New Character Naming Suggestions

If any of you are like me, you’ll be getting ready to roll some new toons for the dawn of Cataclysm! For those struggling with naming I wanted to help out with some of my own strategies. There are twelve characters (letters) to play with, so plenty of leeway for creativity!
I’ve made toons purely because I thought up a good name, these are my stratagies, but please help others with yours!

In-game Theme:
There are thousands of NPC’s and named locations that work great for character names, sites like wowhead.com have complete listing of NPC’s and Zones. Some variation will be required, but usually you can find some inspiration.

Example:
-Killsarkoth named after one of the bosses in the Troll/Orc starting area (Sarkoth the scorpid)
-Murlocchow, fairly obvious where that one comes from :P

Your Favourite…:
This can be food, animal, TV series, movie, book, town, you name it!

Example:
-Angua, a character from my favourite Author; Terry Prattchet.

Phrases:
Here is where you’ll have to get really creative, find a short phrase or expression and try to make it fit.

Example:
-Abitsquirrly, this one was easy, all I had to do was drop an E, and voila Abi T. Squirrly gnome extraordinaire!
-Eatandbmerry, from the phrase “eat, drink and be merry” I simply dropped “drink” and an E, a perfect name for an Undead.
-Necesaryevil, another easy one, I just dropped the extra S.

Descriptive Words:
Self explanatory, like the phrases, you just pick a word that describes your character, or the image you want to project.

Example:
-Erradikate, I had to play around a little bit, but it still looks good, too bad I went Resto :P
-Saviour, going to be a Worgen Druid when Cata hits, atm he’s a Resto Shammy gathering dust.

Mythology:
Mythology is a great resource for name ideas, don’t just look at the heroes, sometimes the side characters have great names too.

Example:
-Lycia; it is a town in the myth of the Chimera, and is actually a compromise for me, the Chimera is my favourite mythological creature, but the name is always taken.

Languages:
Along the same lines as Descriptive Words, but with more flexibility, if the name you want in one language is already taken you can search for it in another! Translator sites are common enough; I believe Google has a version.

Example:
-Ossa; it means bones in Latin, a pretty name for a pretty corpse :D

Humor:
Be careful with this one, you don’t want to go too silly; otherwise you might not get taken seriously.

Example:
-Ewedied, if I PVP’d I’d use this name, I think it’s great, but it’s wasted on me ;)
-Cheekydevil, IMO a great warlock name.
-Cellardwellr, had to drop the E, but it still works.

Advertising:
I don’t sell my services often, but it would make things easier if you could just look at some ones name and know if they’re the sort who openly sell, and can be approached.

Example:
-I really like the idea of using lnc, the small L in the Warcraft font looks like a capital I, so something like Rubieslnc for a Jewelcrafter or Plustwolnc (as in +2 <insert stat here>, I felt I had to explain that one), Essencelnc/Enchanterlnc, etc
-Putting your preferred role in your name; Ihealforgold, etc, also, it’s pretty easy to tack DPS on to a short name.

Name Themes:
Basically this is for when you don’t want any confusion as to who you are. One of my Guild Leaders does this; almost all of his toons have Bruce in them that way you always know it’s him on.

Hunter and Pet Themes:
Most of my Hunters go by this strategy, first browse your options on Petopia (where else would you go? :P) and find a pet/pet family/look etc., that interests you, and come up with something which goes well with that scheme. Also, is there a name you really, really want, but it's taken? Pets are also a way to get the name you want, just give your Hunter a name which compliments the name of your future pet.

Example:
-Shimmerwing is my all Moths Hunter, she even has moth vanity pets.
-Rabidpenguin is birds and Polar Bears :P
-Meadowhawk is all about the birds!
-Killsarkoth (mentioned earlier) has a Scorpid; SonofSarkoth
-Datcord; I wanted the name Discord, of course it’s “Unavailable” so I made the Troll Hunter Datcord (sounds vaguely Troll’ish) and named my pet Discord.

