I was wondering, are there good and bad types of pets?

for example, are cats better then wolves?

Bad hunter pets were pretty much anything with mana. Caster pets weren't really very good at all.

Cats were pretty good. I think the best cat pet you could get was Brokentooth, which was a rarespawn in Hillsbrad. Takk the leaper was a really good raptor pet, another rarespawn. The ZG bats were pretty crazy with attack speed, as was another pet that I'm blanking on the name on.

Are you talking about pets for Classic? If so, as Bowno mentioned, any pets with caster bars are pretty bad. We have a full list of them here:

I do remember cats were one of the better dps families. I had a cat for dps and a boar for tankiness.

I think boars supremeness came later? Wolf was THE dps pet due to howl? And Takk the rare raptor was the best pvp pet due to chase speed? He ran faster than epic mounts! !
Bats were good pvp pets too i think. .specially the zg Bats. .they ate mages for luch! !

Lupos is a good option for endgame pet.

I am not sure, what is the best pet here. But, as for me, the cats are very effective.
