The thing is, it shouldn't be level across the board! Those of us who raid or PvP for those recipes deserve them more than someone who just quests or randoms. We work for the recipes, in a setting made for challenges! Besides, all the other professions get nice recipes in raids, for whatever armor they can make, like legs. We engineers make goggles, guns, trinkets and ammo, enchants too to a lesser extent. We rarely if ever get recipes. A bit unfair, don't you think?
The problem with this is, the "raid/PvP/dungeon dropped patterns" end up becoming "required" for ANY participation, and that ends up screwing over those who don't or do very little of any of those activities.
I don't believe that "required" content (ie: patterns for functional items) should come from those sources. They should be quested at best.
raid/PvP/dungeon patterns should give gear for those who do the activity, not patterns that others who don't do the activity will pay for. ie: do a raid, get an ammo pattern, sell the ammo for huge gold because EVERYONE requires that ammo or else they can't participate fully in end-game or whatever.
This is much in the same way that people are complaining that the Blizzard store should not sell any stat-bearing items. (with which I agree)
Raid/PvP drops/rewards should be BoP and "personal use only" at worst.
A bit of palindromic wisdom:
"Step on no pets!"
Casual player.. don't raid, don't PvP. Suffer from extreme altitis
I love pets - combat or non.
