By a Stroke of Ban'thalos... and Others (Updated 10/21/2011)

I originally posted this first part in a jorunal entry I made on my DeviantArt page, but I figured that the Hunter community would get more of a kick out of it all if I shared it here as well.

I'll be assuming that you know what WoW is and what Hunters are (if you don't, why are you here?). That said, I apologize if anything I explain in this post is something you already know. When I posted this on DA, I wanted to make sure that even non-WoW readers would get the general idea of what I was saying. So without further ado, lets begin!

Oh, and before you ask, yes, I dual-box Hunters. I don't want to hear anyone bashing me because I dual-box. It's not against Blizzard's Terms of Use, and if you're angry because you feel like you should be able to take down two Hunters all by yourself with no trouble, I'm sorry, but you deserve to be killed, so sue me. XD
DA post made on Sept 30, 2011 titled 'By a Stroke of Ban'thalos' wrote:At the time, I already had Ankha, a spectral tiger model Spirit Beast, on one of my Hunters and King Krush, a rare spawn Devilsaur, on the other, a good combo when trying to take down healers in PvP. Because of this, I had no real intention on camping any other rare spawn, including any other Spirit Beasts.

So I went off to do my Mount Hyjal dailies on my two Hunters together. I spend the next 20-ish minutes completing said quests, then I head back to turn them all in. As I'm approaching, I notice movement high in the air above where the quest givers are. My heart pace doubles. It's Ban'thalos, the first and only owl modeled Spirit Beast in the game, currently.

Ban'thalos has a 6-17 hour spawn timer and is one of the ten "taming challanges" which Blizzard incorperated for Hunters in patch 4.2. Ban'thalos' particular complication which makes him difficult to tame is that he flies far too high for any Hunter to tame from the ground. In addition, it MUST be frozen, or its special ability will channel you to your death. Most Hunters perch themselves upon the tiny tip of a nearby tree to be in range for the tame and have a Freezing Trap satify their freezing needs.

However, I didn't have the luxury to position myself perfectly on the tip of any tree and be fast enough to tame him before some gutsy Paladin bubbles and kills Ban'thalos. Luckily, I had an alternative method, credits to dual boxing Hunters. All while my heart was beating and my hands shaking, I flew Hunter 1 just high enough to get a ranged shot off to bring it in range of my other Hunter to shoot once at (so it doesn't evade-reset), later sacrificed when it started Harsh Moonlighting the shiz out of it. That's when Hunter numero 2, the one I wanted to take the bird with, laid a Freezing Trap, froze it, and tamed. Bam! Ban'thalos is mine!

Now obviously, stories like that are heard by super lucky Hunters that happen to stumble across a rare spawn like that, especially when it's a Spirit Beast. Now comes the next detail of the story.

One day later, I'm again doing my Hyjal dailies, finished them, and was en route to turn them again again. As I was flying back, I thought to myself, "Wouldn't it be freaking halarious if I stumbled across Ban'thalos again?" Obviously, it wouldn't happen, right? So just for mere giggles, as I'm coming back, I fix my eyes on the area where I saw it the previous day... THERE'S MOVEMENT! Oh surely it's just someone on a fancy mount- WHAT?! IT'S FREAKING BAN'THALOS AGAIN! At this point, I'm feeling all sorts of emotions. Humor because I stumbled across a 6-17 hour rare spawn TWO DAYS IN A ROW in the EXACT SAME MANNER. Surprise because I just can't believe what just happened. And happiness because, yes, I managed to TAME it yet again, this time on the Hunter that didn't have it. A couple minutes later as I let it sink in, I type in guild chat my unbelievable luck.

