One of Those Pets You Don't Expect to Keep, But Do!

I've been looking for a wolf for raiding and such. I've been experimenting but I had a random wolf I got in Ashenvale. I happen to ride by, liked the light blue-gray coat and snagged one. The Wolf worked fine, but sadly never even got a name or much personality to me. It's strange, because almost all my other hunters have wolves and usually have a strong bond with them. With Kyloriel, this just wasn't working.
Well, a day or two ago, I was out in Zul'Drak. I noticed the Vargul Blighthounds. It was odd because I was sitting near one pathing and several times while I was sitting there (was talking guild), it walked right up, just barely out of aggro range and seemed to look at me and then turn and pad away. Well, I'm not sure why, but I felt the urge and was happy to drop my Ashenvale Wolf and tame the boy. I figured it wouldn't last long. It's never been my favorite skin to be honest.
Surprisingly though...I love this boy.

His 'weird' noises, the odd but fluid way he runs, and even his little 'puppy hops' as my guild calls them are very endearing to me. I have decided that he is a keeper.
Due to his coloring scheme, which reminds me of fire, embers, and ashes, his name is Melorn, from Felo'Melorn, which is Thalassian for "Flamestrike". I reasoned that since "Belore" means sun, "melorn" could reasonably mean fire, flame, or perhaps burning, based on the similarities.
Melorn is definitely becoming 'my boy'.
So, does anyone else have one of those pets you just grabbed and thought you would never keep, but do?

Jerkface!
Back right before pet talent trees arrived, I had been stomping around trying to figure out this whole "tenacity pet" thing. I was stoked because it meant I didn't have to have my gorilla anymore, which was great because I just have never liked gorillas, but hey, the gorilladin was the thing to have, so...
Anyway! So I was trying to figure out which pet I would nab to satisfy my needs there, and happened to be piddling around outside of Shattrath while doing such (in those days my computer could hardly take the business of shatt, so unless I had need to be in there I hung around outside the city limits) and noticed the warp stalkers ambling around.
Sure, I thought. Why not? So I landed and went to tame one, having never really interacted or thought about them. Trap, tame, good to go! ...or so I thought.
Damn thing warped away, breaking my tame.
This dance proceeded twice more before I realized hunter's mark would probably keep him from vanishing :B By the time I had actually TAMED him, I wasn't sure I actually wanted him anymore, pain in the ass that he was to get.
You can probably tell my feelings about him when I slapped him with a name and moved on. I ran around with him for a bit, certain he was going to keep annoying me and being generally worthless until I had decided on a better pet.
But he grew on me, the scaly idjit. Sure he'd caused me trouble at the start, and yeah his overall demeanor seemed to be aloof towards everything, but I'd grown attached to my giant attack lizard.
I actually started feeling bad about his name and coerced afriend of mine to make a rename scroll for him so I could give him a real name and not some insult. Before the cooldown on the rename scroll was up I was back to her asking for another one. He just wasn't himself if he wasn't Jerkface.
And now he's stuck with me for all or Wrath, tanking (or at least attempting to) whatever I put in his way. We've managed most outland dungeons and we even almost managed to bring down Onyxia together (back when she was tuned for 60s, of course)!
Long ramble short, I learned to be more careful about naming my pets, and Jerk has grown into a permanent part of my stables

You can rename them now, if you like.
I tamed a cat from Blades Edge mountains once. It was sort of a nostalgia thing, since my first pet had been a cat. Anyway, I hadn't expected to keep her, Kiera was just a filler kitty. Buuutttt I fell in love with her, and she is now part of my permanent stable.

Oh I did try, but it wasn't the same

For better or worse he is always going to be a huge jerk, but that's alright.

It has to be Scythe, the silithid ravager. Picked him up because he was about, and didn't expect to keep him. He was a rare, he was on the spot, and I don't really like bugs that much. But sitting in Dal, with him happily jumping around....He was so cute and I couldn't get rid of him. I really like him!

Naphthali - she is a red spider I grabbed from Zul'Gurub. Having a spider wasn't really something I was interested in for a long time, but I saw a critter version of the red skin in ICC, so I thought I'd try it out. Plus, I wanted to try a PvP pet (but I rarely PvP so it was more out of boredom than anything else). Initially, I was going to get Naraxis, the rare from Duskwood. But when I went to get it, it wasn't there. That's when I decied to go to ZG and get one of the broodwidows, as a temporary pet until I could get Naraxis (I love rares, can't help it). A couple days maybe went by, and I went to Duskwood to get Naraxis. It was there, so I walked in to go to tame it, but.....I just couldn't! Naphthali had grown on me a lot more than I expected she would. I love her glowing yellow eyes, and how she rubs her legs and looks around, how she sometimes perches on top of ore I'm trying to mine (as if to guard it for me). Also, taming her was a lot more difficult than I had expected (similar to silver's tame experience). I kept pulling extra adds and killed two broodwidows before finally taming Naphthali (whom I and my then-pet boar had nearly killed). I adore her now, and I may just keep her as my main pet throughout Cataclysm (well, for Survival - my King Krush is my main BM pet

).
The first time I really
looked at this spider skin, and immediately felt attracted to it:
Naphthali and I in Dalaran, in our usual spot:
Guarding the Saronite for me, like she has a habit of doing.....
(Edited several times for misspellings and to add pics)

My signature pet, Lapress. I was just heading out to fetch a yellow one, when I stumbled over her. Quick tame later and now that little red bug is with me forever. Recently retamed her as Soriid, but it's still little Lapress, even named her that. :D

For me it's my Skoll aka Rumble. I camped for him not really even liking his model. Never liked the NR worgs so I wasn't expecting me to like him.
He spawned right next to me and the tame went off without a hitch.
Recently I've honestly tried to release him but I can't and it actually made me sick at the thought of letting him go.
So he's with me forever.

