Computer Question [Windows 7]

Not sure where to put this so I hope here is okay. If not, could someone move it to the correct area?

Anyway, so I know have my husband's desktop since he is on the road with trucking. He altered some settings on his desktop so he could run a few games better that where higher quality than WoW. All I do is play WoW and browse and watch stuff on the internet. He can't seem to remember what he did, but I would like to change it back if possible.

So, part of the problem is images. I cannot put an image as a background, the "Personalize" setting looks like THIS. The grey boxes, I cannot even click on... When I click to change the background, it only gives me the choice of solid colors and that is it. :/

Now for pictures, it ticks me off a bit more because I like to look at the thumbnails for it is easier to organize pictures and know what everything is. Now THIS is what it looks like when I have the image setting set to "Large Icons". I have to actually double click the image to view it full screen.

I've tried looking up solutions on Google, but I am at a lost on what to even look up or how to fix this. If you need more screenshots of certain things, let me know. I hope someone here has the know-how on how to fix this for me. I just want Windows to actually look like Windows 7 and work that way. Oh and to make this all even more fun, my husband did the same thing to my laptop...well most of it. He said he can still change the settings back to regular Win7 and can see thumbnails of the images. So I don't know what the heck he did on here....

If I was to venture a guess (and I am), I'd say Aero has been disabled. See if you can select one of the Aero themes, that might open up more options once you've activated that. If it won't let you, you might need to do one of the registry tweaks (just google, should be easy to find).

I did see the Aero thing and wondered if maybe that is what it was. I cannot select them so I guess I will need to figure out how to enable it again and see if that works.

Well, I tried what is listed HERE and no change. I created a new account on Windows and it does the same thing.

I know it is harder to figure things out when you are not actually looking at the computer to search. But any other suggestions are greatly appreciated. (Well all except for reformatting....really don't want to do that.)

UPDATE: Okay I got the icons back for images and such. But I am still not able to put wallpapers on my desktop and cannot change the Windows 98 look back to the Windows 7/(Aero) type look. :(

UPDATE #2: Still can't get wallpapers to work. I get this message ==> HERE

UPDATE #3: Okay, so I got almost everything working. I got the Windows 7 look again with the smooth bar and textures and I can pick the themes again. BUT, I still get the internal error message though when trying to apply a wallpaper. When I try to choose something from Windows, it never shows up. No error on that part. The error is from when I try to make something like a photograph of my son the wallpaper.

Try the fix listed here, it sounds like it might be applicable: http://www.phuket-data-wizards.com/blog ... nal-error/

The %USERPROFILE% expands to something like C:\Users\<your-username>, but you can just type in %USERPROFILE%\AppData in the explorer bar and it'll land you right there, and you can browse from there on.

I tried what you link but no luck. I will see if I can hopefully find something though. :(
