Really? A 24 hour patch?

What is with all of the really long patches? I know the last one was Real ID,(has been very annoying for the most part, even with my rl friends) but what is this one for? My friend told me it was 24 hours, he forgot to mention what it is down for. Anyone know if we will start seeing the Cataclysm changing the areas soon?

I wouldn't be surprised. With the amount of new information they have to apply before Cataclysm, it's just unavoidable to have a large period of downtime.

On the bright side they're not doing every server at the same time, so at least you can fiddle around on some other realm to alleviate boredom while it occurs.

hardware upgrades, software upgrades, all kinds of stuff it could be. That's a lot of servers to manage.

They did it last week on my main server... and was down several hours after teh 24 hour run. They had some problems with it.

Both of my servers just went down 6 minutes ago. 24 hours is going to be a LONG time. Maybe I'll create a new toon on Nesingwary.

The extended downtime is to prepare the servers for the addition of Cataclysm data, basically, to prep them for the integration of the expansion. A batch of servers were down for 24 hours a couple of weeks ago for this purpose.

Same thing they did for Wrath. Update the servers, put the cataclysm files into the game, just locked...etc.

It's not really a 24-hour patch. It's a 24 hour downtime for some servers, but the patch has most likely been deployed already. The downtime is to work on server maintenance, as Anansi said.
