Hello Forum,
I just want to share two of my craziest tames that happened while questing in cataclysm, and I wish to hear your comments on any challenging tames that came upon you in Azeroth!

Ghostcrawler (The Notorious One)
So once upon a time I was leveling my mining around the Abandoned Reef (Abyssal Depths), so then out of the sand I see some kind of ghost-crab, so then I went after it, but it was playing some kind of trick on me, it was disappearing and reappearing (in the sand). So after looking him up and searching on wowhead, I decided to take up the challenge (I asked in general chat I anybody wanted him, but no one answered). I found him, targeted him, and started to tame him; at first he literally oneshot me to death, but when I learned a little more about the nerfbat ability, I took caution. So the second time I went for the tame, and I got him (with only 5% health left)!

Ankha (A Gift)
I was playing on my rogue, who was doing my Hyjal dailies; so on the one where you kill those elementals, I suddenly see a spirit cat. I knew what to do, I just quickly logged out from rogue to hunter, I traveled from Dalaran to Stormwind to Hyjal, flew all to way to the area where he spawned and thought I lost him (there were about 2-5 hunters in the same area). So I then saw him (or her) walking near the corner of the hills, so without hesitation, I flew there (a was being chased by mobs a lot) and started to tame him and I just saw him oneshot me! So I searched his statistics and then again I knew what to do, I went back into the game, found him again (thank you!) and tamed him with all my armor off. I guess some of you guys/gals are going to get me for not saying anything in general chat, but I had no choice because I had lots of competition (and they themselves will probably not say anything in chat too).

In the end I felt very successful from taming these two pets, just it's cool for having different pets in the stable. So what is the challenging tame that you ever came across? What did you do to overcome the situation? Did you feel relieved from getting that pet? So thank you for reading my first post on

Muninn [Ban'thalos] - Was about to start the Firelands dailies on my hunter when NPC scan goes off and alerts me to Ban's presence. I hadn't really cared much for the model itself since the whole "shiny wings that leave trails EVERYWHERE" thing wasn't very appealing to me, on top of the fact he was so high up there it seemed like entirely too much effort to bother taming him. The more I sat there though, the more I thought, 'well, it would be nice to tame him just to see if I can.' I mounted up and looked around, making sure there was no other hunter who really wanted to tame him. I looked up all the players in the area to see (surprisingly) no hunters in the zone. I figured what the heck, if there isn't anyone here and I've got time, why not?

Well, since I never had any intention of taming his model prior, I had never looked up taming strategies. I mounted up and flew to his height, fired off concussion shot and completely, totally, and utterly forgot just how high I'd flown to match his altitude. Ban didn't even need to attack me - gravity did the work for him. Feeling like an idiot, I resurrected and once again flew to Ban, this time mindful of the height. I scoped out the area around him, and wondered how the heck I was going to land softly without any sort of slow fall or parachute. Since this whole thing was trial and error anyway, I decided I'd simply mount up from the ring around the statue of Malorne, and immediately hit the space bar and just barely getting in range of Ban.

The first time it didn't work - though I was in range, when I hit dismount I fell too quickly and was 'too far' within a half a second. Good news though, I landed safely on the ring with a chunk of life left. That meant the ring idea worked. I mounted up again and waited for Ban to make yet another circle around me. Just as he was in range, I hit the space bar just a little more to make sure I'd have time to fire a shot and get his attention. I dismounted again and (hooray!) got his attention. I landed with a sliver of life left, hit Gift of the Naaru, Deterrence and then Tame Beast.

Then I realized I was naked. I'd been camping Magria for ~a half hour earlier and forgot I needed my darn clothes to, you know, tame other things. Ban swoops down in for the kill, and I was moonfire'd to death. At this point I'm annoyed - no way was I being outsmarted by a transparent bird brain - but I spotted a horde hunter nearby and wondered if they really wanted Ban. I gave up, resurrected, and hearthed home to Dalaran.

Days later, once again I was about to start questing in Firelands when NPC scan goes off and tells me there's this smug green owl circling the statue of Malorne. That time I didn't bother checking for other hunters, because that owl was not getting away from me this time. I came prepared just in case - I bought two health potions from the auction house, made room in the stable and set up my action bars accordingly. Oh yeah. I flew up, repeated all my steps from last time - except with appropriate attire and popping a health potion + Gift of the Naaru. First try and the crafty little owl was mine. Hearthed to Dalaran and spent two or three hours picking out a name. Although "Muninn" is a raven's name, the more I looked at him the more I liked it. It just sortof fit. (Sometimes I wonder if Arrogantbeakface would have fit in the naming box, though.)

