Well it looks to me like your item is spawned for you, so I don't think others can ninja your item... but it'll def make for some world pvp on pvp servers.

My question for this is "Are dig sites shared between players, or are they unique to each person? IE, can some random Joe Shmoe come to your dig site, dig in the same area, and take 1/3 of your digs? Or are dig sites player specific, making the three sites yours only?"

While the digsites are shared, the artifacts aren't. Even if a digsite is completely crowded, everyone will have their own artifacts to look for - ninjaing isn't possible.

The artifact is spawned when you use your survey ability. It's spawned for you. Sure, you'll be sharing dig sites (I imagine there's ~100 on each continent/in each zone in Outland & Northrend but you only have ~4 active at a time, so you won't be sharing with the whole server all at once) but not loot.
