Kaa Has Arrived! The Reticulated Python

So, after I moved I finally took the leap. Since it's legal to own them here I went and got a rather large constrictor. He's already been worked with for a couple weeks now and he's eating like a champ. When I first got him all he wanted to do was strike and bite bite bite. Now, he sleeps in my sweatshirt while I watch TV, and gives the cat mean looks because of Raven's nature of pouncing and annoying small critters. However, he should hit 10-12ft within the next three years, and top out at 6ft within his first year. This has been my dream pet since I got into reptiles, so I thought I would share with you all. It's off to a great start and I'm already drawing out a custom cage that opens from the side that I can keep under my bed, so if I want to I can put the bedskirt down and conceal it for when company comes over just in case there are those who are afraid of him. A lock is also a feature that is planned. I don't want people stealing him and keeping my pet confined is also a bonus.
...and yes people do steal large constrictors if they know they're of value. Shame on those who steal people's pets!

10-12 feet! What do you feed them when they are full-grown, rabbits?

Thawed jumbo rats, rabbits or guinea pigs. I plan on sticking with rats, since they're a lot cheaper and they'll do just fine compared to the other options.

Congratulations! Hopefully he stays at 12 foot. All my Retic males hit well over 12 except my dwarves.
Love to see pictures of him too.
And a 12 footer will easily throw down a small rabbit a week.

I'm aware of what they're able to do, though I order from Rodent Pro and their jumbo rats are plenty big and I've made it my goal to have my snakes eat heartily but not so much that they're powerfed or become inanimate sausages. Yeah, I know they're generally lazy to begin with but I've seen too many fat pythons and boas. Now, as for pics! I have one good one I took when I got him, and upon arrival I noticed his heat pack was cold, and he had a stuck shed. Apart from that he appears to be healthy and has already kicked the RI he seems to have had when he came in since I put him under some good heat with an under-tank heater on that same side. It's been two weeks if I remember correctly and he took another mouse this last Sunday. I have to say, I'll probably give LLL Reptile one more try before I switch. He didn't come in terrible condition or have mites but I still wasn't impressed.

Pretty

I wonder if you can inject him with a tracking device

Would be handy if someone stole him, but also if he got out

I've thought about chipping him when he's older, though a tracking device would need batteries- as handy as it would be.

Oh my goodness, he's gorgeous! Such glorious markings. I adore big snakes, and I've always wanted one. I look forward to hearing and seeing more of him!

I love the name

I used to live near someone with a Constrictor when I was a kid. I remember going in their backyard and playing with it (watching it slither, petting it, etc.) My mom has a fear of snakes but i always thought it'd be cool to have one

Congrats

This is making me want to get a Retic instead of a Burm. Ugh. You're killing me.
Personally speaking. I wouldn't give LLL Reptile another shot. I have dealt with them once and that was enough. I know other breeders /keepers who wouldn't touch a reptile from them unless it was a mercy case. The people are nice there. But there are so many other dealers out there I would much rather give my money to.
Ah good old Rodent Pro. They have made so much money off me for so many years. So so many years.

Don't carry it around in your pants. You'd go to jail if you show your trouser snake in public!
