Beastmastery Hunter - Cobra Shot / Steady Shot
I KNOW I read that Steady Shot would be reserved for Marksmanship or Survival (I play neither, so that detail is fuzzy), while BM got to keep only Cobra Shot for focus regen.
Well, it seems that BM still have Steady Shot, and now Cobra Shot is level 81.
Colour me confused.

But leveling wise, I'm not sure exactly. I could've sworn on the Beta, Steady was taken away from BM hunters. I also remember not seeing Steady on live either but was it put back in via the latest hotfix?

BM has been using Cobra Shot all through Cataclysm. We have Cobra Shot right now, I don't know where you are getting this level 81?Sukurachi wrote:It seems that BM still have Steady Shot, and now Cobra Shot is level 81. Colour me confused.

Re: Beastmastery Hunter - Cobra Shot / Steady Shot
BM and Survival use it because that's how they refresh Serpent Sting. (MM has Chimera Shot for that, and then they get bonuses from using Steady Shot.)
Not surprised that nothing's really changed on that front, but I am surprised they didn't move Cobra Shot down to baseline for the specs that use it, instead of continuing to have a hunter wait until 81.

I only ever remember because I keep making hunter alts, and then being in a dungeon like "Baaaah I have to refresh serpent sting manually! Bah!"GormanGhaste wrote:Oh sorry, I saw 81 and was thinking 86. I'm going senile, I don't remember the beginning of Cataclysm stuff any more, too long ago

Same, on my baby hunter on the nesingwary server I made to hang out with petopians...I was like "Wheres my cobra shot?" and sifting through the spellbook 8934754 times.
I'm still not sure how I feel about waiting for both that and BM for so long. XD

why?Jessibelle wrote:I thought BM hunters were supposed to use Cobra anyway instead of steady.
Cobra causes less damage, despite renewing Serpent.
If Serpent has just been applied, there's no need to renew it immediately, is there?
Steady causes more damage on hit.
I don't get the "BM are supposed to use Cobra" thing.

I could have sworn it had a special proc on it that did something for the pet...can't find it. Still looking.

Re: Beastmastery Hunter - Cobra Shot / Steady Shot
I don't mean it's not fine to use.
I'm just a bit annoyed that I've been avoiding Steady just to "get used to the changes".. and... they don't change it.
So I borked up my usual rotation (not a major issue, but still) in preparation of a change to how Hunter abilities work, and then find out I didn't have to.

Re: Beastmastery Hunter - Cobra Shot / Steady Shot
And as said in the last thread on the subject (as well as this one), non-marks hunters used Cobra Shot throughout Cataclysm, so there's been no "change," aside from the removal of Steady Shot from the hunter specs that don't use it.
Cobra Shot refreshes Serpent Sting for the hunter. Marks hunters didn't need that because Chimera Shot refreshed it instead.
The skills are identical outside of the type of damage done, so I'm not sure how this borks your rotation regardless. :/

Re: Beastmastery Hunter - Cobra Shot / Steady Shot

Re: Beastmastery Hunter - Cobra Shot / Steady Shot
^ same here. Lol I think once you pick a spec you either learn cobra or steady depending on the spec once you've chosen. (Id have to check, but Im lazy)Kalliope wrote:I'm confused by this thread - my hunter doesn't have Steady Shot at all in BM spec at 85, only Cobra Shot. Steady Shot, which had been on a bar for backup, was replaced by a second Cobra Shot icon.
Nvm Id then assume that cobra replaces it at 81 then lol.

Re: Beastmastery Hunter - Cobra Shot / Steady Shot
my lower level hunters all have Steady.
they have Cobra in the Spellbook at 81, but there is absolutely nothing in there that says "replaces Cobra Shot".
With my paladin, there are spells where it is specified that "x spell replaces y spell" when you learn it.
Did Blizz simply forget to include that info here?

Sounds like it! Or perhaps it's a bug with hunters that didn't have Cobra Shot access prior to the patch....? Hrm.Sukurachi wrote:I've checked.

I wonder why Cobra Shot doesn't just replace Steady Shot when you can spec at level 10. Odd.

Re: Beastmastery Hunter - Cobra Shot / Steady Shot
And in the specs for MM, it includes Steady Shot as a base ability (no specified level).

Re: Beastmastery Hunter - Cobra Shot / Steady Shot
Yes, but that doesn't explain why BM gets Cobra Shot at 81 rather than getting it as a base ability, which is my question.Sukurachi wrote:it says quite clearly in the spec description that BM gets Cobra shot at 81.