That was all several days ago. NOW we come to yesterday night! Yet AGAIN, I'm doing my dailies. only this time, I've traveling to another location to complete the next quest on my list, which means I have to fly over where the quest givers are. As I'm approaching that area, I recall my insane luck with back-to-back days of sighting Ban'thalos by mere chance. The same thought again runs through my mind. "Wouldn't it absolutely halarious if I saw him a THIRD time?" The quest giver area comes into view. I look up, and yes, it's THERE AGAIN! I'm totally freaking out. THREE TIMES I have random sighted him all within a five-day time span. And THREE TIMES, I have tamed him. Yes, I tamed this one even though I already had one. I plan to use one for PvP content and one for PvE content.

As a whole, I just don't know what to make of this. It still hasn't completely sunk in that I managed to tame THREE of the same freaking Spirit Beasts so close together by mere coincidence...... And my main Hunter ALSO has Ban'thalos as well. If I ever decide to 3-box Hunters (Wesleytiger, Wespuma, and Wespumy), this is probably what it might all look like...

Image
Ainiayo is the female Night Elf Hunter, and the two human Hunters are mine, Wespuma/pumy.
That was the first post. Now comes the post I did just last night, a sort of "sequel" to the previous post...
DA post made on Oct 17, 2011 titled 'By a Stroke of... Deja Vu Much?' wrote:One would think that after the kind of luck I had with the three Ban'thalos tames I had roughly three weeks ago, my luck might calm a bit...

NOPE! It's been the opposite. My insane luck has gotten even MORE ridiculous since then. About a week after my wild luck with the spirit owl, Ban'thalos' crush proved itself once again when, under the EXACT circumstances as before, doing dailies in Hyjal, Ban'thalos was flying high in the air in his usual slow circular path he always takes, flapping his wings as though to say, "I'm yours once again. TAKE ME!" ....And I answered that wish AGAIN. Now Wespuma AND Wespumy have TWO of those spectacular owls EACH. What's next, you ask?

Ever since my luck with Ban'thalos began, I've been more attentive of nearby rare pet spawns than ever before. The Molten Front, a fairly small area compared to the rest of the WoW world, is PILED with rare pet spawns. Most of these rare pets are simply spiders with unique skins (there are a few that share skins with common spiders found in the same area).

Skarr is among these unique skins, and unlike his eight-legged friends, Skarr is a cat, not a spider. Though he's not a Spirit Beast like Ban'thalos, he's still a rare pet with a long respawn timer and is still in high demand for his unique skin that all Hunters, BM and non-BM alike, drool with jealousy over. However, aside from the long respawn timer which I sat through the first time I got him on my main Hunter, Wesleytiger, many months ago, he has another catch to his tame. Amidst spamming fireballs at you (yes, this kitty spits fire), he has a 5-second casting ability which come close to, if not one-shot you AND interrupt your tame. This ability MUST be interrupted. For this reason, Marksmanship spec is required, as it has the only interrupt ability available to Hunters; Silencing Shot. Aside from the "must interrupt" ability, it's an easy tame. This gorgeous feline looks like this: http://wow.zamimg.com/uploads/screensho ... 239307.jpg

Now, you probably see where this is going, so I'll just skip to the inevitable moment of great fortune. Four days after my fourth Ban'thalos tame... Upon completing my dailies in the Molten Front, I use my Eagle Eye ability (lets you view a chosen spot from FAR away) to spy on one of Skarr's spawn points before I would leave the area. I look around for a moment, and it's not long before I spot the pair of familiar glowing red eyes of the rare kitty as it sit proudly atop one of the many floating rocks in his area, as though daring any passing Hunter to take a shot at taming him.

My pulse doubles. I know good and well that I might not make it to him in time, as I have to take a somewhat long route on ground to reach him, and that very same route it also dangerous. One miss-step will send me either falling to my death, or burn me to death. Yet even if I DID survive the obstacle course, chances are a nearby Hunter would've already nabbed him. Never-the-less, being the Hunter with crazy luck in the past, I decide to test my odds yet again and mount up to begin my run with Wespuma and Wespumy (my dual-boxing Hunters). I soon reach a fire-infested field, the first obstacle in my path to Skarr.

