I'd probably actually pay money for it, too.

Very nice stable, and I agree... I never used to need the space myself, but it's come to the point where I would rather extra space than having to abandon pets I'm uncertain about and want to give another chance. And at the end of the day, extra space won't hurt!
Personally I like the idea of 25 free slots, and at level 85 hunters can pay to increase their stable space. I'd be happy to pay a couple of hundred gold a slot, even! Or even an increasing slot space - 100g, 200g, 300g, 400g, 500g (with 500 as the cap) - that way there's a round-about limit without actually having a "limit" because I don't think many people would want to spend huuuuge amounts lol.

Yesssss! I have talked to some GMs about this and also posted on the main forums- I know many hunters wouldn't mind paying some gold for a "gold sink" just to have those extra slots. *drool*

If they were to do it, I doubt they'd do it by giving hunters a gold sink. That's how we used to be, with needing arrows, and food for our pets, and so on. This topic comes up every month or so now it seems though, so I'll leave it at that and if someone wants to see all the sides/ideas, there's always the search function, heh.

Not in favor. If disk space truly was not an issue, then I'd have no opinion on it, but it very much is - key rings were removed to make space for void storage... which is being added to hold the gear sets players will be hoarding for transmogrification - we now have 5x the stable slots we made do with for many years prior to cata, space is a concern for Blizzard, and we as a class are already consuming far more of it than any other.
EDIT: although if they did something where they charged RL money for additional stable slots, i.e. buy it through the blizzard store like with pegasus mount et al, *that* might make it feasible for Blizzard to buy / maintain the additional servers that would be needed - without requiring non-hunters (or hunters who stay within the 25 slot limit) to share the burden. @OP - sorry if that was what you were suggesting in the first place.

You know, providing that the fee was reasonable, I wouldn't mind the option to buy it for real money either. Because let's face it: we already have 25 slots, free of charge, people don't "need" extra space, and there's a perfectly logical reason behind charging (assuming that they do need the disc space)... I'm highly against charging additional money for features in the game, but-
Wait, what am I kidding, it's Blizzard. One of the richest empires in the world. They can afford a little more disc space, we already pay $15 a month.

Taking the keyring out was retarded, we still end up acquiring temp keys like coffer keys in BRD and the harpoon gun key from howling fjord for example that used to go in the keyrings but now sit in our bags.
Now about stables, i do agree, we have 25 slots for free, let us have more but have to buy them, not with real money though, thats just greedy and uneccesary. If they were to charge us money for stable slots, when no class in the entire game needs to pay real money so they can be their class, regardless of if its just apperence or an actual essential part of their gameplay, then they might as well just start making armor that can be bought with money and kill the game flat out in a few months time. Make us pay gold for 10 more slots and then everyone can be happy.

In re: keyrings, was it easier to store / use keys when they were stored in the keyring? Yes, bearing in mind Blizzard has also stated that they plan on discontinuing keys as bag-space-consuming items, so we're really just talking about stuff from lvls 58-80 (this factors in the fact that most of Azeroth was rebuilt same time cata was released), e.g. a fair chunk of content, but not a huge deal, and when weighed against the gains to be had from using the disk space for void storage, there's really no contest.
As for what Blizzard can/cannot afford, I think the only ones who could accurately answer that to any degree would be Blizzard themself as they are the only ones who truly know what kind of actual profit margin they are making (and yes that includes making a lot of people filthy rich, but it is a capitalist enterprise after all) and what is needed for operating costs, R&D of Titan and so on and so on. The rest of us can only speculate.
Same thing re: "coinage" for a pay-to-store stable upgrade; could it work with in-game gold instead of RL cash? Possibly - again you'd have to work for Blizzard to know what kind of actual disk space surplus they have available - and if they weren't doing void storage my gut sense would be that they could probably finagle something but it would be a gamble, e.g. making it a gold sink would means they have to gamble a lot on things like average player wealth, average hunter pet volume etc etc and once they make a decision they are stuck with it even if tons more hunters "opt in" with in-game funny-money than was expected. But with void storage already about to happen, I'd suspect they're too thin on the ground for that.
In re: needing more than 25 stable slots for a hunter to be able to "play its class"... just... no. We did it fine with 5 for many years - 25 is an awesome luxury that has nothing to do with class viability (at least from a combat standpoint anyway - even if you go with 3 from each family (tenacity / ferocity / cunning), each with its own different spec, that's still only 9...)

I really doubt that disk space caused by keys or offline pets is really the issue. Disks are just about the cheapest part of servers nowdays, though fast access disks are more expensive. Data storage for each key would be only a few bytes - slot 1, itemID, slot2, itemID etc. Pet data could be more, especially if they store talent info for each, but as a minimum it could be slot1, petname, npcID. All the rest could be loaded when the pet is moved out of the stables.
As for making it a goldsink to expand beyond 25, yeah I'd do it. I'm the fool who bought stable slots - for my rogue back in vanilla where for a time that was possible.

Aside from Blizzard already saying it caused a space issue, even the smallest memory usage adds up for an 11-13 million playerbase.

Watch they free up stable slots to unlimited to test it out, 2 "gotta catch em all" hunters crash a server

Personally I wish they had fixed up something for hunters to be able to use void storage to in a sense, save their pets NPC ID #, and we'd just pay gold to take it in and out of the storage, while leaving us our 25 pet slots.

That would consume less space - but remember void storage holds only the most generic info, so a "void stable" would require that they lose their name... and (probably) also any "special tame" effects as well (you may have already thought of this yourself - just sayin).
Of everything I've heard so far though - outside of RL cash for extra slots - I suspect the void stable approach would be the most likely to at least get considered by Blizzard.
Another twist on your theme - let hunters choose to trade (some) void vault slots for void stable slots! That would actually cost no extra memory whatsoever.

That would be even better really. Hell, even if it did cost gold to do that it'd still be a better option. =P

I just added it (swapping void slots for void stable slots) to the suggestions thread.
Giving credit to you for the original idea ofc.
