At what level do you understand a class

I was having a conversation with my friend regarding level 90 boosts. He doesn't want people who don't know what they are doing when it comes to a class to play a 90. So I got to thinking, at what minimum level do you think the player understands how the class works
I say 40

Hrm, I'm not sure to be honest. It's a constantly evolving understanding, especially when you keep getting new abilities until max level.
It's more organic if you level the class yourself, from 1-90, because you learn as you go and can adapt to the changes and additions.
This is why I'm hesitant about boosting a class that I'm unfamiliar with, I just don't think I'll get a grasp on how to play them without having experienced the leveling process on my own.

I had NO clue what I was doing with my boosted monk. I did a bit of questing to get a feel, and then hopped in LFR to really learn, and no one complained, but I shudder to think of how much I must have sucked at first, lol.

I don't really know about a "set" level at which a class is understood...Leveling up a class is gradually learning about the abilities and rotations as new ones are learned...
As for 90 boosts...well, in the talent tab isn't there that tab that show's the core abilities of the spec? Even the tool tips are quite often laid out as in "use this whenever you can" or "when you have X proc" ...so the ability to understand a class, relies on a persons ability to comprehend what their abilities do and when to use them.

Since you don't get most of your full rotation til usually 87+, I'd say you don't learn your class fully til 90....and by understand, I mean 100%. That's the level you start researching.

yeah id agree with this. I lvled quite a few toons to 85 but theres a steep learning curve from there to 90 I find. I boosted a few toons up from 60 and no clue when i got to 90 what rotation to use. So then it's off to icy viens and ask mr robot lol!! the lower LFR's are great for learning - I did MSV on my boosted enhance shaman and have learnt alot doing those fights and because it isn't SoO no ones judgemental I find.

I don't think you really need to understand your class until endgame. That's when it gets important to know what the hell you are doing

Agreeing with Cow, here! Though I suppose it depends on what you define "understand" as. For me, understanding my class = knowing what abilities to use and when, without having to think about it. And that, for me, only happens once I start raiding! Then, I need to focus on the encounter, so I have to know exactly what abilities to use without thinking.
I pretend I know my pally at 85, but I know as soon as she hits 90 she'll get a few new abilities and everything will change. x.x

Im currently leveling with two friends who I got into the game, we'll call them wolf and lek because thats what they're called.
They're both 62, now, lek has learned his class much faster than wolf has, wolf plays a warlock lek plays a hunter. I dont help one more than the other but the difference is lek has found a youtube channel (SilverLetomi) and she makes WoW parodys, he has learned alot from the lyrics of the songs.
My point is you can learn how to play you class at level 1 but you cant put it all into action until level 90 due to different people doing research and some just playing the game and enjoying it.
Besides, Its been fun playing with those guys, its like having two kids and the higher level they get the more they grow up, when they hit 90 Ill just be like: "You grew up so fast, now heres how you actually play your class." and they'll see all the things they've learn add up over time.

That's what think too. I don't think about that stuff when I'm doing dungeons on my lock right now as she is only level 60 because I don't really need too but at max is when I have too!

It depends on the player really. Some people who are good at the game can take a boosted level 90, just read a little bit about the class on the internet, and end up being a great tank/dps/healer. While others, no matter how many classes they level up from 1 to 90, will just suck and play badly all their life. Even if others tried to tell them the correct rotation, the correct way to gear up (with gems and enchants), it won't change a thing.
That's why I thought it was funny to see people talk about how end game was going to hell due to the boosted 90s, that it would bring tons and tons of players who didn't know how to play their class into LFR, LFD, Scenarios, etc. While at the same time there already was players like that at every expansion's end game since the game came out.

I will never understand why people complain in LFR. The whole point of that is so people can learn how to raid! That's why it's easy!

I never understood why people complain in a video game. It's there for fun! It's not a job, no one's life depends on it. The whole point is people are there to enjoy themselves.
(I'm not criticizing you, Cowmoo, I'm just taking your comment a step further. I AM perplexed at just how seriously some people take a game, something that's supposed to bring you pleasure. And in the end these people who criticize and insist everything be done their way and to "their standards" end up ruining the enjoyment of others.)

Really just depends on the player.
For me personally I'm with some of the others, I don't fully understand the ins and outs of a class unless I level one from 1-90 by hand; which is why my boosted toon is going to be a class that I already know very well-hunter, shammy or shad priest.

Well I boosted a rogue no idea what do to on her I did like 27k dps...
Boosted a moonkin cause I have every other spec and love them so why not did 25k on immerseus rofl but around 60-70k on other bosses.
Boosted a warrior and its my fave boost I'm doing incredible damage for my gear :p
Boosted a healer monk no idea what I should use the most, friend says to just melee and crane for aoe healing not really working for me though + mega oom.
And I think that's it? I don't even remember jeez anyways rogue feels like the worst choice for boost for me but I've never really had one so that's why I did it lol but yeah worst choice I'm so lost.
As for learning the class I can learn quiet fast as I tend to solo dungeons a lot while leveling so I learn what my class is capable of quiet early on.

Don't worry it's not a total loss, you can now open up all those locked boxes you find!
