Hey everone. I made my hunter perhaps after a week when World of Warcraft was originally relased and i have a question for you all hunter/pet-knowers. I was thinking about something and was there ANY pet back in the days of level 60 and 70 that you could tame (Rare or Non-Rare) which Blizzard has removed/Made non-tameable? Lets just say there was one or two pets that i could tame back then, i got it like year 2005, been offline for 6 years and login today. Will i still have that pet?

So my question is was there any pet in the old school days that you could tame and therefore got like the only one left of it today?

The ghost wolf is one, though you can get Karoma which has the same skin but is a Spirit Beast not a Wolf. Also there is a hydra and a slime pet from early Wrath you cannot tame any more but people still have them. There may be a couple others but I think those are the main 3. My Lv 19 hunter twink does have the purple hyena, as far as I know you can't get that skin at Lv 19 any more.

Well... they are just reskins of other models but Thousand Needles is a good example of pets long lost, the purple hyenas, steelsnap the orange hyena, arikara (now untameable but still in-game), the brownish vultures, the needle stalkers (brown cougars), ridge stalkers (cheetahs)... i think thats all of the tameable beasts that are now either wiped out completely or made untameable.. least that i can remember.. but these are only NPC's that are no longer availible, the model can be found on other creatures through azeroth

Chimeras that were in Feralas are gone now too, the Chimeroks they were called, theres only one white one left but i think hes lvl 86-- and hes a new mob too, didnt exist before Cata

(and your right Loki, Snort went from lvl 19 to 31 and is 1 out of 3 purple hyenas in-game but the lowest one is still Snort)

Loki was completely right. I had that in mind that it was a Slime pet that you could tame. Loki do you happened to know the name of the slime pet? If dont do you have the name of the Hydra? Tnx

List of retired and extinct pets.

Retired pets usually had unique un-beast like looks and where retired for this reason, or they were heavily bugged once tamed (as with Death Ravager and Gezzarak the Huntress, both which are tameable again as those bugs have been fixed). During Cataclysm many pets changed levels or simply went extinct. While no skins where lost, some skins are now very rare to see at low levels, such as Loki said with Snort the purple hyena. He used to be level 17 (if I remember correctly), however now the lowest level you can get a purple hyena is 31.

Blizzard has never removed pets. If a pet is too controversial, like the worgen, Blizzard simply changes it by removing buffs or changing NPC IDs.

If you were playing way back in Vanilla, it's unlikely you have any skins that are now extinct. The dev(s?) in charge of WoW pets have been pretty good about making sure the skins are more available to all, rather than less available, going so far as to create new mobs specifically to put unused skins in the game :)

You may, however, have non-uniquely-skinned pets that are now extinct. The best thing you can do it look at your stable (I assume if you last played in vanilla, you only have 2-3 pets?), and look up the individual mobs on WoWhead to see if they're still in-game or not. In this case, the creature itself will be gone (many were lost in the Cataclysm), but the skin will likely still be available on another pet.

Oh, and you'll still have any pets you tamed back then. You'll also find the system completely and ridiculously different than it used to be, with 20-odd extra pet slots, no Pet Happiness or Loyalty system, no more trainable talents you have to tame pets to learn and so on :P

Just to expand my question alittlebit. What pets do you think blizzard will remove/Make untameable for the next expansion? Do you have any own ideas what pets to tame today which can be removed in the next expansion? I just tamed a Seagull in thousand needles and got the seagull companion from Baradin Hold, hehe. So have you guys actually "stored" some pets which u might think will be extint? Thanks!

I would guess none will be removed. The last "glitch" pet was the fire patch and they took that away a while back.

The only way to know anything beforehand (such as what monsters are removed or transformed) is when PTR servers open and we get to see what will be changed in the following patch. So keep an eye out for the PTR forum section. ;) As far as I know though, Blizzard doesn't want to remove any pets. At least from the ones that were intended for taming in the first place.

While not extinct in terms of skins, all the animals from ZG were removed. Again, not rare or unique skinned, but all those are extinct now. Check petopia's extinct page here: http://www.wow-petopia.com/guides/extinct.html

And for the other part... I have no idea what blizzard will remove lol. There is no way to tell what changes blizzard will come up with, but it will be safe to say that even if it turns out that some are removed, the skins will be found elsewhere.