Normally, if I did the dailies for a the Druids of the Talon, there would be a clear path straight to where I need to go. However, I wasn't THAT lucky, as I completed the dailies for a different group. Therefore, I had to carefully hug the side of the field. On one side of me would be fire. Too close to that and I'll burn to death. To the other side is a sheer drop into an endless abyss which explains itself.

So without wasting a heartbeat and still shaking madly, I carefully hug the edge. I navigate Wespumy through just fine, but unfortunately, Wespuma falls off and dies. No worries, though! I only need one toon for this tame! So I proceed onwards, turn the corner and... BAM! There's an angry green spider on me. I was so focused on reaching Skarr, I didn't pay attention to Kirix's dot on my mini-map!

Kirix is among the rare-spawn spiders that can pop up. Unlike much of his rare, eight-legged brethren, he shares a skin with tiny versions of himself found on the other side of the Molten Front. That's not to say that he's an easy tame should you want to go all hardcore for it. If he catches you in melee range, you're as good as dead in a matter of a few seconds from his AoE pulse.

Talk about bad timing. NORMALLY, running across yet ANOTHER rare spawn is quite nice, BUT I'M AFTER SKARR, not this stupid arachnid! Luckily, I manage to Feign Death (fakes death, if you couldn't tell by the name) before Kirix can make a quick lunch from me. As it moves away, I quickly mount up and proceed to Skarr's spot, hoping that I'm not too late. The floating rock I last spied him on finally comes into view, the metallic body of the valuable feline still there, his red eyes staring off pointlessly into the distance. I dismount, dismiss my current pet, switch specs, and begin the tame. Skarr immediately goes for the 5-second cast, so I drop my tame and fire off a Silencing Shot before restarting my tame and taking Fireballs to the face. 10... 9... 8... I got this... 7... 6... He'll soon be mine... 5... 4... Suddenly, there's this huge spider with it's AoE pulse demolishing me! I have no choice but to abandon my tame and Feign Death. The rest of the tame would simply take too long and I would die. DAMN THAT KIRIX!

So in frustration, I wait for the spider to go away again, then eat some quick food to regain health, but I only get what I need to survive through Skarr's Fireballs before turning my attention to Skarr. I had to hurry before Kirix returns! I begin the tame, and Skarr begin his 5-second cast again. I Silence Shot it and restart my tame. 10... 9... 8... I got this... 7... 6... Almost there... 5... 4... OH CRAP! KIRIX IS COMING BACK! 3... COME ON COME ON, HURRY UP! 2... 1... TAMED! I quickly run away from the approaching spider and manage to avoid combat with it, my new shiny kitty in tow. He's a beauty, but by god the Blizzard gods sure made me work for it! I'm just glad that there was no one nearby to interfere and steal the tame from me (aside from Kirix, of course)... Anyways, since I didn't have what I needed to tame Kirix, I typed in General Chat that he's up if anyone wants him, then leave the Molten Front to go about some random Battlegrounds with my Hunters.

NOW we get to today in perhaps what was my luckiest single day EVER in WoW... I've taken a break from Multi-boxing for the past week, just enjoying time on my Feral Druid again, Wesleycat. I didn't usually do dailies on this toon, but because I was waiting for my Heroic Cataclysm Dungeon queue to pop, I decided to go and burn some time completing them. I take the portal to Mount Hyjal and fly to where I pick the quests up. In route, I pass over an area which Magria and Ankha, the rare spectral tigresses if you forgot, run around when they're up. Usually, there's a Hunter waiting for one of them to spawn where they pop up first, nabbing them on the spot as soon as they appear.

This time was not one of those times. Amidst the many aggressive enemies down below is Magria, the blue spectral tiger, patrolling along her route! I already had Magria on my main Hunter, and my Wespuma toon already had Ankha, the white spectral tiger, but Wespumy didn't have either!

