It's Guy Fawkes on the 5th so are you doing anything for it? It's my fav holiday of the year and it has not been overly commercialised like other holidays like Haloween or Xmas as in it's has not fuly lost it's meaning.
I'm going to my mates 21st birthday party. He's haveing it on Guy Fawkes night and so we are haveing a huge bonfire in one of his cow paddocks with lots of fireworks and fun!
So what are you guys going to do? Light some fireworks at your house or go out? I can't be the only one here who has fun at Guy Fawkes.

What was the meaning again? I mean, Guy Fawkes tried to blow up parliament, and was caught, right? And I know the holiday has something to do with evening fires and mayhem, but what is it about exactly?

I know New Zealand is part of the British Commonwealth, but it had never occurred to me that Guy Fawkes Night would be celebrated there.

Fawkes was an Englishman who converted to Catholicism. He joined a movement that was planning to assassinate King James I and place a Catholic king on the throne.
The movement managed to rent a room of some sort underneath the House of Lords and used it to store the gunpowder they were collecting for their plans (hence the name The Gunpowder Plot). Someone tipped the government off and they went to search the room. In it they found a whole lot of gunpowder and Fawkes, who was guarding it at the time.
Fawkes was tortured until he gave up information about the plot and was sentenced to but hung, drawn and quartered. (apparently they didn't kill you by hanging, they just let you dangle there and suffer for a while before taking you down). When they took him up to be hung, he got loose, jumped off the scaffold and died.
The holiday isn't celebrating Fawkes himself. Instead it's celebrating the King escaping assassination. Fawkes is burned in effigy as part of the celebration. It's kind of evolved into a generic fun celebration in modern times.

It's kind of akin to the 4th of July in the US. It's a patriotic holiday, but most people celebrate it by drinking, partying, and watching fireworks go boom.

Remember remember the fifth of November. Gunpowder, treason and plot. I see no reason why gunpowder, treason. Should ever be forgot...

hehe. I got into it more cause of V For Vendetta. I see more people celebrating it more cause of Guy Fawkes rather than the king escaping.

It's never ment to be about celebrateing Guy Fawkes himself but about stoping the plot he was involved in. I mean the world would be very differnt if it went the way he wanted it to go.

Lol nope. V for Vendetta made Guy look more like the guys from Valkirie. Trying to do something good but failing, but he was more like the shoe bomber, going to do something bad and got caught
