Petopia's Most Wanted: Mudclaw's Guard Dog

This is one mob I've been trying to check for Petopia for ages now, but never managed it:
Mudclaw's Guard Dog

Apparently if you're on the Tillers' quest Haohan's Vote IV: Melons For Felons then you can see some pickable melons at the very south end of the farmland (see the guard dog location for info). However when you try to pick them, the guard dog appears and attacks.

I was hoping to confirm if it was tameable but when I did this quest on my hunter, I saw no melons. I delayed finishing it for days just in case they appeared later but no luck.

I'm posting this hoping someone else is luckier and can get details.