I don't even hesitate. Screw the dungeon queue! Despite the likelihood that a Hunter will nab her before I can get Wespumy there in time, I close out of the game and load up my dual-boxing setup via Keyclone. I log into my Druid on my main account, and Wespumy on my other account, throw a party invite to Wespumy on my Druid, use the "Have Group, Will Travel" guild perk to summon Wespumy to where my Druid is (so I don't have to fly it there), then mount up and begin my quest in trying to relocate her in the event that she wasn't already claimed by another Hunter. I quickly find her, strip naked on Wespumy (so Magria's damage buff which destroys you if you have any armor equipped doesn't bite me), then find a safe hill to use while I attempt to tame Magria. I begin the tame and everything is going fin... until my "safe hill" turning into a blazing nightmare when a nearby enemy fire elemental starts attacking me as well! Magria's damage might be mitigated without my armor, but this new enemy mod isn't restricted by such a thing, so it's tearing me apart in the meantime WHILE I'm taming Magria! Luckily, it isn't near a menacing as Kirix, so I manage to complete the tame and survive with 10% health while my new buddy goes crazy on the fire elemental, getting its attention away from me and killing it.

So with the unexpected tame of Magria, I then close out of my dual-boxing setup and go back into my single account setup to return to my Druid activities.

I'm not done, yet. Remember the spirit owl that has a crush on me? Yeah, apparently his crush is still there, because as I approach where I get my dailies, there's that SAME FREAKING BIRD flying high in the air, apparently begging for me to tame him again. Lets see, I already have that owl on EACH of my Hunters, FIVE in total. Because of this, in a first for me I do NOT jump on the idea of taming this gorgeous creature whom insists on stalking me every waking moment. Instead, I do what any courteous player would do; type in general chat that he's up...

I quickly get a reply and I invite him to the party, telling him to boogie his butt over to where I am. Apparently he was already there trying to get him, but because he wasn't camped atop the tree-top for the tame, he had difficulty trying to get him. So, I tell him that I'll bring him down and sacrifice myself so he can get the tame. It's the exact method I used with my dual-boxing Hunters to get their respective Ban'thalos tames. So I fly up, get its attention, fall down, and wait to be Harsh Moonlighted to death so it can turn its attention to the Hunter (I think his name was Fordjs). BAM! Frozen by the Freeze Trap. A successful tame by Fordjs moments later and he's got a new ally! He was so grateful for my help, that he tipped me 400 gold for my help, a mighty generous tip that I wasn't expecting!

So all in all, my amazing luck continues to get amazing-ER. Apparently, I've accumulated so much good luck, fate has decided to burn it all on one month! Maybe I should try the lottery before this good luck vanishes? Nah... That'd be pushing my luck too far.... wouldn't it?

PS - I would like to congratulate Fordjs on his new spirit owl (ever though he'll never see this, probably)!
So there you have it... My amazing random luck has continued thus far, and Ban'thalos' crush on me seems to be never-ending... I still haven't come up with names for the 4 newest spirit owls I have altogether on Wespuma/pumy.

So what can I expect next? Will I randomly encounter Loque AND King Krush when I decide to un-lazy myself and level up my second Druid's Mining/Herbing professions? Will I encounter Ban'thalos, the stalker, a thousand more times? Who knows, but one thing is certain... Rare pets seem to love me...

PS - I'm sorry for the giant wall o' text.

Here's some screenies of my new aquirees:

My two Skarrs together. One belongs to Wesleytiger and is named Steelynx. The other is unnamed, currently.

My Ankha and Magria pair on Wespuma/pumy.

And because my plethora of Ban'thalos wants their share of the spotlight, here are my fellow owls that have a crush on me (shame I can't show them all off at once)...

-----NEW EDIT ON OCT 18, 2011 @ 10:30PM----

"How many times do I have to run across rare pets in one month?! I just spotted Ankha!!"

