Private Servers

I keep seeing ppl being on private servers and I wonder if this is allowed. Surely blizz doesn't like this. Your basically stealing there coding to make a server..
A fun place to chat about hunter pets in the World of Warcraft.

Yah it's kinda like the ptr. What do you do ? Make money ? Go mine ? Pointless to earn gold on a ptr really. You get bored there pretty quick. I would fly around to places I couldn't but I'm afraid of getting in trouble with blizz for doing so.Teigan wrote:I thought they were against Blizz policy too. A friend of mine who no longer plays used to play on one, so I tried her's once. Yeah, sure I had 300,000 gold and a phoenix mount and a instant level 80...but..honestly it sucked. I didn't have to earn any of it. Instead of being fun, it was boring. Rather awful, really.
Yes to make one. But how about playing on one that someone else made.Vephriel wrote:No, private servers are considered a breach of the End-User License Agreement. Isn't that the same as banning them ? You got all your toons but your stuck playing on private servers. I'm not a big risk taker either way. If I where to do it I would do it on a safe computer that I've never logged in to my real account and on a different IP. However that's alot of hassle and I don't think it's worth it.Vephriel wrote:"Blizzard has not yet banned any users who connect to these servers, but in some cases, the users of private servers no longer have official server accounts. "
It's going to be frowned upon no matter what. It's your risk.
I thought I was clear ? I'm pretty sure I said It wasn't worth the risk. I was already iffy about it and after reading the post in here I made my mind up that I wouldn't."I'm not big risk taker" and " I don't think it's worth the hassle" Sounded like like I was saying I wasn't gonna do it. *shurgs*Vephriel wrote:I really don't know what you're looking for in this thread. If it's some sort of reassurance for breaking the terms of agreement you won't find it here. Risk whatever you do or don't want to. There really isn't a grey area here.
Couldn't of asked for a better response. Clear and right to the point. I think if I gotten very clear answer then this thread would of been smaller. On the flip side it boosted my post count.Mania wrote:A lot of players don't really know what a private server is or whether playing on one is allowed. Having a clear answer is probably useful. So here you go:
No, private servers are not allowed. Running one most certainly breaks the Terms of Use (and could get you sued). But even just playing on one breaks the Terms of Use -- specifically clause 2F, although you could make a case for clauses 2D and 2E as well.
Now if you see someone asking here you can point them at this thread.
I don't understand what about Veph's initial answer wasn't "clear and right to the point."AdamSavage wrote:Couldn't of asked for a better response. Clear and right to the point. I think if I gotten very clear answer then this thread would of been smaller.
Either way, private realms are NOT worth the risk IMO. Furthermore, private realms are often riddles with bugs and lag issues and they're usually a few patches behind the main game. Of course nobody will ban you for game breaking hacks like underground mining, so if that's your thing I'm sure the private realms are a haven. *shrug* Personally I like Blizz's game the way it is.Vephriel wrote:No, private servers are considered a breach of the End-User License Agreement.
