Worried About Optimization

So, I've been letting the Optimization for the new patch run for about an hour and a half, and it's not even past 0% yet... does it not start progress until maintenance is over? The launcher screen says it takes "15-60 minutes on normal conditions." I don't want to have to wait days to play the new patch because of a slow download speed on my end or something.

I swear I remember a GM saying the first time you run it it may take a while.
I can't be 100% sure though.

Mine finished up after about 30min, all my downloading is done, so it doesn't have to wait till maintenance is over. I to remember reading that the first time you run the optimizer it might take longer.
Best would be to just leave your computer alone for awhile (no web surfing) and just let it focus on doing what its doing...go outside, go for a walk, find someone to torture, read a book, draw...ect.

OK, I left it alone for a bit and it's still at 0%, and I just got a new book, so that shouldn't be too bad. However, should I disable the screen saver if that's taking up CPU energy?

the optimizer took over an hour on my relatively fast computer.. and a half hour on my slower computer.. so there's no telling.
just... walk away... don't look back..
you know that old Victorian saying: "A watched World of Warcraft Optimizer never optimizes."
You won't see the percent bar go up from 0% to 100%.
You'll see it go to around 3%, then it will skip to downloading the last fragments it needs.
And when it DOES go to this, if the download rate drops to 0, just close the application (yes, once it's downloading, you can safely stop it) and restart it.
By the way, for those of you who have home-made shortcuts on your desktop to start WoW, the new application is no longer "launcher.exe".
It is now "World of Warcraft Launcher.exe".

For me it took 45 minutes to get to 1%, and then 45 minutes later it was done, so maybe it's just slow at the beginning.

When do you think the servers will come back up?
Also, the new log in screen is awesome, in my opinion. I like the music too. At moments it reminds me a little of the music from the original Guildwars.

Ive noticed that the first few percents are really slow, took like an hour to get to 3% then I went out for an hour or so and it was 100% when i came back.

Yep ^
My fiance told me it took him an hour to get to 1%, then the rest finished in under a minute.
For me? 2 hours at 0%, but I could hear it working, then shot to finished in about 5 minutes.

I'm also not on as a strong a connection as my fiance

Of course you did, this is a major patch. Any experienced WoW player knows when Blizzard says 11am, they really mean extended to 1pm, extended to 3pm, servers finally up, servers coming down 10 minutes later for an emergency update, extended to 5pm, extended to 7pm, finally up after 7pm, but still buggy and will require emergency patch Wednesday morning at 3am

Basically the rule of thumb ^^
I saw in another blue post somewhere (too lazy to search to link) that if the optimizer isn't working or failing to "optimize" you get the amazing option of reinstalling WOW.
Hopefully that doesn't have to happen to many of us today

Over an hour has passed since I started and I'm only at 6% so I'd definitely say just ignore it and let it do its thing.
EDIT: Welp, right after posting this it completed. xD

is anyone else as stressed as I am by the changes?
I basically dropped out of the beta when I just didn't have time to do it properly.
so I never really got to try out all the changes to Hunter.
I'm actually scared of logging in now.
(and I KNOW that all the addons I normally rely on will be "out of date")
BTW! Livestock, the pet/mount addon IS updated already to patch 5.

Oh yah today will be fun, wait til 2pm, get on keep getting dc'd every few mins or so, server restart.. then maintence comes at around 7 ish, people have issues logging back in after this so they perform an emergency maintence, then we have a lot of dc's until tomorrow when its mostly somewhat stable.
But yah I hear yah Suku, I didnt really pay much attention to my hunter changes so everything is going to be brand new. I am not even sure what talents ill be going 0.0

No reason to freak out. Just review stuff on Elitist Jerks as it becomes available, update addons as they become available, pick your talents and glyphs when you log in, and just hit the practice dummies until you get things down