Bluebolt the crab.
It was on first hunter, a gruff orc huntress. I had originally conceived of her as an old embittered veteran of all the Azerothian wars, struggling like a lot of orcs do with their culture and identity with regards to their past relationship with the Burning Legion. It was my intent to tame Ghosthowl in Mulgore, and he was really the whole reason that I made a hunter in the first place.
He wasn't tameable.
That caused a bit of crisis with the way I perceived my hunter's identity. I went everywhere. Traveled all across Azeroth, looking for the perfect pet. No rare at or below 20 was safe from me. Lions, polar bears, vultures -- you name it. Nothing really fit. I was heading to Darnassus when I tamed a blue crab on the coast. The intent was to have something that would distract the Sentinels guarding the docks and buy me just a little time. I hadn't really thought anything about crabs, they were nice enough but didn't really fit my character very well. So, I ignored them. But I soon found my new crab to be way too endearing to get rid of, even if he didn't suit my hunter very well. The clacky, scuttling walk, the beady eyes, the brilliant coloration, clicking claws, and nibbly mouth just had way too much personality.
Don't really play the hunter much any more, but Bluebolt is still with her.

Rak'Shiri
I originally planned to tame a Frostsaber Huntress, but since I was fortunate enough to come across this rare, I decided to "test drive" it and see if it'd be a good fit for Niabi.
Well, I surprised myself.
I never expected to fall in love with this jewel-colored kitty as fast as I did when I never had any previous intentions of acquiring her! I've always been drawn toward more realistic skins for pets. I was expecting it to be something temporary, at best, just to have had the experience to say at one time, I did this ... but something about that cat changed all my preconceptions.
I am happy to say now that Jadis (Rak'Shiri's new name) will be with Niabi for a long, long time!

I meant to say earlier that the wolf looks really great with you, and I really like his name too. I love when people put such thought and care into naming their pets. I see too many "imwithstupid"s running around.

ugh, i see this too. i hate it ;\
as far as pets..
Well, i actually went out and was trying out different pets (i wanted a good DPS pet)
So i went and got Roy, my raptor ;D
he's the blue/gray zul'drak raptors (color changer)
I didn't think i liked raptors much, but i really like him. though since i got my new wolf puppy, id on't get to use roy much.. hopefully when my gear is better i'll be able to have roy out more often n_n
Though i am also fond of Vertigo, my black wolf. i never had a black wolf before, but i stumbled on Snarler, and we've been close ever since ;D
So i guess i've actually gotten two pets like this haha

Oh, thank you! I thought for quite a while for his name. I really wanted something to go with his "burning" appearance and that just suit him so beautifully while being Thalassian. I guess it was fate that I find Melorn.

I'm really growing more and more fond of my boy.
And yes, I tend to dislike seeing 'silly' or 'rude' names for pets.

And boy, I have seen some bad ones...

I, uh, think this may have unintentionally happened tonight.
For the past few weeks I've made my 5th stable slot a revolving door. Just a nice temporary stall to swap out random pets I want to try on a whim. It's fun and helps quench that tame craving I sometimes get, at least until Cataclysm.
Anyways, we were doing a little guild run tonight through Loch Modan and the Wetlands. Helping Sochi tame a bear for her alt, and just hanging out in general. Just for silliness I was running around taming random beasts that were nearby. Some crocolisks, etc. When we get to the Wetlands I went after a Green Raptor just because I've never had one but always thought they were pretty looking.
I was laughing at his face because he looked so shifty and suspicious with those sneaky squinted eyes. Then a name came to me. And then....I felt that attachment start. >.> I may have another buddy to allocate to a permanent stable in Cata. x)

Even the ravasaur minipet seems to have those same sneaky, shifty eyes.

My first character was an Orc Hunter by the name of Sanochan. This little hunter has been through hell and back again. His pet of choice long ago after release?...
A crab. Named Pebble.
I didn't mean to keep him, but everyone commented on how awesome and shiny he was! They ventured to the bowels of Wiling Caverns together. To the plush courtyards of the Scarlet Monastery. Into the devilish home of the Dark Iron Dwarves. And then crossed into the Dark Portal, unknowingly of the adventures ahead.
Sadly, when the call came to sail the waters to Northrend, Pebble didn't make the trip. The ship was pushed almost on side by the cold, harsh northern waters.
Sano grieved his loss, but from this misfortune came new friends!
Four powerful Spirit Beasts, and a new aquatic friend. A green snapjaw turtle by the name of Fishbelly.
To this day, Sano will never forget Pebble, his first and only pet!
