heard what was going on and wanted to see Deth' for themselves...thats why I was worried they'd kill her too just cause. Thankfuly they are not in my guild but my friends

Exactly. I've been the eyes and ears of the front a lot. I've found rares many times and sometimes the people I find show up in time, sometimes they dont. I'll never try to /shoo someone if they get there before someone else.

If you aren't ready and another person is, they have every right to get rolling.
If you die on a tame attempt, you are no longer ready (you are dead), and the next hunter has every right to try.

I have to agree with Worba as well, but I also feel that ~90% of hunters that play aren't at all courteous to each other.
I've had pets killed under my nose by other hunters (Who already have the pet I'm taming) etc.
While it's extremely good if a fellow hunter gives another a right of way to tame, I wouldn't expect it of anyone unless you knew them, let alone people on another faction :c
Having said that, I'm sorry your friend missed the tame, and I hope she gets Deth eventually!

I'd say whoever put the most work into getting the pet should get it if multiple people are there waiting, otherwise first come first serve.

Molten Front rares suck (and this is coming from someone who has the ones she wants).
I always felt that the rare should phase out once a hunter tags it (and if they die it would phase back in). That would solve all of these unfortunate "did I do the right thing" queries ;_;

its more of an etiquette than a rule, you should b/c its the right thing to do, not some rule you have to/are obligated to follow. usually here on petopia, its first come first server, you get 1st tame, if you fail, next person gets a chance to tame.
generally on pvp servers, red is dead, this applies to both side, doesn't matter if you're out farming, questing or taming a pet. i was on a pvp server between vanilla and wotlk. i really enjoy/appreciate being on a pve server now, as do my alts, can quest peacefully w/o getting ganked and camped all the time.

Yeah, that's true. The matter of etiquette is a good deal more meaningful on a PVE server; otherwise it's like leaving your money on the front lawn and hoping no one takes it...
