Regarding raccoons in the house, I have a story--apologies for the textspam, I promise I'm not trying to abduct your thread (but the mention of the havoc they can wreak requires this story

).

I moved from North Carolina back to my parents' place in New York around age 20, and brought my three Betta fish up with me in their bowls. I had a hideous flea infestation in my car (don't ask), so I flea-bombed the car upon arrival, FORGETTING TO REMOVE MY FISH. I was extremely tired and stressed from the trip, or I'd never have forgotten. I felt absolutely awful to find that my 2-year-old fish were dead bar 1.
A friend of mine slept over that night; she got the downstairs bedroom. I plonked my surviving female betta on the counter, and went upstairs to sleep. Unfortunately, one of my parents' cats pulled the screen door open. In the middle of the night, I was awoken by a ruckus. Going downstairs, I found that raccoons had invaded. One was in the bedroom with my frightened friend, having pulled a garbage pail down and strewn everything about while she stayed silent under the blankets. The other was in the kitchen. With. My. Fish.
All I found was a single betta fin. Not even joking.
However, I didn't blame the raccoon; it was just being a raccoon. It jammed itself up into a cabinet, so I laid a pear down on the floor outside of it. A raccoon hand reached out, cast around, grabbed the pear & vanished. Munching ensued.
A bit later, the raccoon emerged; I found it standing on the kitchen table, leaning on the window as if trying to figure out how to get out. I walked up to it and ran my hand down its back, very gently, just because PETTING A WILD RACCOON seemed like a good idea at the time. Then my cat jumped on it.
The raccoon promptly jumped down and found the open door

I was left with garbage everywhere, a dead fish (...piece), a pissed-off cat and a half-eaten pear jammed into the cabinet frame where nobody could reach it >.<
