Montrose vets have revealed the smallest victim of the massive five-alarm fire Tuesday is a cat who has survived but will need treatment for weeks.

The cat, now called Phoenix, was brought to Montrose Vet Clinic Wednesday morning after being found in a garage at a townhouse across the street.

She has severe burns with the fur on her body singed down to only a quarter inch and her eyes are badly swollen.

"We don't know if she will be blind," the practice manager at the clinic said of Phoenix, whose name was inspired by her rise from the ashes of the $50 million apartment complex that was destroyed in the fire.

One member of staff said in an email, "She smells of ashes and burnt hair, but she's still purring!"

Vets have received no word on a possible owner for Phoenix, who is potentially a stray that wandered into the wrong place at the wrong time.

"She has no microchip, there is no owner as yet," said the practice manager, who declinded to be named.

The practice said it has never seen a burn case like this, but reports that Phoenix is stable and receiving fluids and pain medication.

"She's very kind, not being aggressive with us at all, she wasn't eating on her own yesterday but today she did, so that's an improvement, although I'm sure she's in pain," the clinic said.

It could be several weeks before Phoenix is ready for a new home, according to vets who will keep her under close watch during her long recovery.

Montrose vet clinic is just two blocks from the fire that tore through the controversial complex at the corner of Montrose and West Dallas Tuesday.

Clinic officials said they feel lucky they didn't have to evacuate their building along with all the animals they were treating.

"We could see the flames but luckily the wind was blowing the other direction," the clinic practice manager said.

The clinic has not asked for donations but anyone who wants to contribute to Phoenix' care is directed to call 713-524-3814.

UPDATE (March 28th): We are glad to report that Phoenix has been fairing very well each day. She has over come a fever, eating and drinking on her own, and has used her litter box successfully! We want to thank everyone who expressed concerns and support for her care. Next step will be to heal her paws with wound management and bandages. We will continue to keep everybody updated.

Phoenix, our little fire survivor, is continuing to make us love her more. We think that the treatments in the hyperbaric oxygen chamber at Gulf Coast Veterinary Specialists helped her healing. Her wounds are progressing - right now they look raw but we can see new hair growing in already. She is seeing well and is smelling things to investigate them. Thank you so much for the happy thoughts, support, and wishes for continued recovery!

Update #1, Apr 23, 2014 :

These are pictures of Phoenix from today - she has a brand new blanket from a new friend. She loved snuggling up in it while she was in the doctors' office and before her treatments. Phoenix is doing really well. Her ears have beautiful clean edges and her feet are starting to show new skin. We want Gulf Coast Veterinary Specialists know that we think of them every day when we see how well she is healing. Thank you all for your kind wishes for our girl and she sends her love out to Russell. She is a purring love bug!

Update #2, Apr 30, 2014:

Our little girl is doing really well. Her feet have beautiful new skin on them, but the bandages were replaced as she still seems very sensitive on them. Her wounds are beginning to contract and she still has a lot of healing to do.
We discovered two things this week - how much she loves little dens and her love for tuna. She was very demanding in asking someone for their lunch that happened to include tuna. These pictures are of her enjoying some salmon from her very own can. She is getting constant love and giving lots of purrs!

She is starting to look better! You can see her fur starting to come in. It's great to see that she's overcoming that traumatic event with her beautiful personality. I hope she finds a really special home once she's all better. Thanks for posting this! ^.^

Phoenix has been thriving over the past two weeks. We have discovered that she is intact as she had displayed signs of being in heat.

We removed her bandages and she has been walking around the office very well. Soon she will see a specialist for the scar tissue contracting over her eye lids.

She has received many gifts over the week and we are so grateful for the support she has received. Phoenix got a beautiful hammock from Sheryl Manos- she curled up in it right away and loves to spend her day watching everyone else working!

Phoenix has been up to a lot in the past three weeks. She went to see Dr. Hempstead- the ophthalmologist at Gulf Coast Veterinary Specialists.

She also got her first bath and we could still smell the smokey smell right after her bath.

She is great with dogs and demands attention! Her hammock is still her favorite place!

Got an update today, and she is doing quite well. She is nearly healed from the fire. Not sure why it was thought she was a Bengal. She looks more like a regular Tabby.
Our little girl Phoenix has been fantastic! She was spayed 2 weeks ago, but unfortunately got an upper respiratory tract infection afterward. She has since recovered and has been super affectionate and social.

We are pleased to announce that Phoenix has found her forever home! Our veterinarian, Dr. Catherine Powell, has welcomed her with open arms and she fits right in to the "Powell Zoo". "Fi Fi" and Dr. Powell's 8 year old daughter bonded instantly, and she is finally learning how fun it can be to be a house cat.

You can continue to follow her story on Facebook at "Phoenix the Cat"

Thank you to everyone's support and kind words! Love, MVC
