Chickens! (New chicks!)

We got chicks the other day! We've been planning on getting a small flock of chickens for a while, and we finally got some starter chicks. Started out with Bantams, which are basically a smaller version of whatever breed you want. We got silkies. (
White and
Black)
We also got a Jersey Giant on impulse. Technically, we only went out to buy three Silkies. But after visiting multiple stores (one of them was awful, tons of dead chicks), we finally put a hold on the only silkies we could find. Turned out there were four of them. That store also had Jersey Giants, a breed they very rarely had. Well. Well then.

Our two white silkies, Elliot and Emeris. They're the biggest and boldest of the bunch.

One of our black silkies, Mort. He's… Unwell. Alive, but we're really not sure about him. At the moment, we call him Mort the Possibly Temporary.

The entire flock. From left to right: Elliot (I think), Quoth, Mort (pre-bath), Duck, Emeris (possibly).

Emeris looking moody.

They're very cute, the variety chickens come in nowadays fascinates me. I'm rather ignorant about them, but they are pretty cool :3

Adorable! I haven't gotten to have chicks since I was very young. We had a flock of bantam ... Rhode Islands, maybe? ... and we hatched out a few each year.
Like Dakonic, I find it just fascinating all the different looks and varieties these days. I went to a fair in California with a chicken show, and my goodness the hens!
My only advice on fowl: If your mother works at a pet store and the pet store unwisely decides to buy runner ducklings for Easter and not all of them sell, do NOT let her bring home the extras.

Haha, no worries, we aren't getting extras. We ended up getting four more today (had them ordered special), but we're fairly sure that at least three or four of ours are cockerels, so we won't be keeping them all in the end. We also have a quite large, nice chicken coop that we're working on cleaning up and finishing for when they get too big for our brooder.
It's funny to look at the new chicks, which are all about 3 days old, and then the older ones, which are roughly 11 days. The new ones look like toys, they're so small!
Three of the new chicks can be seen here- the chipmunk-like one is Owly, for her owl-like face (Cutest. Thing. Ever.) and the darker chipmunk is Umbra. The tiny brown one in the back is Mouse.

Mouse, Treble and Vladimir. (Yes, I named our Buff Orpington "Vladimir".) The age difference is only four days!

All those chicks are so cute. The cutest thing about chickens that I once found is how they can attempt to peck at shoe laces thinking they're worms. These little guys...I just wanna hug em!

Some chick close ups. These are some of our more beautiful chicks. They're growing adult feathers!

Mouse

Beverly

Java
They love hard boiled egg, and will happily eat it out of my hands. They've started to crowd around my hands if I reach into their brooder, anticipating food.

The pic of Beverly doesn't seem to show up for me.

The other two are adorable though. <3

Sorry, I couldn't help but think of Lilo's Pudge dialogue from the Lilo & Stitch movie

Moar pictures. They're getting really big, and their new feathers are gorgeous.

Java. We call him the Jungle Fowl because of his raptor-like face. I love how red his stomach feathers are.

Mouse. I like his feathers, too. Tan and black.

Quoth, the black silkie. He looks a bit… silly…

Vlad. He always looks evil.

Umbra. She's still the smallest, with only one or two new feathers beyond her wings.

Owly. I love her cheeks. <3 Oldish picture, she has more adult feathers now- white, tan and black barred.
