I think that's what they're leaning toward (I feel like we had a thread on this subject a while ago actually haha), but I can't help seeing them as something more akin to a rhino or one of those prehistoric horned mammals.

I suppose they don't have to be either since they're a fictional creature, but it is easier to see the reptilian/dino like traits on the newer mount.

No, it's clearly wearing scale mail armour
It does seem to be the way they're going with this. Like Veph I always thought of them as akin to rhinos or at least early mammal-like reptiles. They've never been scaly like this before.

Armadillos have scales, and they're mammals.
So do pangolins.
Many dinosaurs had scaly skin, and they were warm-blooded. They were also not reptiles, but bird-like.
Just sayin'.

Yups, there are many mammals that have pattern/segmented/scale like patterns to their skin that are not reptilian.
Elephant hide.
Rhino Hide

I'd lump them in with Rhinos and Elephants and what not as well.

To me, they're like one of those dinosaurs. You know...like a stegosaurus, just minus a few key features. I do see Kodos as some kind of lizard/dinosaur hybrid. They lumber as they walk, something the herbivores of the Jurassic world would do as they plodded along.
I must say, pangolins are adorable. I'd rather ride a giant one of those than a Kodo, I will be honest there.

then again, as pointed out, a Kodo could well be a scaly-looking mammal. Imagine a Kodo egg. The sheer size of it.

Yeah, it's just the old kodo skin looks VERY much like elephant hide, but the new model's scales look more like, say, a snake. Very non-mammalian.

Perhaps it's a mammal-like reptile like a
Therapsid.
