Say that pandarian ancient lore told of (insert cool dragon hydra name here) who's life was saved by (insert cool wise panda monk/beastmasters name here). As thanks the Dragon god taught him the secret ways to tame and befriend hydras. Since then it is concidered a high privillage and honor to have a hydra partner. These ways were now shared now that Alliance and horde have comrades from the Pandarin.

And please any feedback not include any versions of the phrase "Thats too complicated for the devs to do"
Its not something id expect the devs to actually put in the game its just my idea of if they realy needed some reason that hydras go with Pandaclysim this could be an idea

Though hydras originated in Greek Mythology, I don't think it's too big of a stretch to have them fit into an Asian theme even without some sort of story. They look the part, in my mind. I think they can definitely pass as aquatic dragons that would be feasible to see amidst Pandaria. There are similar creatures, such as the Orochi from Japanese mythology, and I'm sure many others.

Well, if there are some similar multi headed dragons in asian lore, that can be addressed with skins to make them fit the environment.

I don't think any new tameable family would get a special piece of lore to explain its tameability. It will just either be there, or not.

Hydra and basilisks are pretty much the two most notorious "4.0 holdouts", and I suspect they were held back to be easter eggs in upcoming xpacs, so I think there's a decent chance one or both will become tamable in 5.0 - as Andine said, not with any special fanfare, just a quiet change as they did with beetles.

In particular I think if they follow through with the pet respecs idea, it will make hydra more feasible - under the current system they're kind of a "tweener", e.g. too big and clunky for ferocity / cunning but too, well, ferocious, for tenacity. But allow them to shift back and forth without being perma-locked into one role or the other? Then I could see it.

Not sure if the original 4.0 pet feedback threads are still up at wow but there were plenty of people asking about Basilisks.

Yes, basilisks have been requested as pets since Vanilla just like hydras. Hydras have become more (in)famous because of the Spirit of Atha and some confusion in early Cata beta, but basilisks are still a very popular request.

OT, I also don't think that a newly tamable family has to be introduced with a story. Just look at the exotic pets that were introduced in Wrath - silithids and core hounds don't even exist in Northrend, they are Vanilla beasts that were simply tagged as tamable. So I think that it would definitely work to just make existing hydras tamable without actually putting any into Pandaria itself. Although I agree with others that hydras wouldn't look that out of place there. And I also wouldn't mind a new hydra model in the style of a Chinese dragon.

I'd actually prefer basilisks to hydras. But then I'm a known crocophile.

And the shortest answer to this was "the reason is the same for getting dogs with Cataclysm or core hounds with Wrath: because it should have always been there". While your story certainly isn't bad, it's just rather unnecessary.