That was what I told my guildies when I stumbled across Ankha in route from Mount Hyjal to tame the Emerald Spirit (a ghostly green owl in the Stonetalon Mountains). Their reply was simply, "'Til you get sick of it."

It goes to figure that I pass over her on the SAME FREAKING Hunter that I have TWO of her on already. Wespuma also already had Ankha, but Wespumy, the same one I nabbed Magria with just yesterday, didn't.

So once again, I load up my dual-boxing setup and log in on Wesleytiger and Wespumy. I check my 5 pet slots on Wespumy and my heart sinks... They're all rare pets I've tamed! King Krush, two Ban'thalos, Magria, and Skarr (I was mistaken when I said I tamed Skarr on Wespuma... It was Wespumy... oops XD). I breifly consider abandoning Krush, as I'd only gotten him during my breif camp for Loque in the Basin, but I discard the though and fly to the nearest Stable Master (the Shrine). I deposit my two spirit owls and head back, praying that I'm not too late. Sure enough, I find her again, with no nearby Hunters to steal her away. I was already naked from yesterday's tame, so I swoop down in a safe area and tame it, attracting the attention of a nearby fire elemental in the process of course, but the result was the same as Magria, a new spectral tigress!

Of course, with all the luck I've been having, I haven't been shaking so much from shock. It's almost as though my body keeps expecting it even though I'm not!

Anyways, I logged back out and back on Weslytiger to resume my travel route to the Emerald Spirit, which I got easily. It's not a rare, but it's definately a unique owl. So ghostly and pretty!

Here's my Ankha pair that I took a screenie of as I was taking screenies of everyone else.

Did they hear something?

--------ADDED 10/21/2011--------

Lookie what I managed to snag today during the wait for the Headless Horseman queue to pop:

Image

The left-side Loque belongs to Wesleytiger, a buddy that I've had since mid-WotLK. The one on the right, however, is brand-spanking new, belonging to Wespumy.

I've actually been doing occasional checks on Loque's spawn points to see if he's been up during the last few days. I usually don't spend more than 2 trips around Sholazar Basin before I go about something else. I actually intended on nabbing Loque as I level my second Druid's (Weskitty) Mining and Herbalism, but alas now I have less motivation to level it upon completion of today's tame.

It all started when I logged over to my main Hunter, Wesleytiger, and queued it up with Wespumy for the Headless Horseman fight. Now, since Wesleytiger has Engineering, I had the Northrend Wormhole item in my bag. Since the average wait time in the queue was around 4 minutes, I figured, hey, I'll just tele to SB and see if I can sniff up a Loque or King Krush (Wesleytiger doesn't have Krush) while I wait. So, I did so. At first, I considered checking the northern-most spawn first. After all, it WAS the closest spawn point upon teleporting to SB, but instead, I decided to follow my usual clock-wise path around the edge as I always did. The first six spawn points turn up nothing. I figure that I'm just wasting my time, but I go to check the last one, anyways, the northern spawn point which I opted to save for last.

So I arrive, but the game is being a prick to me and not "updating" the area ahead of me, so I hover over the spawn and wait a couple seconds, knowing good and well that there's probably not going to be anything.

Next thing I know, I see the gorgeous zombie-like cat materialize below me. I start getting a case of serious shaking as I realize that he's ACTUALLY THERE!. Loque'nahak, he same cat which I spent countless hours of non-stop camping over a 4-day period to get on Wesleytiger so long ago!

However, there is a small problem. This IS Wesleytiger that I found him on. By the time I summon Wespumy to tame him, someone might come down and nab the tame/kill for themselves. Never-the-less, I don't hesitate and land, beginning the "Have Group, Will Travel" summon. Before I accept the summon on Wespumy, I make sure that I have a spare slot open and dismiss my current pet. I did not want a repeat of my Karoma tame back when Cata first came out (was trying to tame and didn't see that I had an active pet out).

