They are taking away the need for engineers to create ammo, but what types do you get. My characters use arrows. so does my 80 get the saronite arrows that an engineer made or is it something totally new. Is all arrows purchased at vendors? How does it work?

This. No more ammo whatsoever.

One thing I haven't seen any info on though - do we get anything else where the ammo slot used to be? E.g. relic/totem/libram? Or has slot 14 (as it's known internally) simply disappeared?

Technically, our ranged weapon is the relic/totem/libram slot. Ammo is an extra slot.

You make an excellent point here. Still, I wouldn't say no to a relic/totem/libram slot if it was offered... :)

yah and making the ammo bags useless. I heard a rumor they would become unique equip soul bound bags and you would be able to put anything in them. Not sure how much truth there is to that however.

We already have it, as Sarayana said. :P

What I meant, or at least intended to mean, was that I wouldn't cry if the ammo slot became a relic/totem/etc slot.
I think this is the point I should just realise I have the foot so far in I should just be quiet for a bit before I make an even bigger fool of myself!

There's already been emo about wands vs. relics/librams, since they have stats and the latter don't. (Which is why this is changing in Cata.) There's also a good amount of controversy about offhands not needing enchants and shields needing them. Let's just say that there would be a LOT of outcry if hunters got another useless slot just for stats.

I'd laugh if we did get one which was officially called "Hunter Weapon Slot", even if it only ever showed on April 1 (and you could equip absolutely anything in it, including Flintlocke's piloting pants) :D

Personally I'd like a special "ammo" alteration-type object that only hunters could use and went into the ammo slot. You equip it, and your auto shots also deal a percentage of elemental damage (15% of shot damage is also dealt as Fire, Frost, Nature, Shadow or Arcane damage), that kind of thing. It would give BM hunters a bit more oomph and elemental damage flexibility.
