Heartbroken

My son has been getting sick all winter - I think we're on ear infection number 10 right now. It's been crazy and the doctors were threatening surgery if things don't get better. Well, he turned two so we were able to bring him to be tested for allergies. Sure enough, he's allergic to our cats. Although it's possible to medicate so that you get over your allergies (a costly treatment that takes a couple of years, from what I understand) he's too young for it, so our only option was to get rid of the cats.
I've been calling shelters for a couple of weeks now, all the no-kill shelters are full cause our stupid city has a set date for lease turn-over and everyone that can't bring their cats just seem to abandon them (don't even get me started on that!!!). One shelter said they had 250 cats right now. @_@
I finally talked to our vet, and they agreed to see if they can find a home for our youngest cat - she's only three, super cute and oh so loving, so she stands a good chance of being adopted. However, they said that our old cat, all set in her ways and past her cute years, would not find a home and the whole process would be too traumatic for her... so we had to put her down.
I'm so heartbroken right now.

I love my babies so much, and I just didn't have a choice. It's so unfair.
This is beautiful Smokie:
This is my old baby, Cookie:

She traveled back to Canada with us from Denmark, and she's been through a hell of a lot on her life. Rest in peace, my lovely.

Oh my, that's so sad!!! I can imagine how you must feel right now. But rest assured you are a great mother. Children should always come first, in my opinion. I hope Smokie finds a good, loving home. And RIP Cookie.

Oh Sara, I just want to cry for you. That is so sad, especially for your older kitty.

(((Big hugs))) I wish I could help in some way. I think both cats are equally cute. I'm so sorry for your losses.

Thank you guys. You never remember how much it hurts to loose a pet until it happens again.

And thank you Rhy. I know I made the right decision, but that just doesn't make it hurt any less, you know?
To make matters worse, we had to keep Marcus home today (another ear infection

) and he was up when they picked them up. He was heart broken, calling out their names and crying.
I'm certain Smokie will find a good home, she's such a loving cat and so cute. People will see her and just fawn over her. I hope. *sigh*

Your story just breaks my heart... It really truely does, its sad that so many irresponsible pet owners well your right I wont get started on that topic or I'll rant. Anyways if I could have helped in any way I would have.. I would have taken them for you, if I could

I love all animals but cats especially and it makes me think what would happen if I ever had to get rid of my Momo. I used to be allergic to all animals but I just grew out of it and now own 3 cats and 2 dogs. Hopefully this will turn out to be your sons case but until then may Smokie get a good home and R.I.P Cookie

I'm so so sorry. RIP little Cookie, godspeed kitty.
Good luck to Smokie. I have no doubts a great home will be found.
I'm terribly sorry for your losses. Condolences and prayers to you and family.

How terrible. Many many hugs and prayers toward your family. Hopefully little Marcus will get better soon, and that Smokie will find a loving home. I haven't had to go through the experience of putting a pet down yet, and I can't imagine how painful that must have been for you... I'm sure Cookie's fuzzy little angel is looking over you guys. <3
You're in my thoughts.

I'm not much of a cat person, but I must say that Smokie has beautiful green eyes, and Cookie's face had me cracking up! soo serious looking!

Thanks.

I hope you're right Nevar, I'd love to be able to have cats in the future. Otherwise, we might even try that treatment once he's old enough.
It's really hard to wrap my mind around it, I keep expecting to see them. You're right, Rottie, Cookie was a serious one. She'd have all these wonderful photo-op poses until you snapped a photo of her. Always turned her head at the last second or turned away or whatever. *sigh* Great kitty, she was.

And dont forget how much she loved you Sara <3

- Think of it this way if she was old she was spared a lot of stress and uneeded anxiety in the long run.

Thank you. It really means a lot to me. In some way, sharing this with you guys has been very cathartic. I'm probably never going to stop feeling guilty about the way things happened, but I know my son is healthier, and hearing both sympathies and agreement from you guys really, really means a lot.
