By a Stroke of Solix and Deth'tilac...

Because my previous thread's first post was getting clogged with so many constant updates (because that's how insane my luck has been), I'm just going to start a new thread each time I obtain new rares and update the old thread accordingly. I'll probably put a link to it in my signature when I unlazy myself and decide that no signature is no fun. XD
So anyways, onto what everyone reading this thread is REALLY here for...
Before I start, let me say that Ban'thalos has not been doing so well. Appearently, after how I turned him over to another Hunter the last time he spawned, he's held a serious grudge against me, as he hasn't spawned ever since (THANK GOD! *throws a party*). Poor owl is probably in a state of rejection after the 4 other times I tamed him and showed him so much love and appriciation. Please, if any of you see Ban'thalos, send him a hug for me before you or someone else tames him. Let him know that I'll never forget how he blessed me with such amazing hax luck and made my life worth living. May Elune watch over him and his many clones... *salutes*
Okay, down to business... Normally, Spiders are not my thing, rare or not. They've never appealed to me, even the flame-spiders......... They still don't, but given their respective challanges which they presented to me today, I had to answer the Pokemon-trainer instinct screaming from inside my heart when I saw their respective dots while Eagle Eyeing for Deth'talic.
First, I located Solix while spying on Deth's spot. Deth wasn't up at the time. This was the second time Solix had appearred to me. The first time, he was killed by nearby players after I failed to tame him (probably ran out of energy and died because he reached zero), so I was anxious to redeem myself.
Being a Hunter that lacked the Entrapment talent from the SV tree, I knew that this would be difficult. That thing is freaking fast even after a slow effect. (It also didn't help that I didn't think about Aspect of the Cheetah x.x) First attempt was a flunk. Died because he caught up to me after Disengage. As this point, I knew that without roots, this would be impossible to do solo. Luckily, I had dual-boxing Hunters, an advantage I decided to abuse. The plan was to set a couple of Frost Traps along my kiting route. Then, once ready, send the pet in (on Wespumy, the Hunter that was NOT going to tame him) and stall for some time (not alot, but a few seconds can mean everything). Then, have Wespumy get its attention and stall for even MORE time. Flaw #1 in said plan: macros and Keyclone. Whenever one fires an Arcane Shot, guess what the other Hunter does? Fires an Arcane Shot. It was usually a coin flip to see if I got aggro on the right Hunter, but after a few tries, I managed to use Keyclone's Override feature solve the problem, so a couple tries later, I had phase one of the plan mastered: use Wespumy and his pet to stall and kite away from Wespuma and die on the far side of the cave. Wespuma gets a single shot on Solix to ensure that it comes back to him after Wespumy dies.
In the next attempt, I managed to perform phase 1 flawlessly, dying at the far end of the cave and leaving 70 energy left to stall out. Of course, it's now SPEEDING across the cave like an Indy race car, but as it's coming from the other side, Trap Launch a Frost Trap in time to slow it and get a Concusive shot off. and maintain my precious distance. Not long now. 65 energy.
Then, the unexpected happens. Suddenly, a nearby Warrior charges in and grabs its attention. At first, I start freaking out and want to scream out at him to stop. This is exactly how I lost Solix the last time I saw it, some idiot charging in and stalling the rest of his energy to zero (zero energy = dead spider). However, there IS one thing different than last time and proved to be my saving grace: he still has slightly above 50 energy (I think it was 52). Because of this, Solix still had his insane buff for a full two seconds to take a good chunk out of his health before he lost the buff. Time ticks by as the lava spider and the Warrior face off, his precious energy dwindling down. 45... 40... 35... 30... At 25 the spider delivers its killing blow to the Warrior and focuses on me again.
As I play it safe and slow him with a Concussive Shot, he hits the 22 energy mark. I begin the tame. The energy continues to dwindle... 20... 18... 16... 14... Every second that passes on my tame, 2 energy dissappears from Solix's energy bar... 10.. 8... 6... I get nervous, hoping against all odds that my next repair bill won't be all in vain. As he hit 2, he turned friendly and joins me at my side obediently, and I breath a sign of relief. At long last, I redeemed myself after my first failure over a month ago.

I still doubt that he'll really grow on me, but he'll be in my stables should I change my mind.

As for the Warrior that almost cost me the tame, I couldn't tell for sure if he was either helping stall him, or just being a jerk, but out of courtesy and realizing that I still had the spider, I said thanks to him for stalling it, but I did not tip him at the time. However, I may send him 100g in the mail, anyways. I'm still unsure of his true intentions and don't want to reward him if he was trying to kill it instead.
Moving on, now. As I leave the cave, I decide to sneak an Eagle Eye over to Skarr/Karkin spawn. Nothing. I then Eagle Eye the spire wall by Deth's spawn. I hover my cursor over the suspicious red dot to confirm an un-touched Deth-talic. Before I get too excited, I look at my 5 current pet slots. Full on BOTH toons. Wespumy is all filled up on rare-spawns I would not part with anytime soon. Wespuma, however, has only one non-rare: the Emerald Spirit owl that I tamed a few days ago. There will always be more Emerald Spirits for me to get, and I already have one in Wespumy's stables, so I abandon it and head to Deth's place.

There he was in all his glory. The ultimate taming challange which I really wanted a shot at. The last time I saw this guy as a non-pet, I helped a Hunter trying to get him by constantly sending my pets in to get them Death Striked and lower Deth's health. However, there were already other players hitting it. The Rogue and Mage invised away, but that left two more players (a Warrior and someone else I can't remember). Both of them got Death Striked down, and a poor Hunter watched her many hours worth of camping die in front of her, all wasted...
It's been 2 months since that ill-fated encounter. Many times, I wished that I didn't send in that one last pet to get Death Striked down. Had I known that there were two players unable to wipe out their aggro, I would've taken that into account when I sent in my pets. To redeem myself I explained to the Hunter how the taming challange works and promised that I would help if he spawns again while I'm online. Haven't heard much from her since then. Chances are likely, however, that she got her spider after this long, so I'm hopeful that she got it after my explaination of the encounter.
Anyways, back to reality... I lack the Entrapment talent to root Deth while I revive my sacrificed pet, and I fail at quick use of the Trap Launcher for Snake Traps, so I turn to my dual-boxing setup once again. I decide to have Wespuma, the one that will do the taming, have no pet for the whole encounter while he kites, while Wespumy does nother more than send his pet in, get it killed, revive it, rinse and repeat until 20% when Deth'talic losses his "Can't Touch This" buff (bad pun, I know).
So I begin doing just that. Then, midway through the attempt, I get the idea to record it. However, there's one problem... Fraps isn't loaded... So WHILE kiting AND reviving pets, I load up Fraps and begin recording. Luckily, everything's still fine...... until I screw up and get Death Striked. Deth was at 39%, so close! But hey, at least now I can catch the whole tame on video!
So I start attampt #2, sending the pet in, letting it get Death Striked, reviving, etc, etc, you know the drill by now. Everything works out this time and I get a brand-new spider, overcoming the challange I so eagerly wanted to try, even though I sorta cheated by dual-boxing it. ^^;

As I mentioned, spiders just aren't my thing, no matter how cool their skins are, but the taming challange and the Pokemon trainer instinct together is simply too much for me to pass up. And who knows, maybe one day I'll grow a liking to them. If any spider has such a chance to change my mind, it's definately Deth. He's the only one I like in the smallest bit, but that, together with my rewarding efforts to tame him and Solix, may be all it takes to tilt me towards the spider fanbase.
