Need help finding a book title.

The book I'm trying to find was a fantasy type thing I found at the library.
It was about this young man who lived in a city ran by a council of elder mages. His dad was one of the elders and they had very strict rules that governed how the magic was used, how the citizens lived and how the outlaying lands were used and farmed. The reason that everything was so strict was because a few hundred years ago they used to fight demons. They beat the demons back and created their city for the defense of their nation. This boy attended the school for young mages and he wasn't doing very well. He felt like there should be more to life and his dad was very oppressive of him.
One day he found books that were about 'wild magic'. Wild magic was a huge no no and every mage in training was taught that that kind of magic was what brought the demons on them in the first place. So the boy, being rebellious, started to learn what he could of this wild magic. He didn't believe that is was dangerous. He learned wild magic made you pay a price to keep everything in balance. He was found out and exiled from the city to die in the wilds. He found a unicorn with his wild magic and the creature helped him live.
Meanwhile it gives the perspective of the demons, you find out that they are actually still around. They manipulate the city and people who use magic into believing they are safe and to root out all wild magic users. Something about the combined efforts of ordered magic and the wild magic was extremely potent in combating them.
Now...I started reading this book about 6 or 7 years ago and I think I got into the second one but before I could finish it the backpack that it was in was stolen. I've just recently started rereading all the old books I've collected and remembered that I never finished that series. I'm a bit OCD about finishing story lines so now its really bugging me that I can't remember this ones title or author. I've scoured my library for it but I don't think they purchased another copy with the money I had to pay them for the stolen one.
None of the used book store employees know of this book nor the librarians. They don't keep records of checked out books either. If anyone knows the title of this book or knows of a website I can go look at please let me know!
