The Big Leak of 2010
There is alot of speculation of how this leak came to be or if Blizzard let it. Some say they are just turning a blind eye to this. There are alot of pro and con to this. Blizz is getting alot of publicity out of this. It really ramped the anticipation.

If by 'allowed' you mean that they knowingly used an insecure method of client transmission ...
As an aside, the WoW Insider post on this topic really, really annoyed me.

Re: The Big Leak of 2010
It's a great discussion to have. I was just annoyed by the ... inconsistent moralizing? Ignorance of development practices masquerading as knowledge? Complete avoidance of actual technical factors? Hyperbole about how massive and unprecedented this leak is?
...
Hmm. It's not fair on me to rant about someone else's article here on my own forum where they likely won't see it and would have to go out of their way to respond if they did. So I apologize, and I will stop ranting now.

It's completely understandable, Mania. Overall it felt very unprofessional. Unprecedented? Really? Do they not remember Wrath? Or TBC? Or all of the information that 'leaked' out of there?
If I had to wager, I'd say they realized that they were going to have a problem, waited until a leak actually started, and then gave Boub the go ahead, to make it more official. This way it generates a lot of energy in an area that people know about, and widely visit, and not on chop sites that might get the info wrong, for one, and might lead people to key loggers and hackers and the like.

Yeah but see.
THERES MORE SHINIES SO MORE NERD RAGE :O
anyways.
Tbh it might not have been leaked so much as some people told friends; who told friends; who told... I mean I know i'd have probably only told a couple friends I could absolutely be assured of their silence. But others don't really care or bother to make sure their friends are that loyal and reliable. Others probably just had bribed the info..
So yeah I agree that MMO 'leak' was done as a sort of control burn. Snuff out the other sites/leaks and get everyone to go to one SAFE source.
Re: The Big Leak of 2010
WoW Insider is extremely unprofessional. But then most big gaming news sites have a complete lack of journalistic skill, integrity and craft. WoW Insider just exemplifies that for this game.
As for the leak, of course Blizzard are aware that leaks will happen. It's free advertising really. That said I'm sure that people leaking information will have their alpha access removed if they are caught but I doubt Blizzard has people thoroughly investigating the source of every leaked bit of information on the net.
That said, I think it's terribly unprofessional for WoW news sites that consider themselves legitimate to post leaked info or to link to leaked info in articles by their staff writers.

This "leak" is free advertising - nothing more, nothing less.
It keeps the hype going.
