There's already two discussion threads for the new pets in this expansion, and the mantids are meant to be humanoids, not beasts.

I wonder if the Mantids will be another branch of the Silithid/Nerubian 'family' or if they'll be a separate race.

That would be cool i could see them also being in the ravager family

or maybe something like a Stonescythe

Mantids are humanoids and given their figure, they're most likely going to use Nerubian Vizier animation skeleton. Perhaps they will have some mantis with them you could tame.

And what you called Stonescythe is actually called a "rock flayer" in general. Stonescythe is just a nickname for one group. They're humanoids too (even if very primitive ones, like Kobolds or Yetis).

Well, the more you know...

when i heard during the beta (never got to play cause i wasnt one of the lucky ones) that they were tameable i squealed but then they came out as humanoids in live and i was sad but as awesome as they are, they stand, walk, and run on legs not arms & legs which if you notice, no hunter pet can do, i think that key part of evolution is what blizz uses to decide whether something should be tameable or not

the mantid i believe i read was going to be a planned boss in one of the raids or dungeons, and im super excited to see what they do with the cranes and tigers, the tigers are already common and probably gonna be tameable on Pandaria but the cranes can go either direction

Yeah the mantids are a race of people who live behind a wall and every 1k years they attack or something.
