Has your name been stolen?

Actually went on this rant in another topic but I'm just curious if y'all feel it's wrong too or I'm just nuts. I have a lvl 80 troll priest on Llane named Pennywise. About two weeks ago a friend whispers me to tell me about another priest named Penywise. This kinda ticked me off cause the class is the same and the names are too close. I figure if he stinks or is a jackass that I'll get some of the heat for it. Like if he sucks, when I try to get into a group people will say "Oh I've run with him and he's horrible." Even though it's not me, I'll lose out. So what do you think? Am I nuts or is this like a real problem? On a good note, all my friends refer to him as "Fake Penny" in trade chat when he's on.

On my server, there was someone in my guild called Raven, there was also some troll named Räven. Our Raven ended up changing her name because in general, people out there don't know how to read properly and confused her with the troll.

I guess its certainly possible, but not always a certain thing

There was a guy who named his character Saturó, and then someone else named Satüro. I wouldn't call it theft, but if they try to spread bad rep...

Imitation is the greatest flattery.

I have to say, I'm one of those "name stealers" to some extent, as I use accented characters sometimes.

The point is though that I just like the name, I don't purposefully see a character's name and imitate it, I always think up my character names out of game.

And as much as I myself have problems with paranoia, names like Raven and etc [tho Saturo is a name I've not heard of myself until coming to Petopia], are common names that everyone would probably want. Hell 'Caim' has a lil o above the A because 'Caim' was already taken. Same with Strawberry, lil o above the A. It's not about 'Imitation' it's about the fact 'Names are taken and you have to use something else or use an alt code for them'. I mean I was lucky 'Rosalyn' wasn't taken on Hellscream, but it's taken elsewhere. And it's the exact same as Rozaleen, Rozalyn, Rosalen, etc etc.

It's no different than IRL <_>

I know someone that changed his name because some noob had almost the same name and same classe has him.
The noob did very low dps, wiped raids,...
Afther some time alot people thought it was the same persone.Because of that my friend didnt found any group for raid, not even for a hc.

So basically he was forced to change his name.

I tend to think that if you need to use a special character in a name or spell it differently than is proper, choose a different name because the one you want is already taken. Just deal with the fact that someone beat you to it and choose a different name, it's not like there are shortages out there.

Allowing special characters on names was such a big mistake.

Seconded.

I've never deliberately made a version of someone's name and I don't think anyone has made one of any of mine.
I did once accidentally give a bank toon a version of a certain realm's finest trade chat troll. It was a girl's name, but his toon was a male Tauren! That bank toon was short lived, since he ruthlessly attacked me every time I logged on. Since it was a bank toon, it wasn't a huge deal, but eventually it got annoying. I think he must have added me to his friends list or something and he would follow me around Org sometimes.

Saturo is a rather popular name. :D
Most servers it's already taken on, mostly male human Rogues... :S

It really depends. I've heard of people doing the tiny misspelling thing to give someone a bad rep after an argument or run-in (and I'd report it if that were the case) but like everyone said, sometimes you just really like a name and do an odd spelling of it to have your toon have the name you want.

I hate names with special characters though... I mean, replacing an 'o' with 'ø' or 'e' with 'è' does not read the same. But when I wanted to save Valencia for my future worgen and found it was taken, I tried out variations such as Valencya and Valenzia until I found one I liked that wasn't taken.

Of course it can also be flattery. Perhaps he saw you in Dal and loved your name/class combo... ;)

Or don't you ever think that on old or heavily populated servers, this really isn't a choice? Like Hellscream- It's populated by 12-14k alliance and 4-6k horde. Meaning alot of nice names are already taken. Alot of silly names are already taken. And alot of obscure names, are already taken. For some of us we really have no damn choice outside of using a special character to name our characters- not all of us are lucky and able to find an obscure name that's not taken, or think we've made up an obscure name but only to find out, yes lol, already taken.

