Computer Issues

Hey guys, I'm hoping you can help me. I went to turn on my computer this morning and left it to load while I got dressed, but when I checked on it the fan was running loud as ever but the lights weren't flashing except the one on the disc drive and there was no signal to my monitor. I tried turning it off and on again so far with no dice. (I'm currently posting from my 3DS.)
If anyone has any suggestions as to what to try/check etc I'd greatly appreciate it.

Video card or monitor? Do you have another monitor you can swap out to check it?

I agree with Dewclaw.
Also it may be a hard drive failure.

The monitor seems to be fine, it's just not picking a signal from the computer. There are no storage devices attached either. And um, when I said the lights were flashing I meant the disc drive light is the only one that comes on. No power light, no loading light. Yet the fan goes.
I'll get someone to look at it when I can... I seriously hope I don't need to buy any new parts cos I literally have no money.

UPDATE.
So after some poking around I believe it to be a simple case of flat batteries. My dad can thankfully get the right type where he works, but it might be a few days until I get my comp working again.
Thanks for all the advice guys!

UPDATE 2
Turns out we had some of the necessary batteries stashed away so I swapped them over. Same results... this isn't looking good.

UPDATE 3
Never mind, turns out I simply hadn't set all the cards in their slots properly. Everything is working fine.
