I stumbled across this on facebook. It basically claims there going to legalize selling horse meat for people to eat. The only thing is I can't find any legit link like CNN, Fox new, Yahoo new etc etc..

No, as far as I know this is true. It was done very hush-hush and nobody really knew about it...

Just to clear up a few things about horse meat:
the ban is only 5 years old. in other words, this isn't something "new". it is simply the lifting of a recent ban on horse slaughter, which was put into place due to a lack of funding for inspectors.
"baby horses" are never slaughtered.
neither are young horses.
meat from young horses is too tough and not considered edible.
horses at the end of their lives - in other words, horses that were going to be put down anyway - are the only meat that is fit for human consumption. (this is surprising to most people, as it contradicts every other meat humans eat: veal, lamb, etc...)
horse meat is FAR healthier for you than any other meat presently on the market.
it contains next to no cholesterol, is extremely low in fat, high in Iron, and an excellent source of protein.
set aside anthropomorphized prejudice that horses are "friends" to mankind, or "too intelligent" to be eaten... remember that PIGS are actually far more intelligent than horses (than dogs, even), yet no one has any qualms about eating pork.

Suku, thank you for posting those facts. That article was incredibly biased.

its the natural way of life, eating meat. Horses are made of meat and its only fair that predators can eat their remains. I dont see anything wrong with this myself.
EDIT: made it less insulting

hey, if God didn't want us eating animals, he wouldn't have made them out of meat!
(the variant on that joke is, "... he wouldn't have made them so tasty")
PETA: People Eating Tasty Animals
All jokes aside, actually, we have been eating horse meat for at least 20 years in my household.
It's a healthier alternative to beef.
I am also, morally, more comfortable with the fact that these are animals that have lead good, long, productive lives, rather than animals that were raised only for slaughter as soon as they hit adolescence.
It does require relearning how to cook meat, however, as it cooks VERY quickly, and it gets hard when overcooked.
We have had equine butchers for as long as can be, but it was only around 15 years ago that regular grocery stores started carrying horse meat in their meat sections. You used to have to go to a specialty butcher.

Consuming horse meat is in many cultures, especially in those, that relied heavily on them. Generally speaking, eating any meat is legit, as long as it is not cannibalism, the rest depends on your own moral values, I would never eat a horse or a dog, just because I find them lovable, equally, I wouldn't eat a snake or a spider, because I find them disturbing.

Well if the Horse was going to be put down anyway, then I suppose it's not so bad. The pig being smarter then dogs is another good way of looking at this.

Zebra tastes... stripey?
As I said, horse meat does have a few net health advantages over other meats.
It has a VERY high iron content (great for women who have trouble during.. ermm... that time of the month).
It is VERY low in cholesterol (great for... hell, everyone!).
It is also extremely low in fat content (ditto).
A word of warning to anyone who does get the chance to eat it for the first time...
Like game meat, it does have a pronounced taste.
Because of its high iron content, it has a vague resemblance to liver. I SAID VAGUE!
Thing is, once you get used to it, it actually becomes hard to eat beef afterward.

I wouldn't have a problem with horsemeat, although I am a horrendous cook and I would probably make hockey pucks out of it.
I've had all kinds of things in the past (snake, gator, rabbit, venison, elk, ostrich)... the main restriction to most of these is unfamiliarity bias...and in some cases, volume of production. Ostrich is great for you (although it goes tough as a boot if you look at it crossways) but it's awkward to raise. Dem eggs, though. Man. Omelette the size of your table. Best ever.
Elk's my favorite though. Blows the doors off venison or bison but damn is it hard to find (if you don't know a hunter). Frankly... I would RATHER see perfectly good meat turned out to our ever-growing population instead of wasted just because someone's unjustifiably squeamish about it. I've always subscribed to the philosophy 'if you kill it, you eat it'... I've been both hunting and fishing on many occasions, but I never killed anything I didn't at least make a valiant attempt to make into dinner (the mackerel I caught once was sort of a failure in the latter regard, eughhh). But the cat wouldn't eat it either, so... yeah, some things just aren't food no matter what you do. Horse can't POSSIBLY be worse than that. XD

my mother-in-law goes hunting every fall, and always brings me back moose and deer meat.
which is wonderful, because one of our most traditional (compulsory, in my family, actually) French Canadian dishes for Christmas is a sort of meat pie that has a whole slew of different meats.
We don't eat pork (see?), so the moose and deer are a nice addition to the beef, duck and lamb I put in the dish.
Can't use horse meat, though. This is a long-cooking dish. Horse would go tough as a hockey puck in no time.

I eat Possum regularly. Ring tailed possum to be exact not the ones you get in the states the Aussie ones. They are pests here and my uncle owns a company that shoots them on farms and in wildlife parks that sort of thing so he and his workers get alot of meat XD I make a killer Possum pie!

Some people also consume other "pet" animals such as guinea pigs on a regular basis.
And, oh my god, what a slanted, incomplete piece of work that article was!
I worked on a Pig Farm once with my uncle, and when I would help feed them and clean there troufs. There was this one pig that eventually remembered me, and would get happy to see me. He would put his hoofs up on the wall and watch me.

That's funny. Just across the Tasman, where possums are native, I feed scraps to the the possums in my back yard