Not every realm has only 2-5k players max you know.

So I'm sorry that it seems I sinned and used an alt code in a name because I wanted that specific name for that specific character. Tbh I don't see why I bothered posting when all this is coming off as is a gripe about anyone alt coding a name.

If they AREN'T out to slander you, then is it really bothering you?

I'm pretty sure he wasn't meaning you Ryai. If a server has a high-pop, of course you'll have trouble finding a good name. Take Kinetik, druid. Kinetic was taken. So I changed it a bit. The only real problem I have is with people naming their charcters Elráthélz or such.

Then again, I don't really like it when people use names such as "Asskicker" and such. I prefer RP names. Kinetik is the exception that confirms the rule. :D

It still felt like to general of an asumption :/ and besides there's always report harassment feature- if I've been able to use it to report bots, gold sellers and sexual harassers ontop of someone abusing that [name in da brackets] glitch to boot too then someone taking up your name and slandering you is reportable too.

And yeah there is a point when alt coding just goes to far. I can understand one, but when you have to alt code 2+ more letters, it wouldn't hurt to try and find another name.

I wasn't referring to anyone in particular, but given the high population server argument, are you saying that the populations are high enough that every word and name in all the languages of the world is taken and nothing else is available?

I'm a unique snowflake, to date not seen anybody with an even remotely similar name... But then I started WoW nearly 5 years ago now so that may have something to do with it, or the fact I'm wierd. Very few of my characters have others with the same name across the European servers bar what Ryai went and swiped from me (:<) or just a couple. Admittedly my Priest was originally called Deadgirl on Eonar, then I transfered to Hellscream and was forced switched to Deadgal due to it already being taken.

Mother is stranger still as she has two alts who keep getting lifts/general assistance for their unusual names (Doodess and OldBaggage).

Personally I don't particualrly care it's just when there's impersonations it starts to get irritating. Rather sadly there was a good friend of mine who died in 06 who was called Druid, I keep seeing people ripping his name with accents and it really is depressing :/

I see where you're coming from with that, but you have to ask yourself if they're really ripping his name off with accents, or simply decided they wanted to make a character named Druid and had to get creative with the alt-key... My realm is high pop, and many, many names are taken. I don't know even a small fraction of the names on the server. When I created the name holder for my worgen warlock, I realised that someone obviously must have the name Valencia, but I didn't set out to rip them off or imitate them. I simply had come up with a name I liked for that race/class combo and found a way to spell it that makes me happy with it and isn't already taken. *shrug*

You weren't using Rashika anymore. Or atleast I remember deriving Rashika from one of your deleted alts anyways.

I wasn't referring to anyone in particular, but given the high population server argument, are you saying that the populations are high enough that every word and name in all the languages of the world is taken and nothing else is available?
Lets see. Should I A: go through lists of names for a whole day to find something not taken. Then make a list of those names not taken, go through them and find one I like, possibly, even if it's not the original name I intended for the character. Upon finding out a name from the masses, I then go and make character. Only to find oops that name could A: possibly have already been taken or B: the spelling I came up with was already taken or C: that while I was spending all this time scrounging for a new name, it was taken.

If Anasai, Anasi, Anasei, Anesai, Anisai, An[anything making it sound, look or act remotely to Anasi] were all taken, and you had a choice of Alt Coding or using a name you didn't intend at all for said specific toon, what would you do.

Or hell let's take this up against people having the same name on other servers!

http://eu.wowarmory.com/search.xml?sear ... chType=all I'M NOT THE ONLY ONE I DEMAND JUSTICE.

So yeah, I'm just going to leave this topic since it just feels like you're pissed off someone wanted the same name as you and found a way around the limitations Blizzard set up. So I'm done here.

*Chuckles* The name Illidius was one of a kind when the armory first came into being. Not to long after that, there are a lot of other people with it. I have no idea if anyone has 'stolen' it on one of my realms or not yet.