My character names to date:

Ðane - Orc Death Knight. The "Ð" is intentional just because I like the look of it better than a plain D, even though I've been told that in Icelandic, it's pronounced "th" as in "them".

Bloodoath - Orc Warlock. I think this name/class combo speaks for itself really. It speaks to the very nature of summoning demons and using dark magics without being corny or goofy.

Telerie - Blood Elf Hunter. I got this name from a book of Celtic names I have. It just seemed to be a good female name to go with a race and class that uses grace and wit to accomplish it's goals.

Lockjaw - Troll Mage. This name was in honor of a named crocodile I used to fight back in Everquest. No other reason besides that.

Ragingbull - Reserved for my Tauren Paladin or Warrior. I'm waiting for Cata to come out before I decide which class I'd rather be since everything is changing, but I like the name Ragingbull because it kind of has a Native American feel to it, and it goes well with a melee class.

Swampfever - Reserved for my Troll Druid. I used this name back in Everquest for my Troll Beastlord (along with the surname "Pete"), so I thought I'd use it again when Troll Druids become available.

Sparks - Reserved for my Goblin Shaman. I like this name because 1) it suits a Goblin nicely 2) it's pretty accurate for Shamen that play with fire and 3) it'll fit perfectly with Goblin Engineering.

Sigrah - Reserved just because it was my main character's name in Everquest (Vah Shir Beastlord). Unfortunately, I haven't found a race/class combo I want to use it with in WoW, though Worgen might have potential. Still, I keep it reserved on my server because I'm selfish and don't want anyone else to use it.

I like it when people have a reasoning for their names, it gives so much more depth to the bunch of pixels on the screen :P

I love those ideas!

Name: Rottingham
-came from me thinking of "Hunter? robinhood! robinhood as a dwarf? Sherif of Nottingham! A dwarf named Nottingham? Rottingham!" :D

Name: Twinkmiser
-came from a combination of twink and heat/snow miser from those old xmas movies :P THey had catchy songs <.<

Name: Wight
-A wight is a member of the undead, so what better name to give to a DK?

Name: Maagico
-Name from my magician in EQ ^-^ THe old one, not the second one

Name: Sneedly
-My dad told scary stories when I was younger about an evil puppeteer named Mr. Sneedly. Was gunna name my Warlock Mrsneedly, but then I thought everyone would think it was Mrs. Needly, so Sneedly worked better XD

Firewing: No reason. First hunter, I just thought it sounded neat.

Azunara: I got the name Azuna from a web comic. Azuna was a nether drake, and I liked the name. It was taken, so I added a 'ra'. Problem solved, it stuck.

Kieryon: Again. No reason. A lot of my names are thought up on the spot.

Ravynira: Raven with 'ira' added.

Tykell: Name from a book I read. Reserved for worgen, Tykell was a wolf in the story.

Kefira: supposedly means lioness. I liked it.

Xeyvron: Another on the spot name.

Saturo: A little modification of my RL name, which I used on MSN really long ago, but the name stuck.
Stereoptic: Double-Vision. Thought it sounded kind of cool. Thought up on the spot.
Ovaktalo: Means "Warcraft" in Taurahe. It's one of the constant words, it always translates the same. Name is funny, because he's actually resto and a calm individual in the fanfic I wrote a while ago.
Kinetik: Mispelling of Kinetic.
Taelnazir: A modification of a fanfic dragon a member of my old guild thought up. Taelenazr, which I modified since he took the real name before I had a chance to.
Nemilon: I just think it sounds kind of cool. It's also similar to the swedish pronounciation of a small rodent.

I always knew about WoWArmory, but I didn't know you could use it to check on names. I've been playing around on it, and now I know servers to avoid if I really, really want a name, would've saved me time when I tried one Server after another to get the name I wanted! Already used it to check to see if I can use a name (I want my boyfriend to make a "mate" for one of my current toons, so now I know it's probably available.)

Thanks to Azunara :D

Keep in mind that only characters that are Level 10 or above will show up on the armory, so a name *may* still be taken even if it doesn't show up.

