I've had good luck with carrion birds, pretty balanced pet, stat wise. Owls usually look good. But both sometimes have the "I'll hide it from you" issue which is only a problem in confined spaces. Scorpids are uncommon and wind serpents are rarely seen, but you'll either love them or hate them, no middle ground. Striders seem too be good pets as well.

hmmm dwarf you say... Dwarves and Boars always go well together.

As for not liking carrion birds, if it had too do with the way they seem too block you view, owls sadly have the same problem. If that's not it, then owls are worth trying out. Different abilities and they look nicer.

Wind Serpents are the best solo-pets I've had, until at level 40 or so when you can specc Tenacity in Guard Dog and Thunderstomp. Their ranged let's them get aggro quickly, and it's low focus cost and be fact that it mitigates armor makes it an overall great pet.

Well, I still believe a dwarf should have a bear, even if I dunno why, and, coming from Dun Morogh, it should be a polar bear!

No, honestly, I did use the white bear when I found out, there wa a tameable on on level 11 but then, a dwarf with a crocilisk at his side seemed so much cooler. I just don't like a fluttering bird at my side, so owl or whatever were never an option for any hunter of mine.

If you want a pet that will do great damage get a Raptor. They are currently the highest dps pets for BM Hunters, closely followed by the Devilsaurs and Wolves. If you're not BM, then a Wolf is your best bet. Having a trusty dog at your side is pretty nice. You really don't need a tenacity pet to level and quest with. I never used one.

Raptors are not top DPS as far as I know. And I doubt that they're top DPS for BM, they get Devilsaurs, Bear-Kitteh and normal cats should still be higher than Raptors.

I'm not sure how they stack up performance-wise, but you rarely see serpents as pets anymore. Their ranged attack is useful for grabbing mobs, kind of like the aforementioned wind serpent. I was always a big fan of the green/white variety. :) The last time I had one, I named him Jörmungandr, at the advice of a friend. And for the record, this was BEFORE WotLK came out with their jormungar! (Jörmungandr was, as I recall, the Midgard serpent who grew so large he encircled the world, and was the spawn of Loki and a giantess whose name I cannot remember...)

Also, you see a few of them around, but wasps and fireflies are pretty snappy pets. I have one of the big blue wasps from Sholazar, and I named her Maya, after the cartoon, Maya the Bee. And if you go for the firefly, it might be kind of cliché, but I'd name it Serenity. :D

I've been using a Serpent myself on my new Petopians hunter, and I've been having a lot of fun with him so far. :D I bring him to most of my random dungeons and he performs well, and he can definitely be used for solo-questing (though not as efficient as a Tenacity pet, of course)

I'd never tamed a Serpent before, but I'm glad I did as they seem quite rare as a Hunter pet. I often get comments about him for that reason alone.

you cant go wrong with any pet and on my server wolves are uber popular so i use a raptor and pretty much every other type of pet is rarely seen with the exception of spirit beasts

You don't see many people use crocolisks, almost ever...

And scorpids even. They hardly ever get used, even though they are one of my favorite families.

Quazecoatl or something. :P Quasicoatal? Quasitotal? They're misspellings. :D

You can also try Gungnir, which is the Norse god Odin's spear.