I wasn't sure how often I'd use him, but as it turns out I rather like him now. We're still, uh, 'bonding', but I've found he's nice to bring out occasionally. The glow-y wings thing doesn't drive me as nuts as I thought it would. :>


Hrothgar [Skoll] - I knew long before I made my hunter that I wanted Skoll. I played through Wrath of the Lich King as a druid and always admired his model, slightly envious of the players who had the patience and time to level another character. I didn't really play much, so most of my time had always been spent on my druid. The one hunter that I had barely broke past level 25. Fast forward to Cataclysm and a friend sends me a Scroll of Resurrection with one free level 80. My first and obvious class of choice was the one I knew I would have trouble leveling - a hunter.

Right from the get-go I set out to tame all of my 'old' pets that were on my alt (I'd gotten a new account since Wrath and no longer had my old hunter alt). Once I had the pets I could remember, my butt was camping the Storm Peaks. I picked Beast Mastery specifically for this, even though I preferred Marksman.

Weeks upon weeks passed, and either karma didn't like me or my luck was on vacation. I had come across his corpse once, and saw him again being tamed by another hunter, but never by himself. It was depressing, but I was not giving up. I had his name picked out and everything. I had adventures planned for him darn it, and was drafting various RP backgrounds for him. I'd find that worg no matter how many weeks it took me.

One day I logged on, and my timing was golden as usual. The moment I could see chat in Dalaran, I saw a server restart warning pop and remembered the realm would be down for a little while. My latency was completely in the red zone too for whatever reason, and I nearly logged off. But thought to myself, 'wouldn't it be funny if Skoll was up because everyone else was logging off for the server restart?' Not getting my hopes up, I mounted up and flew off on my trusty, plain, purple-armored gryphon.

Right past Brunnhildar village, I spotted him. All alone, no hunters to be found. Dark blue with sparks of lightning and the most glorious sight ever. I started panicking because I can't believe my luck. The server had 13 minutes left until it restarted, my latency was out the window, and I could get disconnected at the drop of a hat - who knows when I'd be able to get back in since my internet is terrible. I said screw everything - forgot all the traps and just hit tame. My luck pulled through for me, and Hrothgar was standing beside my hunter with minimal fuss. I then logged off for the restart and quietly celebrated all day, even off the computer. :p

To this day he's one of my favorite pets. I'm not sure why I like him so much; I guess I just... do. Blizzard can make as many alternate-colored Skoll models as they like, or even change the spawn timer of Skoll to something ridiculous like 15 minutes, but none of them will ever replace the awesome presence of Hrothgar. :3

Deth'tilac was my most challenging tame. A lot of kiting, traps, pet sacrificing and slows and an epicly long duration (7 mins or so, most raid bosses are quicker!) with a Nelf hunter (I'm Belf, but was undead at the time) waiting in the wings on me making a mistake... To be fair she didn't try to interfere, and congratulated me when I got the tame finished

Getting to Chromaggus past Razorgore solo was also very tricky, and took me 90 minutes to get past him on my own.

Skarr's taming proved pretty challenging in BM spec without Silencing Shot (pre-5.0) to try and get the Tame cast off quick enough.

Terrorpene at 82 (iirc) was a bit of a sweat as well, wondering if I'd have enough health to survive


The new MoP rares aren't challenging, but they're fun! Finding and following the tracks to flush the new guys out into the open is a great mechanic, and I really do love it a lot. The only real problems with the current tracking model comes when phasing interferes with you tracking or taming.

Terrorpene:

I knew I wanted Terrorpene from the first day Cataclysm was released, and while I was still level 80 I saw someone had killed him. Once I hit 81 I camped and flew past his patrol area constantly, neglecting to level up until I had found him.

Little did I know that his flame spell was going to kick my butt.

I finally spotted him after a few days of late nights and more obsidium ore in my bags than I knew what to do with! I tried to tame him but had to feign death to survive his flaming wrath. I frantically asked my guild to send a healer my way, and while they were flying I asked in Mt Hyjal chat if there were any healers in the area! While my guildie was on the way, I snagged a local healer who came and helped me.

The first couple times we tried, the heals kept stealing aggro while I tamed! So we figured out that I had to DPS him down to about half-health to complete the tame. Grabbed him and he was my main tanking pet all through Cata!
