Pet Families That Need an Alternate Model

Over the course of the years, and as new expansions have come out, most pet families have offered at least two different models to be chosen from. Whether this new model is a completely different body type (flamespiders in the Firelands) or just the regular skeleton with some spikes added (boars and wind serpents,) there is a notable difference in appearance. Some popular ones, like spiders, cats, and dogs, have more than three or four different models! But sadly, there are still some neglected families that do not have more than one different type of model. Because most of these are old vanilla models, I won't include post-vanilla models like sporebats or fen striders, and rather concentrate on those that would benefit from a new look. Again, these would not be replaced models (no matter how improved it is, there will always be some that complain) but rather alternate models.
These are...

Bats.

Image

Featured only in a few zones, these undervalued creatures would make a good mount. They look great as companion-sized creatures, but full-sized, perhaps their older model and generally frightening grin turn off a lot of players who would otherwise use them.

Snakes.

Image

Though their current cobra model is fearsome, there are thousands of species of snakes in the world. At least one other model exists in the game, and many of those are not only critters but full-sized mobs with plenty of health such as Marsh Serpent in Uldum. More models could be added, of course, but this would be a good start.

Tarantulas.

Image

These may count as spiders, but all of the other types of spiders are based on the long and spindly-legged models. There are no other creatures with the typical hairy tarantula type body. If these neat arachnids could get another look, preferably with the "spiky" hair smoothed out, I would be very happy.

Devilsaurs.

Image

Although I personally believe their model is fine, they still have only one body type that comes in a pathetic four skins. Just a simple variation, like a sail on the back a la Spinosaurus, or perhaps a crest or two on the head would really spice up this terrifying troupe of theropods.

Hyenas.

Image
Ah, another otherwise interesting pet family plagued by what I like to call the "spiky hair syndrome." Perhaps samba-izing such creatures is not the best decision, as many people oppose his rockin' hairdo, but some smoothing out would certainly help these cackling scavengers attract a mate, or a potential hunter companion.

Tallstriders.

Image

My personal favorite when it comes to hoping for a new model. Though spending time on these forums has shown me what wonderful creatures the tallstriders are (Hahadori, I'm thinking of you) , I have never met a single person that uses a tallstrider ingame. Most people ingame think they are ugly, and would never use one. This seems like a terrible waste of a hunter pet. My proposal for an alternate model is a proper terrorbird. Something that actually strikes fear into the hearts of its enemies, with a beak that looks like it's designed for slicing through flesh and not plants.

Bears.

Image

These tough and loyal protectors are the preferred pet of most dwarfs. They don't currently have much variety in the few skins that exist, as half of them are diseased skins. A new giant panda "bear" skin for Pandaria certainly would fit the new expansion, perhaps a sloth bear or spirit bear?

Beetles.

Image

There are roughly 400,000 species of beetle in our world: so why is there only one model for these creatures? Although there are many bright and colorful skins available, the "scarab" body is the only type available at the moment. There are quite literally thousands of choices to choose from, so why not add a few new species for a new continent? Perhaps a bug with nasty mandibles like the tiger beetle, or maybe those with massive horns like the Hercules and stag beetles.

That's all the one-modeled pet families, so my work here is done! Post your thoughts: what possible models could help these creatures out? You can help the support with fanart, model edits, or real life images.

DOGS! For the love of Talos they need to be changed.

Well, this was mainly about animals having only one model.

The boar's "felboar" skin is very unattractive in my opinion, but it's still another model, so I didn't include it.
The dogs have demon dogs and mastiffs, both are very distinct and unique.

I believe the forsaken flying mount is a bat and the druid horde flight form is also a bat.

I would rather them at least be updated fully to be less boxy and choppy then to have a whole new model that could potentially look much worse then if they'd been left alone. Blizzard is known for taking the easy road out with beast models so I'm not hopeful that anything will ever come from updating the vanilla beast models.

Also not to nitpick either but the "spirit bear" is just a white /cream colored American black bear. Being half American Indian I have heard of spirit bears often. Just a different color but wouldn't mean it would be a new model. The bear skins definitely aren't lacking in color variations. :D

I wouldn't complain if we got another Beetle model!

As for Sporebats, I'd just be happy with new skins that were strikingly different from the current ones, which all look very similar.

I was thinking about updated tarantulas. We also need a jumping spider/salticidae model imo!

We also really need an isopod and/or giant isopod model. That'd be cool. It could fit in with beetles or worms. Preferably beetles.

I'm dying for a new bat model. While I'd like to see a touch-up on the original ones, I wouldn't mind if they stayed as is and we just had some updated skins as new mobs. There's so much potential when it comes to bats! I'm really surprised we haven't seen some new ones. I thought Cataclysm would have been the perfect time, Gilneas especially feels like a good place to have a new gothic bat model.

Tarantulas need some love for sure. They could do so much more with them nowadays, and their skeleton is sadly underused compared to the generic spider one. We've had so many new spider revamps over the years, I think a new tarantula would be a really pleasant surprise.

Beeeeaaaaaarrrrrrrs. <3

Translation: I concur. Bears are lacking in the way of variety, despite them being a druid form and that skeleton being applied to other animals (like skunks). There's got to be some more possibilities in there.

I wholeheartedly concur.

I'd love a bat spirit beast with a pitch black skin and green glowing eyes and a new model (of course)

And the tarantula model.. let's just say an update is overdue and all those real life spider pet threads make me want to bond with a fuzzy spider, but the tarantula model just doesn't have that effect.

I love this idea for a spirit beast. They could give it shadowy effects as well.

I was disappointed that the ingame Giant Isopod just used the cockroach model, as did the Locust. If you ask me, the locust should have the new cricket model now...

Anyway, the bat spirit beast is a cool idea! More of a "dark spirit" than "light spirit" as we have usually gotten with the spirit beasts.

I wouldn't say ugly. Many hunters think tallstriders are just too silly looking to be a ferocious hunter pet. Same idea with a moth or the old school worm model. They aren't fierce, so most hunters don't tame one.

I'll be naming my tallstrider Daffodil in MoP. I foresee unfortunate events for NPCs that attempt to make fun. :)

While not exactly an alternate model, the Cat family is missing an obvious skin. All the Cat models have the elongated canines of the Sabretooth - yet none of them have the coloring of one.

Despite the name "Sabretooth Tiger", the actual beasts were not truly tigers, but closely related to leopards.

A more accurate fit would be to use this unused skin or this other unused skin and add a mob with that look - note I said add, not change an existing mob, like how some hyenas were changed to mastiffs, to many hunters' distaste - such a cat would be an almost exact likeness of the real Smilodon that once existed.

Foxes only have one model, so do Warp Stalkers and Rhinos and Moths, they all need a little loven.

But, those are all post-vanilla models, and are high quality.
