Simple answer: when said pet becomes inaccessible in-game. And given the changes coming in Cataclysm, I suspect that we will be seeing a few of our favorite skins either needing a move or maybe even just phased out completely. So...might be best to be warned and grab these guys before they go.

Here's a couple that I'm thinking about getting, just in case they disappear.

Silithid Ravager - If Thousand Needles is flooding, what happens to this guy? Unique Silithid skin, only available there.
Ghost Saber - The Screenshots make Darkshore look like it's been turned upside down...who knows what this does to the Ghost Saber ruins?
Diseased Black Bear - Apparently the zone is going to be a much happier place...possibly with non-sick bears?

Any you guys might see? Do you see these staying in-game anyhow?

Something to keep in mind is that there will be a beta phase, so we will know what is going to disappear before it actually disappears.

Yes, luckily we'll have plenty of time to hear news from the Beta so that we can see for certain what pets we may want to tame beforehand.

If it turns out that the ghostsaber is going to go, I'll definitely clear up a slot for him on Illidius.

Ugh, it's changes like this that make me go into a debate whether I should have my pink bird or go and get the clutchmother since the clutchmother is likely to go, too. Naw, I'll just make another hunter.

Very true...the beta will make things a bit easier. However, isn't there supposed to be some in-game events coinciding with this? If so, there's a chance that parts of the world could change pre-expansion in a patch...which may not have nearly the beta time.

Either way, here's hoping that they release the new stable system before the world completely changes...I'd totally like to grab one or two of these guys without giving up my other pets.

The lead-up to Cataclysm will be patch 4.0, in all likelihood. That's when the mechanics changes and the stuff that affects everyone whether they buy the expac or not will be implemented. That patch won't drop until after the beta, when Cataclysm is just about ready to ship. With Wrath, they gave us about a month between the drop of 3.0 and Wrath actually hitting the shelves to get used to the new stuff, if I remember right. I think there'll be plenty of time to rescue endangered species once we get a look at the beta and have a better idea of what we'll be dealing with.

I've been thinking/hoping the exact same thing patch 4.0, I'll go tame all unique skinned/rare pets that I can lol (and ones that have skins that may no longer exist)

Also remember guys, they're adding in the destruction patch by patch, not all at once, so we can't really be sure when something blows up 'til it happens. Also, I highly doubt that any of these skins get 'canned'. Ghost saber where he is at now seems to be far away from where the main rupturing is going to be, because the figurines are in the very far north, while the main places getting hit is Auberdine and the beaches/southern Darkshore. The pet we should be most worried about in Darkshore is the Strider Clutchmother, but Blizz can always have her spawn elsewhere in Darkshore.

As for the Silithid, he is NOT a unique skin... You can tame a tan Silithid in the Temple of AQ, so don't be too worried about him.

And finally, the bear, which I believe will either be moved to EPL, or left as a rare mob skin keeping an ever-so worrying reminder of what once was and could become again, or move their spawns closer to the WPL/EPL border.

I doubt Blizz will remove a lot of pet skins. The community would feel it as a betrayal. Giving them pets, then taking them away...

Sarcasm aside, I'm thinking they won't completely take out any skins on purpose. Most likely will add them in to some other area.

My thinking too. I don't think they'll get rid of any, otherwise new hunters would never be able to tame them, and that wouldn't be right.

Well you have to remember the ONLY cases this applies to afaik are Ghost Wolves. Gezz and the Sapphire Hive Queen. The GW are the most annoying as Blizzard even said that GW's would remain tameable. But Gezz and the queen were removed from the game basically when they were retired without warning :/

Though I am keeping hope alive that they'll be brought back somehow- as that was how serpents were made tameable I hear. Accidently classified as Wind Serpents; then made tameable but.. yeah.


Anyways I agree with you; it's not that hard to change skins or place different mobs in places.

I was extremely bummed to have not been able to tame Gezzie before she was taken away. The day before the patch was released I had gained a few extra levels (just in case I would have to try and solo tame her), bought myself a flying mount, grinded my way through the questline, and gather the mats I would need to finally summon her. Needless to say, when I made the fateful discovery the next day (damn me for needing to get some sleep before work), I simply couldn't bring myself to play WoW for some time out of bitterness and grief!
