Error When Downloading Beta

My husband has been trying to download the beta and got the following error: "Could not write storage, you may not have permission to write to the destination path. Please check if another application is running". And then it auto-closes. Anyone else had this or know what to do? We're not very computer-savvy. I'll check other forums as well, but I figure it doesn't hurt to get as much info as possible.

Thank you!

You on vista or Windows 7? Try right clicking and "Run as administrator".

We're running on Vista 64-bit. Just a couple minutes ago I found a solution that said the same thing, to run as administrator. We're going to try that first and see what happens. Also, he tried doing the download overnight so I'm wondering if the power saver had anything to do with it (I have mine off for stuff like this).

We'll see what happens, thank you!!!

I doubt the powersaver would affect it. It seems to be an issue with permissions, and I've heard that the way to do that opn recent version of Windows is Run as Administrator. Better on Linux then. I just sudo stuff. Unless I'm logged onto root itself, which happens more often than I'd like. xD

I called the hubby and he said it didn't work. However, I don't honestly trust him to do it right, so I'll try it myself when I get home.

I should ask, though, do we right click the World of Warcraft icon (the one we use to launch the current game), or should we be clicking something else? Maybe he just tried to right-click the wrong thing. Is there a folder, a special beta icon, something? I haven't had a chance to try the download yet so I'm not sure what I should be looking for.

Thanks!

The beta will act as a different game, so yes you'd be clicking on something else. When you install the Beta client you should have a new folder for it and most likely a new Desktop Icon, though you might have to go find it yourself if it didn't make a shortcut.

But did it install? I meant to right click the installer.

The initial (what I assume to be) installer that took over two hours did complete, from what I understand. It's the patch process that keeps getting stuck.

Edit: Even after trying to right-click and selecting "Run as Administrator".

Hmm... Do you use the launcher? Try starting the actual WoW exe as Administrator. They are two different processes and I have to admit I am not fully understood with Windows system for determining privileges.

Where is the WoW exe located? Sorry, I haven't had a chance to mess with this myself just yet, and this is our first attempt at doing a beta.

It's in the WoW folder, named WoW.exe. Here's the path Wine thinks it's in, should be something similar on your computer.
"C:\Program Files (x86)\World of Warcraft\WoW.exe"

Since it's beta, it might be in "World of Warcraft Cataclysm" or some folder like that.

Ok, I have an idea of where to look for it. I'll be home in a couple hours so I can shove him away and give it a try (he's getting all frustrated and difficult).

Thanks for your help!!! I hope we can get it to work.

Aww, poor hubby.

Hopefully you get it all sorted out. ^^

Still not working. :( I tried two different icons - one said Launcher and one said WoW. Launcher gave the error mentioned above. WoW seemed to work for a little while before giving me a runtime error:

Runtime Error!

Program: C:\Program Files (x86)\World of Warcraft Beta\g...

This application has requested the Runtime to terminate
it in an unusual way.
Please contact the application's support team for more information.

And when I went back in to try again, I'm getting that crappy destination path error.

Argh!

Oh no. :( Perhaps it would be best to post on the Technical Support area of the Official WoW forums?

I wonder if you may have to just delete it and re-download. Maybe something was corrupted during the download and didn't install properly.

I'm afraid I'm not much help. ><

It's okay Veph, I think this is happening to a lot of folks from the sounds of it.

I have now deleted the WTF, Cache, and Temp folders, along with any folder or file containing "wow-4.0.0.1710-4.0.0.1743", and that got rid of the error and everything, but now the launcher just won't launch. It completes loading the files, then just closes. And if I try to run it through Wow.exe again, I get yet another error that says something about the program not being compatible with Windows 64-bit. O.o

Beta...I'm sure it's fun, if you can actually get in. :(

Hopefully we get this figured out eventually. I am now starving, however, as I've been at this for over two hours.

Have you tried warlocking the computer? An imp might be useful!

Hmm... Could you just check which user "owns" the WoW folder?

A guildy told me today to give ownership of the WoW folder to "everyone". I had already deleted something important though, so I'll do that tomorrow. v.v But yeah, I gave ownership to my husband and also selected "Run as administrator" under the Compatibility options. But that was only for the launcher and wow.exe, not the whole folder.

Little by little, we're whittling this down to the solutions. Sounds like it's a combination of many things (including bypassing the launcher, etc.). Goofy beta!

Thanks to you guys for your help, you got me started on the right track. :D
