as always, I'm trying to read too many books at once:
Dawidziak's Mystery of Mysteries "the death and life of Edgar Allan Poe", biography
Jones' Howl's Moving Castle, which inspired Miyazaki's anime
Anderson's Paul of Dune--wasn't going to read this one, but parts of it may end up in the third Dune film? (takes place btwn Dune and Dune Messiah)
Nayler's Mountain in the Sea, award-winning novel about an intelligent octopus community

Just finished Spufford's Cahokia Jazz--alt history of the USA with a Native American city and state on the Mississippi river *recommended

I just finished reading the four stories (2 novellas, 1 short story, and a novel) by P. Djeli Clark, set in what is informally known as the "Dead Djinn Universe". He's a brilliant writer, creating very original urban kinda-steampunk-adjacent fantasy.

The books are set in an alternate Cairo at the start of the 20th century. 50 years prior to the story, an event happened that weakened the gap between magical realms and ours, resulting in Djinn and other supernatural beings crossing into our world, and Egypt becoming an advanced and progressive early 20th century power with the aid of migrating djinn. The stories are centred on an agency that investigates problems and magical and alchemical nature, in particular one young female agent who is something of an eccentric and thoroughly enjoyable main character. If you're after speculative fiction that has a focus outside of Europe and North America, chiefly on north African customs and myths, as well as having queer themes, this is a brilliant series.

In order, the stories and novel are: 'A Dead Djinn in Cairo' (short story), 'The Angel of Khan el-Khalili' (short story available online, here), 'The Haunting of Tram Car 015' (novella), and 'A Master of Djinn' (his first novel).

I'm now reading 'The Saint of Bright Doors' by Vajra Chandrasekera. It's so far altogether unique and wonderful.

Right now, I’m reading "Project Hail Mary" by Andy Weir, and I’m loving it. If you enjoyed "The Martian," you’ll probably dig this too. It’s got that great mix of humor and science that keeps you hooked.

"Hidden Legacy is set in the world much like our own, where over a hundred years ago several countries developed Osiris Serum, a solution that awakened one’s latent magical powers. They gave that serum to everybody willing to risk dying from it. Eventually they figured out that giving humans ability to spit fire and summon monsters wasn’t such a good thing, but by that point it was too late. The magical powers turned out to be hereditary.

Now the world is ruled by magical dynasties, powerful Houses, who marry for magic, maintain private armies, and own global corporations. Imagine the aristocratic families like Medici or Tudors, but in addition to being ruthless and cunning, they can now create a tornado or breathe life into a sculpture and use it to pummel their enemies.

In this world, in the city of Houston, lives the Baylor family. Three sisters, Nevada, Catalina, Arabella, their two cousins adopted into the family, Bernard and Leon, their veteran mother Penelope and their Grandma Frida. Together they run Baylor Investigative Agency, except for Grandma Frida who has her own business fixing mobile artillery for the Houston’s magical elite. The Hidden Legacy chronicles their lives, relationship, and adventures."

Author :Ilona Andrews
Books in order:
Burn For Me (Nevada´s historie)
White Hot (Nevada´s historie)
Wildfire (Nevada´s historie)
Diamond Fire (Catalina´s historie)
Sapphire Flames (Catalina´s historie)
Emerald Blaze (Catalina´s historie)
Ruby Fever (Catalina´s historie)
A Misunderstanding (Arabella)
The Cool aunt (Arabella)

also read this
"All Áine wants for her 22nd birthday is a night out in New York City with her normal, human friends. But when her roommate stumbles into oncoming traffic, Áine breaks the bind on her extraordinary, witch-born power to save her. With Áine’s magick now freed, her world shifts, and the voice of a male witch commands her to run."
there are more to the story but it would be spoilers to post more.

author: Maggie Sunseri
Books in order:
The Discovered
The Coveted
The Illuminated
The Hunted
The Scorned
The Claimed
The Redeemed

some books are 4 stars, some 3 and some 5 but worth reading :headbang:

and last recommendation for today are these 3 books

"I’m a killer. He’s a bounty hunter. A match made in Hell. Literally.

Waking up at the foot of your own grave is no picnic… especially when you can’t remember how you got there.

A year ago, I was a college senior still living with my parents. Now? I’m the boogeyman of Ascension, TN, snapping up rogues and draining them dry.

That is until I’m ensnared by a mysterious bounty hunter whose blood and body I crave.

We’ll likely kill each other once it’s all said and done, but until then, he’s bound to keep me on the straight and narrow.

Unless I can convince him to follow me to the dark side"
Author: Annie Anderson
Book order:
Night Watch
Death Watch
Grave Watch

Wain: I enjoyed A Master of Djinn and (thanks to you) the angel short story! And I've heard good things about The Saint of Bright Doors, will add it to my list.
Kawe: I've read both those Weir novels and liked them both, especially the main relationship in Project Hail Mary.
Ana: I read Andrew's Magic Bites and enjoyed it and also read the first novel of the Hidden Legacy series. It was fun reading a book set in my home town, but ultimately it wasn't my cup of tea--I'm just not a fan of the enemies to lovers trope.

I recently finished Mieville's Book of Elsewhere, based on Keanu Reeve's series of BRZRKR graphic novels. I haven't read those, and from what I've heard, I don't think fans of the comics would necessarily like the novel. I found it interesting, but I wouldn't recommend to any one except die-hard Mieville fans like me :)

Currently reading Jane Eyre! I'm familiar with the plot and think I at least read some excerpts in school, but reading it now I'm thinking I never read it all the way through back then. I've even read Rhys' Wide Sargasso Sea already :)

Book club -wise, we just read Kingfisher's House with Good Bones in honor of Halloween: mild horror story with an entomologist main character who I adore! This month's book is Nicola Griffith's Spear, a novella retelling the Arthurian legend of Percival. Recommend, like I do all of her works!

Gormanghaste - heh i really didn´t notice the trophe. For me it´s more of a fantasy book with some romantic elements - but yeah now i kinda see it. still think they very good ;)

Started Jennifer L. Armentrout "From Blood and Ash" almost done and ready for book 2 soon. Really like it.

I almost almost want some romance in my books

I tried getting into Jane Eyre and also wuthering heights but i never been able to finish them
