THIS THREAD HAS SOME SPOILERS SO IF YOU DON'T WANT TO BE SPOILED ON STORY, DON'T GO FURTHER!
Alright. At this point, spoilers are okay. No turning back....

Without the additional context of the Broken Shore cinematics, it is hard to know what actually happens. Further, datamined text suggests that he may still be alive and just faked his death.

I'm torn either way. Faking his death *again* would be a really terrible and predictable repetition of a plot device.
But killing him off for real right now, immediately after Varian and leaving the Horde leadership in doubt again, so soon after Garrosh, I think would be another really tiresome plot device.
Maybe the writers have been watching a lot of Game of Thrones. Maybe we'll also start seeing major characters in full frontal nudity scenes. ;p
I guess we have to wait and see what's really going on here.

I barely play horde, and I like him better than Varian. Maybe that's because I knew first knew him from playing WC3, and Varian's backstory is some goofy plot that we didn't get to experience. Just "Missing Diplomat" to "surprise he's his own magical twin and back as king" shenanigans.
Remember Voljin's a shadow hunter. If he's not faking his death again, he may be taking the opportunity to go to the spirit world and recruit loa. Eventually there will be more Zandalari conflict, and if he hasn't shown up by then, there's a chance he'll be back as a friendly loa, like Zanza. "Death be a doorway, an' time a window; He'll be back!"

Poor Vol'jin, doesn't even get the respect he deserves in death. Trolls, including Darkspear, don't burn their dead, they mummify them!

Oh yeah, sufficiently powerful troll spirits can jump around to new bodies, can't they? I admit I lost track of which troll antagonist was in what body by the end of Cata and Pandaria. Maybe Vol'jin just wants a sexy new body.

There's a missing cutscene that takes place in the Warchief throne room when he makes Sylvanas the new Warchief, it is very likely that he's not actually dead. It was mentioned a few times before that Vol'jin will seek "an old friend" to get help against the Legion, which we've seen no signs of yet in-game on alpha. Burning a body on the pyre just makes it impossible for anyone to identify the body and figure out that it's not actually Vol'jin in that pyre. It seems weird that in an expansion where they're going all out with tying up loose ends and giving us things that we've never seen in-game before (Emerald Dream, Underground Karazhan, Below Tirisfal Glades, etc) that they'd get rid of possibly the only remaining connection to one of the few remaining undiscovered locations - Zandalar. The Horde does, afterall, need an equivalent of Jaina in terms of "recruiting" an army. Jaina = Kul Tiras, Vol'jin = Zandalari Tribe.
TLDR - He's not dead.
Well...there's some hope that is the case!

If that's true then it would address most of my concerns about this plot direction.
But it still seems like he'll develop a reputation for faking his own death. Next time everyone will want to see a body and stick their own knife in just to be sure

I bet he is either 'die' to travel to get help from the spirits or the Shadowlands or he is faking his death again to get the help of dinomancers of Zandalari.
I bet Jaina too would lead Kul Tiras to aid the Alliance.
