Do you leave them be? Kill them? Does it all depend on circumstances?

Thanks!
And note this is about rares, not any old mob.

It's pretty situational for me.
If I'm levelling a character, I'll kill any rare I come across, and often go out of my way to seek them out since the xp gain is immensely beneficial. This includes Northrend rares and even spirit beasts. If they're up and I find them, it's worth it for the gold, loot, and experience.
I would never kill a rare that a hunter was about to tame, or in the midst of taming. If I found one by myself, however, and no one was around, it's up for grabs. I might try to look around and see if anyone's online that wants them if I feel like it, but these days I mostly just go ahead and take the experience.
I wouldn't kill the Molten Front rares as any character that would be high enough to see them would already be 85, and thus experience gain means nothing.

Haven't we already had a discussion like this before, started rather abrasively by someone who wound up getting invited not to return?
Personally, I leave the silly things alone if I'm not there hunting to tame them. If they aggro on me, I'll do my best to either get away or otherwise drop aggro. If not...guess I'll be eating a repair bill. Better by far that I pay 10g or so for being careless than someone who really wants that tame to come along soon after to find the crumpled corpse of their shattered dream on the ground

This describes me as well.
Sub level-30, I specifically look for them for the xp gain, especially the ones in Loch Modan.
30-60, if I see them, they go down, but I don't go out of my way to look for them, as the xp gain is lower.
60-80, I'd probably leave them alone, as the xp gains are lower again, and they are out of the way.
80+, I'd leave alone.

For me, if it's tamable, it gets left alone. If it's not, it's up for grabs.

If it's the middle of the day and I stumble across one that I don't want, I look around until I find a hunter that wants it.
However, if it's like 3 in the morning and nobody's online anyway, I'll kill it and take the booty (I need all the gold I can get).

Actually, there is a big difference between 'HERE'S WHAT RARES ARE OK TO KILL' and 'How do you react to rares?'. I think in this case, it's a genuine curiosity. It's all in the wording. The other was deliberately taking a moral stand. This one's just a question, and personally I think it's a good one!
That said, I suggest setting the poll up here, rather than on another website. Much more chance of people actually answering it, since people might not want to risk the possibility of being lured to a 'bad site' and potentially getting hacked.
For me, I tend to give in to the urge to kill rares. 99% of the time when I'm leveling, I'll kill rares when I come across them, mainly because of, as said, the XP and the loot. Extremely 'wanted' rares, like spirit beasts, or unique skinned tameable rares (especially in Cataclysm areas), I tend to stay away from killing. Instead I'll check and see if a hunter wants it, and leave it alone if I can't find one. I just have too much a soft spot when I see Sambas walking around, even if I could use the XP.
When I'm at level 85, I still find myself giving in to the urge most of the time, again because of the loot. I don't tend to kill tameable rares, though. Especially not specific ones like Olm, who I stop by to see every time I'm in the area. The only ones in danger of being killed are the Blasted Lands rares, because of their chance of dropping an orb. And even then, I usually avoid killing the tameable ones.

I don't kill Spiteflayer, a unique rare, but I hunt down all the other Blasted Lands rares.

I'll kill pretty much any rare outside Cataclysm for loot and xp unless another hunter is in the area. I've even taunted Alliance hunters and had them chase me to valuable rares before. I'll usually do a /who to check the zone if it's a rare I know many hunters covet.

Once a creature has been tamed they are no different from any other. Rares are not any more powerful than another pet, sometimes they might have a unique skin, but in others they can share an appearance with common mobs. Ressan's white model is not unique to him, but sometimes it can be fun hunting a rare specifically for the challenge or identity.

in Azeroth, so like, nowhere that requires an expansion pack to visit, i will kill rares, tameable or otherwise for experience, loot, and in the case of blasted lands rares, the draenyst spheres or whatever they are for blue items. But.. while i know Cliff Jumper is unique, he doesnt take anywhere near as long as a blasted lands creature to spawn (that or hes up more cause he's not as noticeable being tucked away in an abandoned house), blasted lands rares are definitely ones that can be quite rare to see so in the cases of spiteflayer and grunter, i'll /who the area and if no hunters are there or they're over 1 level too low i'll kill the creature. I want that sphere and i aint going to sit for 2 hours tagging it while looking for someone whos interested >_>
Outland rares... i dont recall any tameable rares being unique skinned but if there is any unique ones, i probably do know of them if someone jogged my memory and with it being unique, i'll /who all the zones of outlands since theres only a handful and kill it if i cant find anyone.
Northrend, i do not kill spirit beasts, i do not kill king krush willingly (he was murdered while i had him tagged once, the people who did it were same faction, they told me they thought i was afk and dying to him i guess.. all i know is that they said they did it to save me). Uhm.. i cant think of any other rare unique tameable beast other then that in northrend..
Cataclysm, i dont kill any tameable unique rare. I dont touch spirit beasts in general, i wont touch sambas, terrorpene, or purpously kill any molten front rares (any that do die that ive participated in is either from overkill due to other people getting involved and trying to gain aggro or actually purpously trying to kill, or its solix/skitterflame/deth'tilac which are difficult for the reason they can easily die
there are some rares in the old world that i leave alive tho.. not many but some i have a bond with but i dont remember anymore why i dont kill them.. well, cept for Rak'shiri when he was a Aqua saber, when he turned white i would kill him for loots and exp but i dont anymore now that hes aqua again