Luperca: Latin, means "wolf mother" seemed fitting for an orc hunteress
Zulfiqar: Arabic, means "cleaver of the spine" for my DK, also the name of a type of sword I think
Witherfang: my druid, she's a tree/cat, also the name of the wolf spirit in the game Dragon Age: Origins
Asena: Turkish, its the name of a girl in a story, she is raised by wolves and has shamanistic powers, so that's the name of my orc shaman
Glowyrm:my troll priest, just because it sounds cute

Nice, I like Luperca :)

Since WoW no longer offers a random name generator, and you're looking for a name with no attachments (you want something to give your own meaning to) http://dicelog.com/yafnagen offers a random name generator where you can restrict the number of characters it generates. There are numerous other sites which boast a random name generator as well.

My main called Craggy picked from a druid name generator (none wow generator)

Ricochet is my hunter, at the time he had a rifle, shortly after renaming I got a bow to drop.

Pestilent is my female DK sounded cool for unholy spec, sadly now only have frost and blood spec.

Rolandd is my paladin he's named after the bad guy in the film Jumper.

Poobah is my shammy named by my son, no idea why.

Also got Shinkicker reserved for cata when a make a goblin warrior.

My UD hunter will be Sicatrise and the poor worgen I create and never play will be Talbot with the extended character A. Already have these names sitting in my bank of toons.

Just wanted to say; don't dismiss a name out of hand because you think it'll be taken. It doesn’t hurt to try, I’ve made many characters with names I was sure would be taken, and weren’t!

Well, with my main, Donachan, the thought process was... interesting.

Basically, I made her before I named her, and she hand the donkey-ish horns.

It went like this:
Donkey-> Donkey Kong -> Not naming her that, shorten -> Not Don, that' a guy's name-> add an "a"-> Dona is boring-> Donkey Kong was made in Japan, add something to it that references the culture.

I looked it up and added "-chan". Unfortunately, Japanese culture seems to be quite a fad, and I often get weird comments about her name. Didn't know this was the case when I named her, but oh well.

Aeladrine was a bit more simple, as was Aiada.
With Aiada, I heard a name similar to it on a commercial, and it ended up twisted in my head to become what it is. Unfortunately, her name is rather common.

Aeladrine is the only one on any server above level ten with her name. I made it by... mashing keys together. I name a lot of characters this way, just putting random letters together in a way I like. I first ended p with Aeladri, but added the -ne because it sounded better.

Not really interesting stories, and they don't really have meanings behind them.

With Names:
This category is inspired by a young Tauren Hunter I once saw, his name was Burger, and his pet; WithFries! This is a fun one IMO, pick an incomplete name, and then give your pets names which finish off your toons name, food seems to lend itself very well to this theme. Think of the Autocomplete feature on Google :P

Example:

________________/TheBulls
________________/TheDevil
Runningwith______-Knives
________________\Scissors
________________\Wolves
Or

________/Away
Run_____-Amok
________\ningScared

Or you can pick your names to go with the way they are displayed on your pet’s nameplate:

_____Ham
<Sandwich’s pet>

__Peanutbutter
<Sandwich’s pet>

____Cheese
<Sandwich’s pet>

Alliance:
Giordana - I'm a avid road cycling fan and road cyclist myself and there is Italian gear made by a company called Giordana. I just really love the gear and name.

Jobiensis - Nelf huntress. The scientific latin name for a favorite monitor lizard species

Kimama - Human mage. American Indian name for butterfly. Just thought it was cute

Aggrona - This is my new little gnome rogue. Not sure how I came up with it but wanted something fierce sounding for my little stealth ankle biter

Horde:
Rexiah - Originally the name was Rexia which was a random name given by the character creation. Originally orc huntress and on bloodhoof server but then change to a troll huntress and nesingwary. But there was already a Rexia on there so I added the H because I really loved the name.

Zarilira - Another random name generation from character creation but again really loved this one. It's on my belf huntress.
