So after my post about el chupicabra, I found out Alot of you guys are into cryptozoology. So to this I submit my faveorite crypto critter.
The jersey devil
Why is he my favorite? Because he has been seen IN MASS by people. I kid you not, this isnt two people in the woods seeing bigfoot, or a fisherman seeing Loc ness. litterally different GROUPS have seen it, some have even engaged it. There was even a week where the thing was seen several times EVERY DAY! I will link the sites so you can see ALL the info but here are some of my fave sighting reports

West Collingswood, NJ-Phenom week 1909

Two men had been walking down a road when they saw what they believed at first to be an ostrich sitting on top of a friend's house. The two men called the fire department, who then shot the hose at the Jersey Devil. The water knocked it off the house at first, and it seemed as though it was fleeing, but surprisingly the creature turned and began to charge its tormentors. The crowd began throwing anything they could at it in an attempt to stop it, but nothing seemed to work - the creature barrelled headfirst towards them. Finally, before the creature made any contact with the scared onlookers, he spread his wings and soared over their heads into the dark night sky

Camden, NJ Phenom Week-1909
A woman, Mrs. Mary Sorbinski, became the first human to witness a Jersey Devil attack on another living creature. She heard a commotion in her backyard around 7pm, and upon remembering that her dog had been out there, immediately went to see the cause of the noise. She was stricken with shock and terror as she saw her dog in the "vice-like grip" of a "horrible monster!" Mrs. Sorbinski then began to smack at the creature with a broomstick, and it dropped her dog and began screaming its awful high pitched cries. The creature flew right at Mrs. Sorbinski, but at the last second changed direction and flew away. After it had gone, Mrs. Sorbinski carried her injured dog into the house to find that a chunk of its flesh had been ripped out. She became overwhelmed with fear and panic. Within an hour, the house was filled with neighbors, police officers, and others who were curious as to the night's incident. While the crowd had gathered, once more the Jersey Devil made its presence known at the Sorbinski residence by emitting its awful screeches. The police officers on scene attempted to fire at the creature, but to no avail. It eventually flew away. This entire incident caused a state-wide outbreak of panic and fear.

Haddon Heights, NJ-Phenom week-1909
A trolley passenger sighted the creature through a window at 2 am. The passengers all stared in horror as they watched the Jersey Devil flying near them. When the trolley car stopped, the creature circled above, screaming hissing noises before flying away. The conductor of the trolley, Lewis Boeger, gave this report: "In general appearance it resembled a kangaroo... It has a long neck and from what glimpse I got of its head its features are hideous. It has wings of a fairly good size and of course in the darkness looked black. Its legs are long and somewhat slender and were held in just such a position as a swan's when it is flying. We all tried to get a look at its feet to see what shape they were but the darkness was too great. It looked to be about four feet high."

Having grown up in Philly I have heard the stories since I was a baby. I've spent many a night camped in the Pine Barrens and never had the luck of seeing or hearing anything remotely supernatural there. But I will say that the Barrens is one of those places that something can exist in and never be found. Not sure how far south they begin, but I can tell you they stretch pretty much the length of Jersey and they cross Long Island. Quite sure they pretty much traverse the entire east coast and are just called different names.
And Red is correct. Literaly thousands of people have seen this creature for as long as records have been kept and before. Very reputable people too. Policemen, businessmen and even a mayor or two I believe.
The origin story I have always heard was this; A woman named Leeds was about to give birth to her thirteenth child and labor was going badly for her. In a fit of pain she screamed out for the devil to take her baby. Moments later the Jersey Devil was born to her, let out a shrill roar and flew out through the chimney. Great stuff when you're nine and at the campfire in the Barrens. Pretty sure I never slept a minute the whole trip.

Oh wow Vespias, that's awesome! I would love to go to the Pine Barrens. Was obsessed with the Jersey Devil (among all other supernatural stuff) when I was young. Well, I still do love them. :D

The Barrens can be at the foot of someone's back yard in Jersey but once you enter them you can feel millions of years slip away and you find yourself in one of the most remote places on earth. They are wild and beautiful and always changing yet staying the same. It's actually hard to describe them.

So many cryptids topics lately. I looove cryptids. I'm fascinated, but also somewhat scared of them. The only one I firmly believe in is bigfoot. With the chupacabra, there are just too many reports with the exact same descriptions for me to just blow it off. As for the Jersey Devil, there are a lot of sightings, but many of them have different descriptions, so it's kind of sketchy imo. As for Nessie, I'm certain there is some kind of undiscovered beast that lives in oceans. If it's a reptile, I'm sure it could enter fresh water as well.

But that's kind of off-topic. The Jersey Devil is one of those cryptids that just gives me the shivers. I'd hate to see that thing looking in my window at night.

Ah, this reminds me of the time 3 or 4 years ago (When I was 12-13) when I went mad about cryptids! There was a tv show based at youngsters/youth about mysterious goings, and they done an episode about Cryptids and I just found it interesting all these legends about weird beasts and animals. The Mothman was mentioned on the show but I can't remember the names of any other of the ones they spoke about.

Seeing as i'm English and live in England, I was brought up being told stories of the Loch Ness Monster (Even though it's in Scotland, it's the most popular cryptid in Great Britain!) and watching the film (Which I loved). Thank you very much for re-igniting my interests in cryptids again! But The Jersey Devil seems interesting...Seeing that out my window would be frightning!

I think the devil is freeky cause its one of those cryptids that has this ...aggresive attitude. It tries to break into houses it attacks people, its just plain nasty. Bigfoot doesnt freek me out any more then a big gorilla...that being said Im not stupid, if I saw a bigfoot I would way back the hell off. Mothman freaks me out, Chpicabra used to freek me out but I got over that

I HAVE read up on it. ALOT I have gone to the pine barrans with a group of people looking for this bastard. We all know how the story goes HOWEVER we do not believe that they are the same thing. Oh and BTW there are several stories with different versions.
There are stories that say el chupicabra is an alien, is that true? No.

Well we wont really know intill theres some cold hard proof now wont we :P I wouldnt be surprised if it was some yank army experimint gone wrong or something. As really if you think about it to have a population of animals that are that big there would need to be alot of them and stuff or they would all be inbreed and once your that hiding would not be easy as well you wouldnt work right or heck liveing infact would be hard as most inbred things have alot of things wrong with them just look at those "pure" bred dogs and all those problems they have. I mean really the big question is why have we not found a body yet? I mean i'm not saying they may not be real but youve got to think about that and more so when its a cyrpted that lives near people.
And really how do we know how far we truely are in the area of gene mixing/clone etc? really makes you think :S who says these crypteds are natural?

dispite having no proof I would say these things are natural, of course now you just have a crazy ever all belveing person here.
