i have a spider but i also have a bird of prey. I have aotona and I LOVE using her for pvp, their snatch ability comes in handy

if you are looking for trying something new, try using a bird of prey

i love using them for pvp

I actually used a wasp for a while and really liked it for PvP. The only reason I got rid of it was because I hated how its butt moved when it flew. If you're BM, silithids are pretty good. They have a similar skill to spiders, but it does a small DoT. You can also try out a ravager or a bat, they both have stuns. The ravager's stun is melee range and costs no focus, while the bat's stun has a 20-yard range but costs 80(?) focus. Then you could also try a hyena. They have a tendon rip ability that has a cooldown of 20 seconds and does damage while slowing the target. I've used them, but there are couple little graphical oddities about hyenas that I can't stand, so I ditched it.
I also see a lot of serpents (great against casters), not so many nether rays, and some core hounds here and there (BM only). I actually saw someone with a rhino in AB today, too.

Which actually wouldn't be too bad of an idea if you're running with a rogue/warrior, it would help them out a bit and the rhino is so huge it kind of takes up the screen.
Oh, and how could I forget owls* and chimaeras?! Owls have a disarm ability (fantastic against those pesky melee classes), while chimaeras have a super-fast-cooldown slow that does frost and nature damage (BM only).
There are plenty to choose from, as you can see. There is no reason you HAVE to get a crab or spider for PvP.
Good luck!
Edit: Birds of prey*, not owls.

I use a Chimaera for most of my pvp. It has a powerful snare ability with a very short cooldown (7 to 10 seconds). Even without Longevity! It's excellent for kiting melee opponents. I also use an Eagle, a bird of prey, since it is able to disarm enemies. Particularly useful against melee who get a little too close and also against other hunters, which can be life-saving as BM since SV and MM have more powerful shots. Sometimes I might also use my Cat for the ability to stealth. Stealth can be very important, especially when an enemy figures out that you're BM and knows to take out your pet; it can help to prevent them from attacking and killing your pet early in the fight. I also find the Cat to be better for cloth targets because it can sneak up on them and put out more damage than my cunning pets.

I still use my Devilsaur for the same reason I got him. Nothing says "MUHAHA" Like sending a giant red beastial-wrathed T-Rex at someone. I also like Hyenas. Slows those pesk flag gabbers down lol.

Chimera's and Silithids are still very viable PVP pets, with their slow and DoT snares.
And at lower levels before the level changes for AV [IE when you could be 60 for it], I owned Paladins, Warriors, Deathknights and Rogues 1v1 as BM, with an owl. I'd just sic'em and have him snatch and get away then kite and well I'd win.
...
I miss when you could actually 1v1 something as a BM hunter cause everyone was in the same mix of crap gear, outlands gear and crafted items as you were >_>

I don't pvp as often as I used to now... but I love my orange hyena Dalili when I do.
I have my silencing shot (as MM) for those pesky casters and a conc shot/tendon rip macro for any melee that go after me.

I agree here, MM is vastly superior. May I suggest Ravagers, Wind Serpents and Nether Rays? They look cool, and they are useful.

I love using my Ravager, hyena, Gorilla, and serpent in the BG play. Am a fan of the slow/stun capabilities.
Like the ravager the best for flag carrying bg's.

I am BM/Surb, i pretty much use bm when doing quests if i have any dailies and farming. other then that i am always in Surv. Spec i have my wolf and then i have a spider and aotona ( bird of prey) for pvp snatch is super nice, and the web spider have is nice to. Surv hunter gets, explosive shot which is nice cause it does fire dot, black arrow does damage over time and then there is wvyrn shot which puts them to sleep, when it breaks, or they wake up they get a posion dot. and then the extra damage traps and do and then traps aks =o set of lock and load alot which is nice being able to do explosive shoot 3 times in a row with no cd is super nice
But yeah for pets, i would say go out tame something and try it. who knows something that might not work for anyone else might work great for you. its all trial and error

I personally love chimeras. Slowing a target down for 5 out of every 7 secs, + concussion shot = slowed 100% of the time. Kitty druids and wolfie shaman are slowed to a walk.
The big keeper was when my hunter was 72, able to take down an 80 war who kept trying to reach me but just could not get that fare with me kitting him. He didn't think KILL THE PET noo he wanted ME. But he never got to me, got in range to charge twice, but a quick disengage fixed that. So while I kitted him, throwing traps every few steps he went down easy.
My chimera has been by my side in every battleground I've done sense then. There are MANY who think 'Kill the hunter and the pet vanishes' rather then 'kill the pet then kill the hunter' least in my battle group, so it makes taking down such a breeze when they are stuck slowly walking towards you.
....plus there -really- good at catching flag carriers XD
