I thought paladins were not a pet class...

Usually I skip the Lunar elders, but since they added the lantern pet, I made an extra effort to do it this year; for my first 3 toons this wasn't hard (just time consuming) as they were lvl 85... but the 4th I had in mind was a different story - my lvl 33 BE paladin. And I didn't want to hit any of the dungeon elders.

It took me 3 sessions, I had to hit all 3 continents (sometimes hand of protection was the only reason I was able to survive long enough to click through to the "complete" button), and there were barely enough elders to get me the 50 I needed, but finally today the end was in sight - I just had 1 more to get, and that was the elder in Blasted Lands standing outside the Outlands portal.

Having just finished Burning Steppes, I made my way down through Deadwind Pass into Swamp of Sorrows - as some may know DWP is now full of lvl 50 spiders, but fortunately it takes them a few seconds to drop down from their perches, so I was able to run by with no problem... followed by a hissing mob of the skittering nasty things. I proceeded on through the swamp to stop at Stonard and pick up the flight path, and noticed something... odd.

Three of the spiders were still following me - they were a ways back as I was mounted, but they were closing in. Only, my crossed swords combat indicator was off.

Curious, I waited to see what would happen.

Well they caught up, and just stood there. I apparently *could* have attacked them, as my cursor went to a sword on mouseover, but I opted not to try that... and the guards left them alone. Except for shouting battlecries every time the spiders went near them. Well at least the guards' *instincts* were right...

Image

What do you mean you won't take them? You're a stablemaster aren't you??

Image

3 slightly used spiders for sale - CHEAP! :P

Image

So I headed off for the final Lunar elder... when I got there, I decided to wait. Sure enough, a minute or so later, my 3 friends dutifully arrived to say farewell-

Through the portal to Outland, around the corner to the Org portal, and one more portal hop through the moonlight circle, and Jigokusai had himself a one nifty pet! :D

Happy Lunar Festival to all!

Apparently "Buddy" had some friends that wanted to try his trick to get tamed and have a happy home

My guess is that something happened (quest turn in, area discovery, flight path discovery or etc) right at the same time these mobs were supposed to receive the "drop aggro" event and return to their spawn points, leaving them stuck in "follow mode" - because no matter how far away I got, they never de-spawned or lost interest.

(Although as expected, passing through the Outlands portal got rid of them... sadly)

Or not! When I went to Outland sometime last week I saw one of those spiders standing just outside the Dark Portal, staring intently at it. I guess someone had the same glitch as you and when they passed through the portal the spider decided to hang around and wait for them to come back. XD

LOL

I didn't think to pop back through and check if they were still there.

That is awesome.

Ahh I have seen this happen on my sever. Guildie found a deadwind spider just chilling by the stormwind auction house. There is also a tarantula model spider that’s about lvl 37 that will do the same thing. (I think its from stonetalon? I’m not sure.) While I was doing the lunar festival I found one sitting by the flight path in Darnassus. He must have figured out that’s were all the noob players land= free lunch.

Hmm. If we were just talking about the spindly model I'd suspect it's something to do with the way that they sort of unfurl and lower themselves down on a webline before attacking... but you observed the same behavior in the tarantula model as well. Odd.

Aren't there tree tarantulas in stonetalon as well?

There is a valley with a bunch of spiders but I *think* they were all just wandering around on the ground.

Not 100% on that though.

Yes, in the area of Webwinder Hollow/Webwinder Path there are a couple of tarantullas stuck in trees. They're hard to see from the ground, I only noticed them while flying. They're in the "dead position" (i.e. lying on their back) but their health bars are full. And even though they show as hostile, they don't aggro and can't be attacked. The don't move at all, it's really weird. I'd post a screenshot but the game is currently down for maintenance (I'm in Germany).

Ok, now that you mention it I think I remember them - I'd suspect their "frozen" state is probably because they haven't developed an "unfurling / dropdown" animation for tarantulae like they have for the widow model, so they just used the "dead" position as kind of a placeholder.

Had one just randomly chilling at the Dark portal a while back. XD Apparently he was working on his Elder achievements!

Yeah that's what happened to me - probably followed his "owner" to the portal, and then got left behind.

Hopefully he got taken into a good home. :P

There are a few videos I found about this bug. Here is one: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=m1-z7Hvvj2A

Looks like these spiders that drop down have a very long leash and evade bug when dragged too far away from there spawn point.
