Photoshop qu.

Heyas,
Lots of professional users on here so thought I'd ask here before the infinate wisdom that is google...when I made my new sig in CS5 (only used up to Photoshop v5 to v7 when I did my degree haha - yes it was that long ago!!) anyway I was trying to do a drop shadow just for castile/castilian but it applied it to the background layer as well.
How do you stop that? Do you have to do the drop shadow in a seperate image before you copy it over to the main image or can you limit the shadow to just THAT layer?
