So, a friend of mine says he's read some leaked information that there will be one more expansion after this one, in which the Burning Legion basically leaves the world a charred husk. And after that, its game over. Except that there will be a mysterious "WoW 2" after that. Has anyone else heard this?
I admit this idea makes me very sad, and sincerely hope its wrong.

Well unless there's hard proof to back it up I would not worry about it. It's a rumour that's all. WoW will end one day just like every other MMO.

MMOs don't end, at least not this way. It would have to be a new game which is a total flop to get to that.

Blizzard said they'd make expansions as long as players are still playing the game, so I find it unlikely that they'll just end everything on Azeroth and make a second game. (They'll probably make a second game, but destroying Azeroth is rather unlikely.)

I'm about 99.9% certain your friend is wrong as this had been addressed a dozen times by blues. As others said in this thread, MMOs don't work like that and they'll continue to make expansions so long as people are playing.

Pretty sure I read somewhere that there's definitely more than one expansion in the works after this one. No source that I can recall offhand, but it's a good plan. We know that Blizzard already started work on the next one after this one, at least planning-wise, since we've been feeling the foreshadowing since MoP was released. It's beautifully crafted, I have to say.

It sounds like what your friend heard about was the thing the Black Prince show's characters where the world of Azeroth is bombarded with fire from the sky and is destroyed. Which the Black Prince is trying to prevent that from happening. which of course atm leaves a lot to the imagination and rumors are flying.

I think it was a blue poster and it was up on MMO Champion awhile back. Like a month or so ago.

WoW is going to end up like EQ or Adventure quest.. Or any one of those games.
It has no end. Ever. Even if it's not really a big thing any more.
They'll drag it out forever. Really. Forever.
They might not make too many more expansions though! It'll just be old content over and over with out end.

Well, truth be told, it still holds the crown. It's the King of MMOs currently. Nothing has beaten it yet.

I seriously doubt that the game will end that way. It will be around as long as at least a million players are still subscribed and maybe even beyond that. LOTRO doesn't have a million subscriptions but is still going strong with new expansions and content. The F2P model basically tripled their revenue and probably saved the game. I play it and it's a pretty good game with more realistic graphics than WoW.

EQ still gets expacs now and then, doesn't it? >_> Granted, I think EQ II flopped because that sort of punishing game play really is a limited niche.

Yeah I think it's up to it's like 15th expac now or something.

EDIT: Sorry I mean 19th! And it came out this year!