One accepted summon and Tame Beast cast later, Loque was mine!

Oh, but we're not done, yet. My lottery winning-like luck proved itself yet again as I was doing dailies in the Molten Front with Wespuma and Wespumy. I decided to cast an Eagle Eye to spy on Deth'talic's and Skarr/Karkin's spawns. Deth turned up empty, but Karkin, however, showed up on my mini-map when I spied on its northern spawn location. As usual, I hadn't done the Druid of the Talon dailies (Shadow Warden dailies are a lot more multi-boxer friendly), so I had to take the route by the edge to get past the fire field. Karkin was one of those rares that I didn't have on ANY toon, so I figured that I would get Wespumy over there, log Wespuma out and log Wesleytiger on, summon Wesleytiger to Wespumy, and tame him.

All goes according to plan at first. I reach the rocks (no Kirix along my route to stop me, thank god), hop flawlessly across the floating rocks, getting the haste buff in the process, and attempt to summon. "You can't do that here," is the stupid message I recieve. I forgot that summoning here isn't allowed. *headbash*

Whatever. I go to Plan B and decide to tame him on Wespumy here and now. I already have the 100% haste buff from the rock jumping, so I don't bother switching specs and go straight for the tame. My future crab buddy decides not to fool around and go straight to the five-second cast. Pash. Whatever, my taming time with the haste buff IS five seconds, so I keep going. As predicted, my tame finishes RIGHT when Karkin was about to finish his cast.

Behold my first Karkin!

Image
The gem beasts look nice together like this! :D

Geeze, how much longer is this kind of luck going to last?! I'm ALMOST getting a bit sick of it...

You know, one thing I've noticed is that anytime Magria is tamed, Ban'thalos shows up not long after. I've seen it happen about three times now - to the point where I wonder if it's not something more than coincidence. But you've got some amazing stories there. Very fun to read, and I've had luck like that a few times but only when I've been rehoming things.

I've heard about that, but I believe that it's just a coincidence. Many people like forming theorycraft when a few people experience the same situation. I've heard some people say that Banny spawn an hour or two after the Tigresses, yet I encountered it within minutes just yesterday. Who knows, though.

BTW, added screenies and my newest story about my continuing luck... Hooray for newly aquired Ankha (a couple hours ago)!

I really liked your post! And your ss's are gorgeous! I'm usually not a fan of Ankha but your shot of her (or hers lol) is so pretty.

and you have 2 banthalos for each toon?

no one needs multiples of rare spawns.

Nice stories though. Grats on your tames

Thank you! Glad you enjoyed it. Thought it was funny how I managed to screenshot them as they were BOTH turning their heads. lol

Normally, I wouldn't go for multiples, but because of how suddenly I encountered them, I nabbed them, anyways. I see no harm is using one Banny for PvP and the other for PvE on each toon. Now as for THREE Bannys on one toon, no, I would never do that, no matter how sudden the circumstances are. That's why I helped another Hunter get him the last time I encountered it.

BTW, I see that we're on the same server, yet opposite factions (Llane). If you're trying to get Ban'thalos or some other rare, perhaps you'd like to add my RealID so I can give you a heads up when a given one is up (as it appears that my insane luck isn't going to be ending anytime soon judging from my encounter with Ankha yesterday). PM me if you're interested (I'd rather not give my e-mail openly on the forums).

Oh, and thanks for the gratz-ing! ^^

I've had the thought to tame Karkin more than once, only because he usually dies 10 minutes after popping up, but luckily I can usually find someone who can get there quickly. I figure if no one at all is near and trying for the pet or wants the pet after you advertise its up (only do this is your server isn't full of aholes like mine, the pets usually die) then go ahead and tame a second one. There is one hunter on my server who has two Skarrs and two Bans, one spec'd for pve and one spec'd for pvp. I myself had two Kirixes at one point because the poor guy was up for several hours and no one could manage to tame it.
