Sparked by a few posts in other threads. Which do you prefer as your role in dungeons/raids...tanking, healing, or dps?

I personally prefer DPS...because I'm just plain bad at the other two. I tried healing on my pally once, researched into it, got all the right gear, checked out loads of different up-to-date tips and advice, and then tried to run a fairly simple dungeon. The group was surprisingly patient (I told them up-front I was new to healing), but we barely made it past the first boss and the dps-priest had to step in and help before we finally gave up. It was just too freakin' hard in practice. I never tried it again after that, I was just too nervous.

I've researched into tanking as well, but just haven't had the nerve to try it either. It sounds so complicated

I prefer DPSing (first on my rogue, and now more recently I love my hunter). It's not 'easy' per se, and there's still a lot of things to do, but I find it's much easier to focus on burning down mobs and occasionally keeping a stray mob off the healer than it is to manage mobs, threat, or topping off peoples' health bars.

Well, what about you guys?

I'm a DPSer / Healer, usually healing on pallies and druids, and using hunters and mages for DPS.

I love healing. Unfortunately for you, you tried it as the single WORST healing class in game for five man content. I love my paladin, so much, but paladins are the niche healers at the moment, and main tank healing is what we do. Anyone who tries to tell you that beacon of light and holy light glyph make up for it are wrong, wrong, wrong. A druid/priest/shaman can heal most/all of the group in a single cast and a good deal of health, while paladins can heal two people every 2.5 to 1.5 seconds for a lot. It sounds great in theory, but in practice it makes dealing with ANY form of AoE damage a pain. Not to mention that we have a distinct lack of "OH !@#$!" buttons. Holy shock CAN be a life saver, but a lot of that depends on luck, and your tank. Lay on hands is......hmmm. Lay on hands is an amazing spell with a painful cooldown. But at least it doesn't take all your mana anymore. You just have to learn to work with what you've got. Sacred shield is AMAZING, take it and the talent down in protection to make your life a lot easier, and pick up the four pieces of T-9 for that ungodly useful set bonus. After that, well, it all depends on your group. And situational awareness! You need that even as a healer, since you definitely don't want to stand in the fire.

Before anyone asks, I have healed at high level with all four healing classes, and paladin healing in FIVE mans is by far the hardest. Raid healing, however, is stupidly easy, since you sit there, target the tank, and hit holy light ad infinitum.

I enjoy DPSing. It is my second favorite role, and it's definitely one where I notice the difference if I am not doing it. I can't tell you the number of times I've been in an instance as a healer and gone "You know, this'd go much faster if I was on my hunter/DK/retribution paladin/etc." As a DPS, you have to develop a flow, but you also have to learn to pay attention while doing your thing. Still, few things make me go "Mmmmmm, hell yea." more then a 15,000 critical kill shot. ANd positioning mobs with blast wave amuses me to no end.

I hate tanking. I can do it, and I can do it well, but it's the one role that I do not enjoy, and never have. I don't even know why. Healing definitely feel's more stressful to me, and yet I enjoy it a ton more. DK tanking does not count, since that's just right back to a DPS race, just with a more situational positioning of your abilities.

Naturally, that's just my luck Since you said you've done all the healer-types, what would you say is the easiest one to start with? Maybe I'll try rolling one up on Nesingwary and using that char in randoms to learn the fine art.

Druids are by far the easiest healers. One rejuv will keep a tank topped trough 5mans.

Absolutely what Saturo said. Back in TBC my feral druid nearly healed better then my holy paladin. It was embarassing. The priests, and then shamans.

All my characters do dps.

DPS for me, I fail at tanking/healing and I doubt people would want that in their dungeons. P:

Hrm...I've got a level 20 NE drood right now in <Ominous Latin Name>. I'm enjoying leveling her feral right now, but maybe when/if I hit 40 I can dual-spec her and give healing a shot.

If you are interested in healing then druid is definitely the way to start. Don't get me wrong, I LOVE my paladin but right now they are the most 'difficult' of the healing classes outside of a ten or better a twenty five man enviroment. That MAY change in Cataclysm, though. Crossing my fingers. Being the only niche healing class just sucks.

priest is great for both pvp and pve and disc .. OMG! i couldnt live without it and in icc it is a life saver :3
druids are ok if you slack alot and tend to have a tv show that starts at the same times as raids (not my fault CSI starts at teh same time)

when i use to tank .. well i was a druid tank all the way though the game until uldar hit us then i went resto
ive had a dab at pala tanking tyvm my guild who wonderfully put me into ToC10 for my first time EVER tanking as a pala and it went well i had a warr tank with me i wasnt def capped and our healers were alts ... so it went well we one shotted all bosses though we did loose a dps on teh faction champs

for dpsing ... hmm hunters yeah mages ofc <3
now LOCKS! omg you have to have one dot dot dot dot dot dot dot <3 Rogues bah mines only used for icc to disarm the gas things in icc T^T and farm insane rep XD


then again a shammy is always nice to try my current shammy is ele though i have been healing in teh low levels

being a druid heals is FUN FUN FUN!

I love all three.

It depends on my mood on which I prefer the most, though overall, I'd have to say healing. DPS is second preferred still, simply because tanking tends to sap more of my energy. But I still love tanking. I used to fear the classes that had more buttons; now the ones without them feel too simple.

P.S. I still prefer my priest the most for healing. Druids are deceptively simple in appearance, but really require more thought than all that.

Haha...mayhap I will roll up a li'l priestie just for randoms-healing, until my druid gets to level 40...since I don't play her all that often anyway.

Kalli has the long and short of it. Priests are easier to play then druids on the overall, but druids are more effect if used intelligently.

priests in cata will be fun though
and ignore saturos rather un needed comment ....

back to topic
i would always pick my priest over my druid as its move fun you press more then one button (wow you can lifebloom spam and got afk and yes i can say it ive done it!)
even my bf is trying to leveling a priest and he likes how it is hard to do then again we dont like to faceroll

I do more than just lifebloom thank you very much!

but it becomes as waste of mana to do much else due to the fact no other healing class has worked out druids do hots and ofc your hots go wasted
thats why i only heal with my BF on his pala cas he actully uses my HoTs

plus priests are just <3 holy amg disc ... AMAZING <3
