Flying in WoD

Unread post by AdamSavage »

They haven't come out and said 100% that flying will come out in 6.1, but it's likely going to happen.
We still think a 6.1 patch seems like a pretty reasonable point where flying would become available in Draenor, likely with some kind of aforementioned prerequisite. Maybe it's gold, maybe it's some kind of epic quest, maybe something more straightforward. But we're staying open to changing that post-release if it seems like it's working out really well and we want to keep rolling with it. I'm digging that there seems to be a pretty reasonable mix of beta experiences here though. Definitely looking forward to feedback when we get to the max-level content too.

Mix of beta experiences? Theres only one right now, and thats levellers. We've had no flying while leveling for every Xpac except cata (wrath was partial). That isnt where the "no flying" problems will arise, it will arise when people hit 100 and are moving around Draenor for this and that, something that cant be tested on beta yet. Hope they wait to get the full scope of experience before making a ruling.

I am not kidding, I physically felt anxiety melting from me like a wave when I read that. Gating flying with an early patch isn't unreasonable, it keeps fast levelers from having an even larger advantage over everyone else during the leveling period. (dive bomb ganking, node ninjas, etc). Dread wastes quests got instantly boring when you got flying. Cata should have had this variety of flight-gating.

From this it sounds like they are probably going to gate with 6.1, but are open to grounding us longer. Previous info sounded like they were probably going to perma-ground us, but flight was on the table in case of subscription disaster.

Personally, throughout this whole wave of players/fans going crazy over flying, I knew they wouldn't remove it completely. When you look at past expansions, they've done the same thing. I'm sure they're considering grounding us for a much longer time, but let's be realistic here. They would never completely take out flying.

Seeing as every other expack we have had always grounds us at the start I don't see why they'd not do that in this one too.

The whole 'omg they be taking flying away for everz damn you blizzhorde!" has been nothing but over reaction to something that happens every expack. It's just been people acting like headless chickens.

It's not quite the same though. With every expansion, expect wrath. You could not fly till max level. This time, they are grounding everyone till 6.1. They where not even sure, when they would allow flying in WoD either. This is why so many people freaked out.

Then give feedback, but many people were freaking out to the point of quitting. And when they said that, it was still very early in alpha. Maybe they saw the significance of ground mounts early on and they wanted to see if they could do that with the whole expansion. But everyone was freaking out, making multiple threads about it on the forums. At least they responded on the actual forums, and not spread information on twitter like they've been doing lately. It's fine for things like hunter pets and such, but big things like Capital Cities?

I was happy to read that too! I wouldn't be heartbroken if we were grounded the whole expansion, and we have been for current content areas in the last few patches anyway, but I love flying for its own sake and am glad we'll eventually get to. Once the expansion begins, 6.1 shouldn't feel all that far off. Traditionally the x.1 patches haven't taken all that long to release (or maybe it's just filtered memories ;) )

I do seriously LOVE flying, but was not devastated that they were delaying that for this expansion. But as much as this might sound a bit silly, but with this new news, I was more excited about people being able to fly so I don't have to see silly big broken flying mount flailing about on the ground like they were lame or something.

Seeing people currently on the Beta riding Protodrakes, Cloudserpent and the likes, and having them flop and limp across the plains of Shadowmoon valley, it just looks more than silly imo. I get it, if they were to remove the ability to fly, they'd have to let everyone use any mount or they'd drown in tsunamis of QQ, but it still really ruins the landscape and destroys the immersion factor.

Can't just wait until the expansion drops and during the 1st week, trying to find quest NPC's under a sea of Proto wings and Dragon Butts. :|

Oh god, yeah. The flopping and flailing of flappy mounts used as ground mounts. At least the protodrakes lift up their wings as they go... like old ladies lifting their petticoats to run. The chimaeras seem the strangest to me, like someone trying to use crutches while running at 50 kph.

I sure hope they do allow us to fly in 6.1 then maybe...just maybe I will forgive them for the capital disaster and buy this xpac when 6.1 hits so I don't have to deal with being stuck on the ground all the time. Yes I give love to my ground mounts at times but in Isle of Thunder and Timeless Isle I find myself riding more often then not on a hybrid mount one that can do both like my Swift Windsteed or the Horseman's Reins I hardly use a true ground mount anymore and being stuck forever on one may make me quit cause I am still on the fence if I want to quit or not.

At least so far the WoD zones don't seem to be overflowing with mobs like Isle of Thunder and Timelss Isle are. At times on IoT I see absolutely no point in even using a ground mount since there's so many mobs that jumps at my face that it's better to just run on foot and kill everything to just get through it all.

The thing to remember is that there are eleventy bazillion people crammed onto a couple of beta servers, so there's nearly always someone killing the mobs. On a live server, that'll probably be the case for a while after the expansion hits, but then the zones will quiet down. That'll mean a lot more mobs wandering about waiting to aggro on you as you ride by.

Yeah I like the idea of staying grounded at level 100 in current content for 6 months while waiting for the next patch! agreed just like other expansion too, except it doesn't.
